don't install dx6 if you have dx8 on xp then it will work, dx
installs unless they are dx 3 or lower will only update those files
that are older than the current ones.

No not all DirectX versions is completely backwards compatible. For
example DirectX 9 supports DirectX 7, 8, and 9.
DirectX 8.0 supported back to DirectX 6.
As far as DirectX 10 since it is Vista only I don't imagine it will be
