Hi Fabien, I am sure I do not have the grand overview like you, but I can definitly tell what i miss. I have programmed frontends for 30 years, not into systemprogramming. [Gambas-user] Documentation, 2 things
hello, #1 can someone recommend me a good documentation place, please. I am a person who needs an example, mostly. The officail documentation does not help me often, it seems to me it uses the same word for explaining itself. normaly I am not so bad in abstraction... It gets irritating when i get completly different results doing exact as in the official documentation, example translation. I can tell more, but don't want to go off topic. I am aware of that the documentation is as complex as the programming itself, have been through that many times in my job life, so you have my understanding. Thanks in advance. #2 Would it be any help if I write some small projects, with which can help newbies? (like me. I am not a newbie for real, was with gambas very early, but had brakes, due to illness). I find the small sniplets very useful, sometimes only one line gives the aha-effect. I am mostly into using mysql with direct access, not the built in objects.( oldfashioned, almost prehistoric, line by line programmer who likes the full control) . In the moment I make a project I call Sniplets: reading out the structures of a mysql (or any DB), and prepare them for easy to make formulas for the data handling on this table. If done well, a new programm is made in 0.5 secs, avoding very much boring typing. In phpmyadmin one can do it too, but this is a little more advanced. I plan one easy template and one some more complex to use in combination with Sniplets (i called). To be clearer, Sniplet is a code generator. Many have given me help, not at least Benoít, thanks to you!, whom I must have made desperate with tiny things. I want to give something back, the humble things I can, meassured against the huge project Gambas grew up to. kind regards Dag -- View this message in context: http://gambas.8142.n7.nabble.com/Documentation-2-things-tp57577.html Sent from the gambas-user mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, SlashDot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ Gambas-user mailing list Gambas-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gambas-user

Re: [Gambas-user] GB3 Custom controls
wow 2011/11/7 Benoît Minisini gam...@users.sourceforge.net Le 07/11/2011 05:29, Bruce Bruen a écrit : I thought I had figured out all the secrets, but no. This is about custom controls (hereafter CC) written in gambas. What I've found out so far 1) Declaring one of the hidden constants with the value set to the default causes problems, e.g. _IsContainer=False Mmm. What are you talking about exactly ? 2) (Related) Don't use the _DrawWith constant without care as it will crash the IDE if the form is left open. _DrawWith works only if you specify a control used by the IDE project (it must be in gb.qt4, gb.qt4.ext, gb.form or gb.form.mdi). 3) The Controls directory containing the icons now has to go under the Project directory and migrating a GB2 project doesn't move them. Indeed. 4) It would be really, really nice if IsContainer was a RO property exposed by all controls To know if a control is a container, use the IS operator: If MyControl Is Container Then ... The difference is when a control actually inherits UserControl. It is a container, but it must be used as a control. So the test you need is: If MyControl Is Container And If Not MyControl Is UserControl Then ... 5) It would be really, really, really nice if all controls had a AcceptFocus property (IDE visible) so things like Picture boxes can be skipped in custom navigation code Normally PictureBox is a read-only control, so it should not get the focus (do you use gb.qt or gb.gtk?). DrawingArea has a Focus property. I admit it may be useful to put that property in every control, but I'm not sure it is a good idea at the moment. 6) The IDE now makes testing a custom control library project really easy, except: a) it doesn't display the controls like they would appear in the finished product. It should. Please give more details. b) the gb problem of having to reload the project if a new CC class is added still seems to exist. What are you talking about exactly? Please give some details. 7) Issue # 123 GUI dependencies in library projects not exposing any gui dependency is a real pain. Yes. Not fixed at the moment... ...and about a gazillion things about the differences in behaviour between gtk and qt4 (but they are not gambas problems). Please report all of them as possible. The goal is to erase all these differences as much as possible. So I have now partially converted my first level CC library from gb2 to gb3 and its real good! But what do I do now? How do I make it useable in the IDE? (Apart from 7 above I don't consider any of these to be gambas 3 issues.) I have figured out that I can see the CC's in a form (*) in the IDE if I add the CC component to the IDE and recompile it (well actually, ran it inside itself). And they look real good and are displayed as they will in the finished product (allowing for the visual difference b/n QT4 and GTK). But the controls don't show up in the toolbox?? (*) Done by importing a GB2 project mocked up to use the GB3 CC library control names I have tried sticking the library executable and the library.component file in /usr/local/gambas3 but that achieves nothing. I have tried sticking the library executable in /usr/bin with no joy. Would some of you nice people tell me what it is that I haven't done, please. You must make a binary package of your component project. Normally this package should install the component in the same place as the other components located in the Gambas 3 source code, and should become as usable as them. Some of you may have got the information - I moved from Argentina (cabled and no problem) to Oslo, where I can't use a cable.. I really know, this is off topic, and I have a bad feeling about it, but I know you guys are so good, so I take a chance. I have Ubuntu 10.04.03.LTS, and that thing that does not work is a Netgear N300. I have read all I found about ndiswrapper, but is was not suficcient. Please do not hit me beacause of this - issue - I just want to programm again, with Gambas. Hi, I am not a Dev, jsut a user of gambas. It would make me crazy if all gets highligted all the time, just because I am hovering or rightklicking on something. Perhaps it would be better to use a Key-combination to achive your needs, I surly understand the benefits. Apropos, Benoit, What is with Ctrl-D? (Delete one line) I common, I think the IDE has achived a pretty good standard, and what is to come, well 1000 programmers have 1000 different opinions - and wishes. Do not misunderstand me - sure you are right bringing in new ideas, I think that is how Gambas has developed so fast in so a short time. Re: [Gambas-user] Issue 2 in gambas: No native gambas for Windows platforms
Hei, want to plug in on this discussion. by the way, issue is not particulary something negative, issue just means case, but I know in the IT-world it*s mostly a case of a bug or a problem. I do not want Benoit to get sleepless nights, but it would be a masterpiece to get Gambas running under Windows. Running, not developing. Still MS has a world-part of over 80%, Max I don*t know, and the last what I saw, was Linux at 5%. So there is a lot to do, I ll do my part - sough - I just do know so little. If I have luck now, I will become a certain amount monthly, so I will not have to sell any more, in this case I will use all my time beeing a Gambas expert. But - for that your skillls are asked, to help me getting on. I am still too much the VB-programmer, and what hurts is the lack of the TYPE as in an array, beyond that I am not missing much. Back to MS - it is to concider what they are doing. My pa has a W7 here, they are flipping out, and since my last programmers attempts was on a XP, and not with .NET, I just skipped it, I do not know. The central registration must be horrible, already in XP they started to save accessed fields in the registry - with the 5 last used values. C+/+ is very fast reading textfiles, but if you have to do it all the time - the machine gets slow. Ok some of my thoughts, not very pragmatic, but I think we should know what we are handling with: 80 to 5 % for example.Gambas could double that, it is the best piece of developing software near and far. I have a table in MySQL, (or later more), which I would like to put in a view. Which would be the best method to make this, and which view should be used? Thanks Benoit, I am using MySQL 5.5.16, installed with XAMPP, and PHP MyAdmin 3.4.5, which I don't like at all. I will take a look at the possibilities Gambas can give me. I must admit, using XAMPP and PHP MyAdmin or MySQL Admin is a pure habit - not good any more, because the guys have programmed up in the skies. So let me look at your solution before you start to work on something what could be avoided. By the way. most procedures are working pretty good now, so I get on with it. It seems to me, in case of Pictureboxes, all done in the IDE works fine, all virtual Controls have a problem. BTW, I have updatet the svn and compiled a new today. Re: [Gambas-user] Does really nobody have an idea?
Hi Rolf-Werner, sorry, I thought just that. I Benoit have no better solution, I could write you a little parser; takes just one second, and the form(s) is/are up to date, and you can define in a INI which events to monitor. This is a quick and dirty solution, but surely works, and you have no effort at all. Regards, Dag-Jarle 2011/9/6 Rolf-Werner Eilert eilert-sprac...@t-online.de Thanks for your idea, Dag-Jarle, but isn't this effort exactly what I would like to avoid? I guess the whole thing depends on the question of how QT or GTK handle the events of the controls within a window/application. I cannot imagine that the controls are accessed by the GUI (X) directly. That would imply an event loop for each control. Instead, I would expect one event loop for the application within which you have one event request for each window within which you have one event request for each control of that window. If there is a slot for the overall mouse activities of one window or application in QT (on the C++ side), it should be easy for Benoit to connect this to a Gambas event. If not, things are different :-) Regards Rolf Am 06.09.2011 17:04, schrieb Dag-Jarle Johansen: Something happened public sub WriteLogg() print GetMe.name (and or other options) end And the heavy stuff is here: for every Object you want to control, you will have to: private sub xxx_control_click() GetMet=xxx_control m.WriteLogg Alternate WriteLogg as function public WriteLogg(xctrl as control) print xctrl.name I am sure one of the guys here have more sophisticated solutions for you., f.eks the event-handler on every form, but I am not so good at that yet. Hi out there, I do not check this at all: Public Sub Page_First_Init() Dim hPictureBox As PictureBox Dim I As Integer For i = 0 To 9 hPictureBox = New PictureBox(Me) As PBX hPictureBox.Tag = i Next End Seems to work. But how do I call one of this bitmaps, for example make the first visible, and resize it? I have a complete crash with the FOR EACH, do not understand it at all, what to define where. I will be really grateful for some detailled help here, because it levels up the software massive, when I get this jump. I have looked a lot around, but for the point I don't understand - nothing. In this case PBX_Click() will help me nothing, because all PictureBoxes have to be invisible at start. Re: [Gambas-user] gb3 RC1: using structures to replace the loss of Mk$ functions
Kevin, I have no idea. But in lack of business and money enough to live for, I would like to help you, if I am a good enough programmer. I have NOT made programs in your kind until now; my kind of networking was just to have the right client idle or not. IF you want me to, I would like to spend some time learning more Gambas, and in particular networking. As Info - I have spent 30 years or a little more learning and understanding IT, so you do not have to deal with a newbie. On the other hand - Gambas is expanding faster than you can look - I am not able to handle all the new features in G3 yet. But, often it is a matter of thinking different - I would, if not a need of speed (realtime), use a database as MySQL to gather data. It's the fastest thing I can think about - I have not experienced a difference between an array and a Query - although the array is in Memory(in fact the query is indeed in memory). It is a question - what is server, what workstation, where do work from? In this case Kevin, please answer per personal mail. thanks Greetings, Dag-Jarle dag.jarle.johan...@gmail.com 2011/3/31 Kevin Fishburne kevinfishbu...@eightvirtues.com I'm finding that the task of replacing the Mk$ functions with structures for UDP packet client/server transactions is a massive undertaking. So far it's affecting every part of my project that constructs, parses, sends and receives data. As a consequence the network code is going from dozens of lines to hundreds, and I'm beginning to see that the actual logic of network operations will need to be changed as well. I can deal with all of that, but right now I'm just trying to make it work without the program becoming ridiculously complex and/or inefficient. I have up to 256 different transaction types shared by the client and server. Each one is represented by a different structure containing multiple datatypes. The structures range from a few bytes to many KB of data. Values are assigned to a structure when a transaction must be sent, then the structure is sent by the client or server. The recipient then parses the structure and assigns its values to different variables. Each transaction has an ID which represents the order in which it was sent and where it should be assigned in the recipient's transaction queue array. This ensures that transactions received out of order are processed in order. Both the client and the server have their own transaction queues that store the transactions they receive. The transaction IDs range from 0-255, so originally I had a transaction queue array that was something like this: Public ts[256, 3] As String ' Server transactions (256: Queue Position, 3: Status, Type, Data). Status = new or old. Each element of the transaction queue array was generic, meaning it could store any transaction type regardless of what data it contained. Now that I'm using structures, the transaction data is uniquely represented. Instead of a generic data string element that I could create/parse with MkSingle()/Single@(), I have a unique structure. How can I store a unique structure in a generic array of structures? Is this possible? Right now I'm thinking I need to have transaction queue arrays of [256,256] structures (65536 structures) to accommodate this. Not so good when any particular structure could be up to 198 KB + header. Any ideas are appreciated, as this is starting to make me postal! :) -- Kevin Fishburne Eight Virtues www: http://sales.eightvirtues.com e-mail: sa...@eightvirtues.com phone: (770) 853-6271 -- Create and publish websites with WebMatrix Use the most popular FREE web apps or write code yourself; WebMatrix provides all the features you need to develop and publish your website. http://p.sf.net/sfu/ms-webmatrix-sf ___ Gambas-user mailing list Gambas-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gambas-user -- Create and publish websites with WebMatrix Use the most popular FREE web apps or write code yourself; WebMatrix provides all the features you need to develop and publish your website. http://p.sf.net/sfu/ms-webmatrix-sf ___ Gambas-user mailing list Gambas-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gambas-user

It is a question - what is server, what workstation, where do work from? In this case Kevin, please answer per personal mail. thanks I'd like to keep it in the mailing list for now, as I feel this should be heard by everyone. I thought about using a database as a transaction and game state backend, which is what most MMOs do, but I have a particular need for brutal efficiency. I don't want to use some generic database because I can program it manually to be faster, custom-tailored to my exact needs. This game is designed to run as cheaply as possible (RAM, CPU, disk access, network, etc.), so databases are an easy/lazy fix that I am purposely avoiding. The app isn't multi-threaded so it can't be spread over a cluster or server farm on insane hardware. Sanctimonia is intended not just for my commercial benefit, but will be released open source so others may start their own games in their own game worlds. I can think differently; I do that all the time. I just am a bit apprehensive about overhauling half of my code when the end result may be less efficient and more complex. My project's already complex enough! Also there are some grave issues regarding SQL if you've been following the nerd news as I have. The server side stores everything on disk, but some things are cached to arrays while others just stay on disk. So it's a hybrid based on how large the data sets are. With Linux's normal RAM caching of disk read/writes, it's pretty damn efficient. I either need structures to be more flexible or the Mk$ functions to come back. I did some tests and you can't just have a generic structure assigned data from another structure. Not good for me. I think I'm straight up screwed, but will give it a few more days to see if I can come up with a suitable hack. -- Kevin Fishburne Eight Virtues www: http://sales.eightvirtues.com e-mail: sa...@eightvirtues.com phone: (770) 853-6271 -- Create and publish websites with WebMatrix Use the most popular FREE web apps or write code yourself; WebMatrix provides all the features you need to develop and publish your website. http://p.sf.net/sfu/ms-webmatrix-sf ___ Gambas-user mailing list Gambas-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gambas-user -- Create and publish websites with WebMatrix Use the most popular FREE web apps or write code yourself; WebMatrix provides all the features you need to develop and publish your website. http://p.sf.net/sfu/ms-webmatrix-sf ___ Gambas-user mailing list Gambas-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gambas-user

Aim is to create a Image dynamicly in runtime, each new Image in an array so it will be easy too handle. I started on this way. Private NP as new Image[] Private PicNr as integer in some sub PicNr=PicNr+1 NP= New Image[PicNr] what somehow works. But how do I refer to the new image? For me it would have been logical to use NP[PicNr] = New Image(Parent), and refer directly with a value of PicNr, but in all samples I have seen it is needed to loop through the array to find the item in question. Do anyone have a working sample for me, using dynamicly built objects? I mean that declaring a public variable with PUBLIC or with ATTRIBUTE is always declaring a public variable, with another keyword. I can only agree here - that are just words, and really, there are so many programm-languages on this world - one just has to be used to what is needed. To explode Gambas to a standard OOP-language is a little too much, at this time at least Neither, I never said that my proposed syntax should be replace the current. I don't mean that the current syntax better, The current syntax is fine, but an alternative syntax could be better for some programmers but that as I chose to implement a BASIC, I have to follow something that looks like the common usages in other languages.. That is not an impediment to an alternative syntax. In fact, Gambas have alternative syntax for many things: - Loops - String functions (VB component) The two cases are just exceptions: the first one, because of the common syntax of BASIC languages, and the second because of VB, and they are methods of a class, not keywords. Otherwise, I try to limit the number of keywords as much as possible. (2) I find your VALIDATE / UNSUCCESSFUL... useless, as you introduce a lot of syntactic sugar for something that is actually not so frequent. VALIDATE / UNSUCCESSFUL (they could be other words) allow that programmer don't have to write getters and setters or properties unnecessarily. For example, if you define un attribute as part of class interface is obvious that you want allow its value can be readed; so, why you have to write a getter? Similarly, that attribute must be set. So, why write a setter or _Write method attached to a property? Ok, you just can define it as PUBLIC and, at least in principle, the encapsulation would be assured; but, further changes could be more difficult to do: programmer should change PUBLIC by PRIVATE on this attribute, define getters and setters or (worse) a property and _READ, _WRITE methods. Instead, using INTERFACE/IMPLEMENTATION and VALIDATE only would be necessary to add a validation. It is what I meant: a special syntax to define something not so frequent. You take the case where your property is actually just a bit more than a variable. This is actually rarely the case. Reading is often just returning the contents of a variable, but writing is usually more complex. I don't know how to cover all possible cases with less keywords than the current syntax. (3) On the other hand, it might be a good idea to allow the user to separate the public and the private thing. Note that I am not agree with the common separation between interface and implementation. In the real life, they are not separated. A good interface usually leads directly to the implementation. Or the interface surface from a good implementation. :-) I don't understand you. In the real life there are many examples as one and the other: your clothing is an interface and is not part of you, but your skin is an interface too that is part of you. When I mean real life, I mean real programming life. :-) Anyway, actually in Gambas the declaration of interface and implementation are separated by PUBLIC, PRIVATE and PROPERTY keywords. Doriano's idea may be good: when PUBLIC or PRIVATE is alone on his line, everything after is declared PUBLIC (or PRIVATE) by default. That way, you can write: Oh! That is my idea and I'm going to patent it. :-P (read below of or much better) http://old.nabble.com/Ideas4Gambas-to28782834.html Sorry, I didn't know you were the father. :-) Regards, Outiting: I mean that declaring a public variable with PUBLIC or with ATTRIBUTE is always declaring a public variable, with another keyword. I can only agree here - that are just words, interpreted by the compiler, and really, there are so many program-languages on this world - one just has to be used to what is needed. To explode Gambas to a standard OOP-language is a little too much, at this time at least, in my opinion. Regards, Dag
Re: [Gambas-user] gambas 3 release or otherwise as binary package
Am Freitag, den 17.09.2010, 02:09 +0200 schrieb Benoît Minisini: Benoit, do you have a plan on when gambas 3 will be formally released? IMHO it is quite stable now. The reason I ask is Richard and I are within sight of releasing a stable version of our software, and we would like to submit it to Debian/Ubuntu/fedora etc for inclusion, but it would depend on the gambas3 runtime. If you don't plan to release in the next 6 months or so, would you have any objection to a me developing .deb's for the gambas3 runtime which would be relased at regular intervals, tracking the latest stable SVN version? Ian I want to make at least a first release candidate before the end of the year. I'm currently only fixing bug. I know that Fabien must make a usable gb.report component and Laurent has just added a few things in gb.sdl recently. Before doing the RC (2.99.1), I have to think a bit to see what must be changed in the language syntax to be sure that Gambas 3 will be stable until the next version. I have to check all components: - A component that is not maintained anymore should be removed. - A component, like gb.firebird, that do not have actually a GPL-compatible license should be removed as well. - The state of component must be up to date too (stable, not finished, beta). Just after the RC, there are a lot of things to do, besides bug fixing: - I want to have a bug tracker. I have setup the Google one, but it is not activated yet. - Everybody should try to ensure that his distribution will have correct packages of Gambas. - I'd like to have another look for the web site. - I'd like people who converted their Gambas 2 project to Gambas 3 by hand to write about their experience on a wiki page, so that I will be able to make a converter helper tool in the IDE. - I must then write better internal documentation to try to attract developers. So is the plan! It would be just great, Benoit, I have to do a lot of programming on Linux-platforms, and as I have to generate source as well as data-files, Gambas would just be perfect, much easier than using PHP. I could convince my client to use it too, not in my first project now, wich has to be completely in PHP, but later on, and I would see to, you get at last clicks for that. Not only that, even in our little network in the office, it would be much easier to use a binary than to install the SVN every time I change the source. (more or less). My software is mostly rather easy, just a picture of the current database (MySQL), Go on with it - I will be very pleased, when it is published. Dag-Jarle once again, done it now, this is just a matter of minutes, I cant sleep either, so it does not matter. I have tried it out, one theme with Ubuntu origin; selected colour comes ok. (On a Label and button). With another theme I downloaded, named ups yet I have lost it, I did it the opposite way. Anyway, NO colours at all was to seen, whether on button, either on the label - all was transparent. With an origin theme of Ubuntu everything was clearly present. But the centre of the screen was not centre - I have al little monitor, 17, and it came up pretty close to the right. I reckon, this is a Gnome-bug, not even a Ubuntu-bug - we will see what the colleges have to tell us about it. [Gambas-user] [SPAM] Re: Ambiguous expression?
Sorry this i mathe if you have been on a highschool or a college, you would know: it's easy multiplication and diviation goes for addition and subtsraction. Gambas works like this, if you are unsure, use parantesis () regards, Dag-Jarle Johansen Am Mittwoch, den 10.03.2010, 20:20 +0100 schrieb Doriano Blengino: Benoît Minisini ha scritto: Alessandro Rinaldi ha scritto: I really think yes. Standard symbol for fractions is /, why should you use \? Backslash is integer division, and should yeld an integer result. Slash is float division, and yelds a float number (this is Basic syntax; other languages use different methods). The expression 1\2*3 is not really ambiguous, it is only for Gambas (don't ask me why); it should be seen as take an integer number, integer-divide it for another integer number, and multiply the result for another integer number, giving an integer result. I noticed that operator evaluation order differ between languages, even if they agree on most parts. So I decided to raise an error when the compiler encounters different operators having the same evaluation order weight, and when I thought that the interpreter may not do what the user thinks. By compelling the user to add brackets, I make the source code less ambiguous for another reader, so this is a good thing. But the test is not perfect, and I don't remember why I do not raise the error for 1/2*3 and I raise it for 1\2*3. Maybe because that mixing * and / is usual in mathematics, but mixing an integer division with a normal multiplication not, and I wanted to force the use of brackets. Perhaps this is because C has / and *, and both have a double meaning (integer and float); pascal has two separated / and DIV, and only one *. So gambas is similar to pascal. When an operator is the same on different types (integer and floats), the compiler checks the arguments of the operator to decide whether promote one of the two (and the result). In this very case, all the arguments are integer, so all the operators are integer too, and there should be no doubt. Anyway, division and multiplication have the same precedence and (probably?) same associativity. But I agree with you: by combining precedence and associativity it is easy to make up a mess, and sometimes a solution like yours is better. The C language has something like 15 or more rules, so who remembers the exact result of *pointer-- 3+1? Morever, that error is actually just a warning. I can suppress it, and Gambas will just apply its operator evaluation order without telling anything. But I don't think I will do it! Uhm... *it is* an error if the compiler refuses to compile... it would be possible to turn it in a warning (does gambas have warnings?), if only one is very sure about promoting. But gambas uses a typing scheme different from C and pascal, and automatic type conversions, so you are probably right in keeping your way. Hi Jussi, tried it out, no change: I got some warnings at sudo make install: Compiling gb.form... warning: cannot read component list file: gb.form.list OK Installing gb.form... Compiling gb.form.dialog... OK Installing gb.form.dialog... Compiling gb.form.mdi... warning: cannot read component list file: gb.form.mdi.list OK Installing gb.form.mdi... Compiling gb.db.form... warning: cannot read component list file: gb.db.form.list OK I don't know how much this matters. The warnings were repeated while compiling the examples, don't list them here. The source looks like this: Public Function SysLog_User() As String Dim hfile As file Dim Sys_User as String Dim DateiName As String DateiName = user.home /gambasdata/user.txt Wait Shell whoami Dateiname Wait 'Shell whoami/home/dag/gambasdata/user.txt Wait hfile = Open DateiName For Read 'hfile = Open /home/dag/gambasdata/user.txt For Read Wait Line Input #hfile, Sys_User Close #hfile Return Sys_User End regards Dag Am Sonntag, den 07.02.2010, 17:08 +0200 schrieb Jussi Lahtinen: I have no problems with autocomplete either. When I write use, it will offer User, and when I continue to User. it offers me all options, included Home. Can you provide the source code? Have you tried to remove Gambas3 and install it again?
