Most of the synths are just place holders thus far, and while the first
version of the game may use synths they are to be replaced with human
actors.

well it would be nice to have a competition.
To often a dev stops doing a game because someone else is doing it,

Hi.

this is really to damien, but anyone else is free to chime in too.

As I've been cleaning up the database recently and removing old
entries, I've noticed that the older abandonware titles
previously hosted by x site (and presumably on Damien's todo list
for eventual reworking), are no longer available from there.

If Damien's not planning to rejigger those games, fair enough,
but if tom, damien or someone else is hosting them I'd appreciate
knowing so that I can give their pages current download links and
make them available to people.

I know some people have stuck them on dropbox, however I'm always
concerned at those sorts of options sinse it's not often clear
how long such things will be up and available and it's most
irritating to have someone say it'll be on dropbox only for the
link to go dead a couple of weeks later.

so some confirmation from Damien regarding self destruct, danger
city, last crusade and the savage gambit (I think that was all of
them), would be welcome indeed.

Actually with all the talk of boxing I wouldn't mind giving
savage gambit another go myself to have an idea what greymatters'
improvements will be like.

 I completely agree with Fred here.
  One reason I don't follow this list much is because of all the
crap messages with no real content sent to list, such as the babel

  Running a list that stays on topic and minimizes crap posts is
not an easy thing, I know that, but there really is no point at all

  Not only is conversation about who has the most posts
meaningless, but it leads to one line and even sometimes one word

Well I like some offtopics as long as it doesn't take up list traffic
totally or its complaints, flames, etc.

I got off the chat lists I was on because of this.

This may sound like a sob story but its true.
Most of the week I am by myself, with out lists like this one and a
few other things I'd be lost.

SOme general chat is fine.
Mostly I skim it as it is.
I used to reply to all messages now I just do it for those I care for.

Hi everyone,
Could I first of all please ask you all to calm down? From what I
have seen, the babble and thread reports have been coming on list
now for years and I haven't really seen anyone complain up until
this point. Though that doesn't mean to say there hasn't been any. I
will stand corrected if I am wrong.
Although I find it interesting to read through them I can see both
sides here. Although this is a games list I am sure Jim will have
okayed these emails with the list moderators and owners and said
moderators and owners will have allowed such postings for a reason.
To me, it can come across as a fun bantering contest with bragging
rights about who can post the most or least messages on list.
However, I can also see the other side in that trying to beat a
message posting score can lead to unnecessary messages such as
one-liners and days of talk about these reports coming on list.
I think I will have to review this situation with Thomas and see
where we go from here. If it is really so inconvenient then we will,
I'm sure, come to some agreement.
However, calling people childish and irresponsible isn't the way to
ask for something. Constructive criticism is one thing, flaming is
another. So can we please remember that when posting and maybe not
post immediately as soon as your anger and frustration flares up.

Thanks.

Damien Pendleton,
Co-Moderator.

 I completely agree with Fred here.
  One reason I don't follow this list much is because of all the
crap messages with no real content sent to list, such as the babel
report replies. I am only monitoring right now to check feedback
for Ryans soon to be excellent boxing game.
  We would have more developers on this list chiming in and
helping with constructive ideas if there wasn't so much
meaningless fluff in my opinion.
  Running a list that stays on topic and minimizes crap posts is
not an easy thing, I know that, but there really is no point at
all in the babel urination contest.
  Not only is conversation about who has the most posts
meaningless, but it leads to one line and even sometimes one word
emails to list.
  I don't mean to sound like a cranky old man here, but I hate to
see a resource like the gamers list not reach its full potential
when we have so few outlets for discussing our shared interest.

I got things working fine. yes the loading did take a while, but
game eventually loaded and this cutscene loaded. btw I hate the fact
that this game uses a synth and this will probably stop me from
buying it. anyhow, I got past the intro scene, then game told me to
press shift with the arrows to look around. I did that and nothing
happened. I tried walking, and nothing happened. so what am I doing
wrong? I tried putting my screen reader to sleep, and shutting it off. nothing.

Re: [Audyssey] Could someone send me latest version of Savage Gambitgames and trainer off list?

2011-06-02 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hey folks,
Due to popular demand I have decided to take back my statement about
redistributing the old titles.
I have spent most of yesterday modifying the games in order to state that
the games are abandonware.

I have put them all on Dropbox for the taking.
I'm sorry if my request seemed unreasonable before.
As long as it is made clear that in no way are these games being maintained
or supported, I don't mind what you do with them now. I just have one
request in that you download and distribute the latest installers rather
than the earlier ones.
Once I can find out why my Dropbox is preventing me from retrieving the
links to the files, I will email through with the links.

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] inform 7 help

2011-06-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,

Once you compile the Inform source code into a *.z data file it
doesn't mater what platform or zcode interpreter you use.

For example, I'm currently working on a sci-fi if game in Inform 7
using the Inform 7 tools for Gnome. If I compile the source code it
doesn't matter if I run it using Frotz for Linux or load it in
Winfrotz because the Inform *.z files are totally cross-platform
independant. Only the interpreters themselves are platform specific.

Hi Michael,

If you are asking if you can make a stand alone application using
Inform the answer is no. Inform is strictly an interpreted language.
That means it needs an interpreter like Frotz or Winfrotz to run. You
can't make a stand alone Windows exe file.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] inform 7 help

2011-06-02 Thread dark

Hi Sean.

the z machine was virtual, but as I understand it, infocom themselves
obviously had to create platform specific version to run the z machine on
each format.

This however simply involved running the z machine which then ran the full
if game, rather than actually rewriting the entire if game with all
commands.

That's why if you ever come across a dos c64 or other old copy of an infocom
game you'll notice there are more files than just the infocom game files.

However, obviously when infocom went bust and inform because a free language
people developed interpreters for different platforms to run the z machine
files, instead of having to run each file specially on each platform.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] The First Trailer

2011-06-02 Thread Willem

Hi ryan.
I see what you mean. Having more combos would decrease the probability of
all actions, and not only the one that is supposed to be rare, so then all
actions will be rare, which is a complete different effect from the one
intended though.

how about doing it in the following way:
in a list of intended actions have an attribute called odds or probability,
which is initially chosen as an int in the range of len(combos)
If some action like a punch is 10 times more likely to occur than a risky
combo, add 10 more numbers that will result in the punch being chosen.
e.g choose a number from 0 and 10. if it is 0, do the riskey combo, else
punch.

Hi Willem,
Thanks for saying so.
As for probability factor, I'll have to give that one some thought with
regard to building it in. The way the system is designed to work right
now,

you could likely achieve the same result if you created a rare punch on a
switch with other, less involved combos. When I get into the meat of
switches, I'll take a look, though.

probability of that event occuring (for example a high stakes punch with
high risk and high reward should not have the same probability as a normal
punch), so the surprise element is not lost.

Hi everyone,
I checked the archives last night, and it appears this message didn't
post.
Sorry if you get this twice.

Hey Dark and Tom,
I'm glad you guys liked the demo. Thanks for the kind words.
The mechanics of the editor, while fleshed out in my mind, are certainly
not
all in place at this point. As I mentioned in the demo, I need to add
opponent speech at the very least.
As for your question, Dark, about what happens in a timeline, there are
two
things that will be built into the final product. First, each round will
have its own timeline, so you can design opponent behaviors according to
which round they're in. Second, the timeline will contain the ability to
program in custom combos and set them up on a switch. If you want the
opponent to randomly choose between two sets of punch flurries, or if you
want him to adopt a certain behavior depending on his health, that will
be

completely doable.
It will be possible to hit an opponent while they're speaking. Just
program
an unblock at the same time as you program opponent speech.
I haven't quite figured out how I want custom opponents to fit into the
main
game. The goal is to have a set list of opponents that I design, complete
with some crazy behaviors. Defeating all these opponents in sequence
earns

you the title belt. After winning the belt, the player can play back
through
the same list of opponents, but they'll be much harder to beat. I figure
the
custom opponents can be challenged individually, and I could even see a
precedent for setting up a tournament of custom opponents, but I'm not
sure
how I feel at this point about players setting up secondary story lines.
I

worry that may detract from the main thrust of the game. Still, I won't
rule
it out completely. After all, the credit for combos and random switches
is

all Che Martin's, and I'm happy to implement it.
Tom mentioned having custom sounds for the various opponents, and that's
something I fully intend to implement. As you noticed during the demo,
the

clown taunted the player between the first and second rounds. I want to
add
all sorts of things like that: impact sounds, taunts between rounds,
intro
speech, in-round taunts, body falls, etc. As for music, I haven't given
it

much thought, though I suppose you could just drop in a piece of music at
the beginning of each round timeline if you really wanted.
Thanks for all the feedback, and thanks for the interest. Feel free to
let

me know if you have more questions.
Best,
Ryan

Shaun,

In answer to your question the Dos text adventures you are talking
about were not written in Inform. They were most likely written in C
or C++. As I said Inform can not be compiled into an executable file
and never did have that ability.

Although, Inform is considered a programming language its not really a
programming language in the normal sense of the term. Instead Inform
uses reserved words that identify what things are, and it is written
in plane English. For example, let me write a few lines of code in
Inform then show you something identical in C++.

The living room is a room.
Shaun is a man.
the computer is a thing.
Shaun is located in the living room.
The computer is located in the living room.

Now, obviously what I wrote is very simplistic and is written in plane
ordinary English, or so it looks. Actually, what the code does is
declare some game objects using the room, man, and thing kinds, and
then places them in the living room object. It is very easy to learn
and use because the interpreter translates all that into actual
machine code at runtime. However, you can't take that code and compile
it into an executable, because the Inform language lacks the
functionality to acquire low-level access to the console. To do that
you need a native programming language like C++ which you will see is
much much more complex.

#define LIVING_ROOM 1

Man shaun;
Thing computer;

class Man
{

public:
int room;
};

class Thing
{

public:
int room;
};

int main ()
{
computer.room = LIVING_ROOM;
shaun.room = LIVING_ROOM;
return 0;
}

Obviously the C++ source code is more complex. That's because I had to
basically write the underlying classes or kinds before even
initializing them. However, where the two languages really differ, and
my point, here is handling basic input/output.

Inform or rather the Inform interpreter has in a built in list of
input commands such as get, take, put, remove, north, south, east,
west, etc. So the language itself doesn't need to handle input on its
own. The interpreter will take care of that. Diddo for printing text.

With C++ to handle input and output simply include the iostream header
in your project and you can use cin to get input and cout to print
stuff to the console. You can't get that kind of low-level accesss to
the console using Inform.

 I remember exe files being made so its possible I suspect at least
 with the old z3 6 and 8 I am not sure about glulx or anything else.
 I know tads you can at least tads 1 and maybe 2 not sure about html
 or 3 but definately I saw that in dos.
