Re: [Audyssey] game speech

2012-01-27 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Dark,

One day I was putting in numbers for where to start the playing of and for how
long to play and the frequency to play the wave file and the sound that came
out sounded cool, and I was like, wow, I could use that for a pong ball sound.
I actually had wanted to make a game of pong, but just never had found a sound
that wouldn't get annoying being played continuously like you need for the pong
ball. So of course with the sound, I was now inspired to write the pong game.
And since so many people had been asking for games with human speech, Marcie
said yes when I asked her if she would do the speech for it. I now have a
better set of microphones, but still...

Hi Johnny,

I love going to the local medieval faire because they let me pick up and look
at all of the medieval weapons. You know all of the swords, battle axes,
flails, maces etc. I even bought a flail this summer. The wooden handle is
about a foot and a half long and on one end are two chains about a foot and a
half long with two heavy spiked balls on the end of the chains. The handle has
a leather grip and a chain wrist strap loop. But man some of those swords and
other weapons sure are heavy.

I didn't look at the subject line, so to make it work,

Stacks of junk mail.

Stacks of old cassettes.
And for the sound of flail hitting armor,
hitting an empty tin coffee can.

Re: [Audyssey] howlers

2012-01-27 Thread Milos Przic

Hey all!
Yes. We here in Serbia, and several other european countries, have the sport
that is in fact training in traditional fighting and battling techniques of
the corresponding nation. Here at my city they organize a joust in serbian
fighting once a year, and sometimes the knights come from Italy, Hungary,
Russia and Poland. I like to go to watch the joust, and I met the leader and
the trainer of the knights and talked to him about the weapons and the
disciplines of the joust. He showed me a few kinds of swords, something like
a bastard sword, and a serbian broad sword which is very heavy, about 20 kg,
a few wooden shields and a battleaxe with two broad heads, used for crushing
not only armor and sculls, but a gates of a castle or a city. There is also
a mace with six spikes, each is some 10 centimeters in length, and a flail
with a long shaft and a short chain, a standard bow and a crossbow.
The joust consists of group battle, that is, attack on a castle, where one
group attacks and the other defends the fortress or castle, depending where
the joust is held. Then, the duels that consist in a one handed weapon
fighting with a help of a shield in the other. There is sword fighting,
flail fighting and whip fighting, and two-handed weapons fights like battle
axes, serbian swords, or quarterstaves. The extremely strong of them fight
with the serbian sword in one hand and a shield or a mace in the other.
Finally, there is the serbian wrestling. If I try to translate it in
english, I would call it the belt wrestling, because the oponents take each
other's belt and try to throw him off-balance. There is also a russian
technique of the belt wrestling, where one takes the oponents belt with his
hands crossed.
Am I off-topic? No. Because a joust of a kind could be a good idea for an
online game. I know there is a flash joust game, but it is not quite rich
with the choice of weapons and such, thus it doesn't have a big replay
value. If noone does it before I learn the bgt or something similar, I will
do it. And yes, feel free to remind me of that. :)

Best!

Re: [Audyssey] flail was howlers

2012-01-27 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Phil,

You know I now use my Book Sense XT machine with a pair of stereo microphones
to record sounds for games etc. You know like the naked dice and many of the
projectiles in Awesome Homer level 3. And the flail is a real weapon. If you
were to swing it with any force and hit a person without armor it would kill
them. Even with armor it might. But so, I am not swinging that flail anywhere
near my Book Sense XT machine, or anything else that I might not want to
totally destroy. As a matter of fact, if you have ever played with numb chucks
or a bullwhip, you know that you very easily can hit yourself. The same with a
flail. If you swing it and do not connect correctly, the thing is going to
come back around and hit you. And with heavy metal spiked balls coming at you
with force... Not something that I really want to do.

I can't believe that they actually do mock fights at the medieval faires, but
they do.

[Audyssey] Some online MK matches for you guys.

2012-01-27 Thread Yohandy
These are between my sighted friend Nathaniel and myself. He uses a ton of
different characters, However I usually like to stick with a few when it
comes to online. Scorpion, Liu Kang, and Sheeva are the ones I used for
these matches. you can probably guess who my main is hahaha. Anyway we
played for like an hour and a half, and these are the 10 best highlights
IMHO. full of action and violence, and most of them really close calls, just
how I like them. nothing like both characters being close to death to get
the blood pumping... ok ok, enough rambling. here are the 10 matches in a
zip file on Dropbox. let me know which ones you guys enjoy the most! I'll do
this again if you guys like it

I enjoyed listening to the fight and my favorite is match 6, liu kang vs
kitana especially round 2. I like to hear people using liu kang. When i
listen to the recording, i was supporting your friend instead of you. haha!
For some reasons, i don't quite like scorpion and i can't use him that well.
I haven't played for quite a long time and think i forgot most of my combos.
need to revise them again. after listening to your recording, i got the urge
to dig it out and get my friends over here to fight. btw, mine is an older
version, MK Armageddon and i am playing on wii. Is like a shrinked down
version. Biggest disadvantage is mono and can't play online.

Hi Charles,

I have to agree with that. Tom is definitely one of my favorite SAPI
voices. Its just too bad Nuance decided to get all proprietary with
their license and won't sell a SAPI version without charging an arm or
a leg for it. To make it worse attempting to install the SAPI version
that came with Jaws 9 on a new PC will fail.

Re: [Audyssey] game speech

2012-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

While I take your point I think the problem here is as much a lack of
information as it is money. For example, you mentioned why not look
around on songplanet.com. Until you mentioned it I had never heard of
it. I hadn't heard of voices.com until Philip Bennefall brought them
to my attention either. Unless a developer knows about such places, it
is brought to their attention, or find it by a Google search that lack
of information can and will effect the kinds of content available to
them.

I know just typing in a search string like royalty free music or
royalty free sounds will generate a lot of hits. Usually, one of the
big name resellers like Sounddogs.com will be one of the top results.
It can be rather daunting going through all the possible hits to find
something within a developers price range, that is of decent quality,
etc.

As far as the 10 to 20 dramatic voice clips for the wrestling game
goes that makes sense from a financial point of view, but also feels
like an incomplete product to me. To me it is more jarring to go from
a human to a SAPI voice. I'd prefer either all human voice overs or
all SAPI but not half and half.

Sarah is a case in point. While I do enjoy the game I feel certain
aspects feel cheaply done. I can't help feel a bit jarred when I try
to examine one thing and you have Sarah describe it in a human voice,
examine something else, and have ATT Crystal describe it instead. It
feels, well, weird.

Then, you have the Caretaker, who is a human actor, but the ghosts,
suits of armor, etc all use SAPI voices. While I realize Phil was only
using what he had available to him I think it would have sounded much
better if the SAPI voices were completely swapped out for human ones
because as it stands right now its sort of half and half. When you
compare the human acting, which is decent, to the SAPI voices the
contrast is quite apparent and feels like a low budget film where the
actors were replaced by robots or something.

Cheers!
