You don't have to be a developer to contribute files - you just have to be
willing to spend some time, potentially help out with a bit of research, and
send in whatever installers you've got that we don't. Even if you don't have
any installers, another person whose willing to help out would be great -
more hands makes work go faster, and more opinions makes everything more
fun.

Subject: [Audyssey] game archive project?

Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen where
somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or game y is
gone, does anybody have a copy.

As a result, I'm wondering how the community would feel about a game
archive project. Basically, my idea is that those of us who have large
collections of games would work to create a central repository, and then
send out installers on request.

My current vision for this project is something like the following:

*The archive will keep a copy of any and all games that can be found, as
well as versions of the same game that offer a noticeable difference in
gameplay, sounds, storyline, etc. Example: swamp version 3.6 would be kept,
3.5 would not, 1.1 would (because it has a single player mission different
gameplay and different sounds).

*Only legal games will be distributed. Example: the setup for bsc games, but
not the key generator. Requesting an illegal product could result in a
blacklist of the person (or email if name cannot be determined).

*Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis; I'm considering either
using dropbox file requests or just plane old email. The reason for this is
mostly related to web site management - I could probably build a page for
each author, but keeping it updated would be a pain, and it'd require huge
amounts of storage space (my personal archive of installers is 8gb, and its
really not that comprehensive).

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games. A lot
of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if you do
enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still hosted,
which makes finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location where
we can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions of
games that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

How do you all feel about this (developers, I'd love to hear from you
especially), and if I were to try to make this a reality, who'd be willing
to dedicate some time to help me put together the archive?

Hello John,

Yes, I am actively supporting Final Conflict. There is even a new
version in development although like all the USA Games titles
development has been slowed due to events going on in my personal

I'll also add I am pretty sure Draconis Entertainment is still

Dynaman, etc. I'm not sure to what level of support they have for
those games, but I don't think they are abandoned by any stretch of
the imagination.

Cheers!

Hi Damien,

I see where you are going with this, but unfortunately the terms of
the license agreement really prohibits free redistribution of the key
generator for the BSC titles. While I'd like to agree with you on a
personal level as a gamer, but as a list administrator I can't legally
allow people to redistribute that key generator given its legal
status. So My suggestion is to simply ignore all of the paid BSC
titles given their legally in limbo.

There are however some BSC titles I think can be freely redistributed
like the original Deekout and Bobby's Revenge since they were free to
begin with.

Cheers!

One thing I would say though, is that since the BSC software is abandoned,

alongside the other stuff? I say we either give full availability to the
product where such availability has been granted, or don't host any kind

paid material at all if it can no longer be purchased. I say this because
 I

Re: [Audyssey] support status of some games

2015-08-12 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi John,

For my part, I'm around in the sense that I read the list from time to
time but I am not actively developing games. I will certainly do the
occasional sideline project, but that's about it given my current workload.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

There is even a new
version in development although like all the USA Games titles
development has been slowed due to events going on in my personal
life.

I'll also add I am pretty sure Draconis Entertainment is still
supporting their older games such as Alien Outback, Pinball Classic,
Dynaman, etc.

There are however some BSC titles I think can be freely redistributed
like the original Deekout and Bobby's Revenge since they were free to
begin with.

Cheers!

 Hi John,
I would certainly like to see something like that, and I would certainly be

One thing I would say though, is that since the BSC software is abandoned,
and the key generator was once sold, couldn't we get access to that
alongside the other stuff? I say we either give full availability to the
product where such availability has been granted, or don't host any kind of

paid material at all if it can no longer be purchased. I say this because I

know how I would feel, both emotionally as a potential customer and
conscientiously as a developer, having a game which I know has more
functionality than the demo allows and not being able to play it. I can
understand it from both points of view.

While I also intend to mirror his site and games I would like to

the method he uses is functional it doesn't really cut it for today's
computing environment now that 64 bit Windows uses the Program Files

confuses people to no end. So a new installer that would pick the
correct one would be an improvement, and I would like to repackage the
games to have a more updated installer. So perhaps we can work on
something like that besides just mirroring them as is.

Also I heard you live three hours away from Chardon, and if you can it
would be nice to have another VB 6 dev take control of his source.
While I could probably do it I am pretty busy and have a lot on my

Plus while I know VB 6 it has never been my forte anyway.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,

You are comparing apples to oranges here. The Vocalizer Add-on and
Leasey are completely two different types of programs, are supported
differently by NVDA, thus is a poor comparison. Let me explain.

With Leasey it is written to be a screen reader add-on. It directly
interfaces with the screen reader, and is written in the screen
reader's own scripting language. Thus it is subject to the same type
of license of the screen reader it is written for. In the case of NVDA
that would be the GPL which means it couldn't be closed source.

The Vocalizer voices are not a part of NVDA. They are a completely
separate entity legally and technically so of course can be closed
source. The only connection they have to NVDA is the Vocalizer
drivers, which by the way are open source, and are in keeping with the
NVDA license agreement.

So you see if the add-on is a module for NVDA it has to be open
source. If it is a separate program that works independent of NVDA it
can be closed source.

Re: [Audyssey] game archive project?

well I have legal access to the generator justin d sort of abandoned the
community anyway and while I won't send his generator round much as I
would like to I really have no issue if someone requests a key to give it.
Sadly the same goes with q9 I only have 1 key sadly, however the same
applies.
There will have to be some rules in the archive, no comercial games that
are under development or still copywrited or sold!.
Ofcause if they are not sold anymore or will not be sold anymore then
thats up for descussion.
I do think to be honest that for something like this we should make it
that if the developer can be contacted and is relyable to a point or is
active or is not dead etc that that licence still applies.
Ofcause if someone challenges us on something thats fine but I don't see
it fair if I lets say am a dev that decides to close up shop or I don't
respond to mail or I simply am not active at all and or die or something
but my games are copywrited to me or a non me and then someone can't use em.
If I ever make something I think my licences and all registrations will
work till I die, after that I can't really complain if someone cracks it
so whats the point.

My concern with providing official access to the keygen is that I don't know

I suppose from a technical standpoint its only piracy if you actually use
the generator - but I'm not sure that's a line I particularly want to walk,
especially if I'm trying to make this archive something the whole community
knows about. It'd be different if I was considering offering it to a single
person, but if I'm going to say email me and I'll send you whatever you
want then I want to be a lot more careful.
I want the archive to be a place people can go to get games - but I also
don't want to get sued.
My stance on this is a bit more paranoid than some - I've seen a number of
different links for bsc floating around - but especially if I'm acting in an
official capacity as archive manager as opposed to myself I'd rather be
caucious.

Hi John,
I would certainly like to see something like that, and I would certainly be
willing to contribute what I have.
Cheers.

A lot

Ok, what exactly do you want, I have a lot of games, some of them are

There are others, sadly I think us guys at realitysoftware have

not the really old stuff.
I have quite a few old z codes, and a lot of agt and tads games and
their compilers, if you are on the dosbox list you probably saw me
upload that entire archive and its been up here a few times.
How would the request system work, I can't store every game, so we would
need some sort of server or servers.

who would fund the prroject or would people contribute to it.
I could probably give about 2-10 bucks every so often but with sertain
family funding going away later this year I can't just chuck cash at the
project.
I have seen other projects on bt syncs, dropboxes, and ftp sites
publicly accessable get full of viruses, worms and trogens to deleted
files and the like to people hacking computers with stuff inside files
though.
I guess I'd be happy to submit to it but I don't have much of a net
connection data wize the 30gb cap is often overloaded with online
streams and I don't want to overload it myself with extranious data.

That's why I attempted to open a dialogue somewhere a little less
fraught.

In my mind, for a community as small as this one, games being tied to
specific screen readers is a terrible idea, which makes games being
tied to a paid product which is in turn tied to a paid screen reader a
*truly* terrible idea! Tbh, I'd question who Leasy's users even are,
given that funding for JAWS licenses isn't dished out willy-nilly
anymore. I mean, do you know many people with enough spare change to
invest in a JAWS license which costs more than an entry level
computer, then splash a bit more cash to change the user interface of
that expensive product they've just bought? I don't! Perhaps Bryan is
shooting for exclusive content such as Q9 making his platform more
appealing, but I would've thought it would've been clear from a bit of
research that a large - if not majority - portion of the younger
generation in this community (his potential long-term customers) are
going to turn their nose up at anyone who's willingly hopped into bed
with Freedom Scientific.

Of course, this is all just one chap's opinion. The decision was
Philip's to make, and he made it. I guess at this point I'm mostly
sounding off because if Leasy have any sort of buying power, this
might not be the only game to be acquired rather than developed
specifically for a platform which frankly, I would hope is short
lived. That's a strong statement, but it carries no animosity on a
personal level to anyone involved. I'm saying that it's the business
model that sucks for end users, not necessarily the people behind it.

Lastly, for anyone who made it this far and has me pegged as another
holier than thou armchair critic, I should probably point out that
I've been instrumental in finding funding for a couple of
accessibility products, so I feel pretty confident in stating that
Leasy's model isn't the only way. Funding is still out there for good
ideas. That funding can greatly reduce the cost for end users, and if
Leasy were screen reader agnostic, it could've been a product that
attracted more young, hungry gamers. But nope.

Anyway, just a splurge of my initial thoughts on the subject. Maybe
they'll reach a future developer who gets approached and give him or
her something to chew on...

If you can give me a snippet of what you're thinking for an organizational

to be going into ftp.ifarchive.org and copying everything down for sorting,
which is an absolutely tremendously huge project.

The problem with organizing games based on the file name is that said name
is almost always cryptic. If I'm going to try to organize the games in a
 way
that makes sense, I'm going to have to rename pretty much every single one
 of them.
Honestly, making a proper archive of IF titles is probably going to be
incredibly difficult, and the more I think about it the more I start to
wonder if its beyond the scope of what I'm trying to do.

2015-08-12 Thread Brandon Keith Biggs

Hello,
I think this would be a great idea!
Has anyone checked out
https://archive.org/
to see if they could help?

Otherwise we could ask Aprone if he would be willing to host them, we
could setup an amazon s3 bucket that is $1 a month every 100 gig, or we
could see if we can use github and have a branch for each game and have
a release on each branch.
It is also possible to use amazon s3 as a git repository, so we could
create a way for people to submit a game and an html page with each game.
But I think this is a problem for current developers. I think it may be
worth creating a little repository for current developers to host their
games as well as hosting games from older developers who aren't hosting
anymore.

I think I would be interested in setting something like this up.
thanks,

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games. A lot of
people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if you do enough
digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still hosted, which makes
finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location where we
can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions of games
that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

How do you all feel about this (developers, I'd love to hear from you
especially), and if I were to try to make this a reality, who'd be willing to
dedicate some time to help me put together the archive?

Hello,
Those who read the group often will know that I uploaded a new version
of the Virtual BNS emulator, which uses a library taht can communicate
with screen readers and SAPI. Well, now this version, and the eSpeak
one, are released on github. I'll keep these there, and maybe I'll
upload them to the ftp. By the way, is the ftp still maintained?
Okay, so here you've got the links.
eSpeak version: https://github.com/sukiletxe/vbns-espeak/releases
Accessible_output2 version (compatible with JAWS, NVDA, Window Eyes,
Supernova...): https://github.com/sukiletxe/vbns-ao2/releases

If you want to contribute to these, feel free to open pull requests.
Suggestions are also welcome.
Regards,
Sukil
