Hi Dark!

Sorry for the delay. It's been a busy week. :)

Thomas has pretty much covered everything. Thank you Thomas!

I'll just add that Sebby, one of the original devs of Audio Quake who is
also a part of the AGRIP project is here on this list so perhaps he will
chime in.

Matthew, Sebby and others (myself included) are currently working on Audio
quake for multiple platforms (Mac included) in a number of ways so this
project is still in active development.

As for Jedi Quake, though I've personally not been developing it for a while
now, I believe someone else has done at least a little bit more with it
since I last worked with it. I unfortunately have no actual info on that
though. So at this point it's basically rumor. :) Thomas has shared the link
to the latest original version created by me. So there you go. :)

There will definitely be more info on AQ and JQ when more info is available.
So please stay tuned!

Thanks so much for your interest in keeping the word on Audio Quake and Jedi
Quake out there so people still know they exist! It means a lot! :)

Have a great weekend!!!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Hi.

I apologize for sending this via the list but I unfortunately don't have
Cara's E-mail address to ask her privately.

I am updating the audiogames.net db and I came to the entries for both
audioquake and agrip (both of which were written a long time ago before I
took over maintaining the db).

My first question is, is Agrip totally invalidated by Audio quake? the audio
quake entry said as much. If Agrip is now contained within audio quake I
will remove it's entry from the db, sinse while (as I said to Ishen), I
don't want to remove past entries there is no point keeping entries for past
versions of the same game, which is why I deleted the Gma solitare
entry and replaced it with one for Gma cards.

The second question is what are the homepage and download links for audio
quake, and indeed for your Jediquake mod if that is still available. I am
well aware these are probably not being maintained anymore and won't work on
versions of windows past xp, (I can put as much in the platform
information), but if the game is still available obviously it's better
people know even if they need to run with a virtual machine or whatever.

If the game is now completely removed from the net I will simply list both
pages license types as unknown as I have for things like the Bsc titles, but
obviously that would be a less good option.

Hope this makes sense.

All the best,

Dark.

Hi Dark,

That's a good question, and I'm not sure I'm the right person to ask.
I rarely use Jaws any more myself. That said, I do know in the versions of
Jaws I've used I can't just flick speech on and off the way I can with NVDA
or the way you can with Supernova. At least, that has been my experience.
there may be a way to do what you want to do, but I'm just not familiar with
any current Jaws releases to give you an answer without downloading the Jaws
demo, installing it, and playing around with it to find out if what you are
asking is possible or not. In NVDA one can press insert+s until it disables
speech or enables speech which is quick and easy.

Cheers!

Hi david.

I know reports haven't been good thus far, though I've not tried the game
myself so I can't confirm or deny. However whether games get entries on the
db isn't dictated by how good they are or whether people like them. The db
is supposed to be a general overview and ideally shoulod have everything in
it (though with the amount of games that are constantly being brought out
this is unlikely ever to be finished).

As long as the game is accessible via audio ie, playable by a blind person
with as much or as little effort as a sighted person, and as long as the
game is a full version and not a practice game, it will eventually get a
page, though when this is might be another matter.

All the best,

Dark.

Hi.

This is to anyone who hasn't seen this one over at audiogames.net It's an
action game where you play a warrior who has become blind and is seaking a
warlock to help him get his site back. You have a sword and shield, but the
game is very much anime enspired with armies of attacking warriors, dagger
wielding psychotic women, and archers who's arrows you can cut out of the
air (yes it's that awsome).

The music, sounds and story are great, however what really impresses me
about this one is the gameplay. it is extremely simple, move left and right,
up arrow to attack, down arrow to parry, and should by rights be just
another sterrio target boppit affair. I am however extremely impressed by
the way the game works mechanically. You can't just automaticaly block every
attack and then respond with a hit, there are opponents you need to attack
first, some others you need to attack slightly before they do etc. Actually
the mechanics are far closer o those of a beatemup in terms of timing and
response even though the enemies only have one attack each and you have only
one block and one attack to play with.

I'd definitely advise developers interested in creating more subtle
audiogames to have a look at this one, sinse it takes that very simple idea
we've all seen time after time, but manages to make it mechanically much
more interesting and adds just those elements of judgement which I've been
wittering on about, indeed I am quite surprised it was possible in such a
basically simple game.

The story and sounds are also great too (the enemies are just so evil).
Either way I'll stop wittering and say where to get it.

The game was originally designed to run on a game play website in flash, but
getting that one to work was a bit of a pest so the author has provided a
direct download:
http://www.evildogserver.com/theblindswordsman/theblindswordsmanPC.zip

I'll be adding this one to the database when the developer sends me more
information.

Beware the grue!

Hi Nicol.

Well I still occasionally play packman with my limited vision, although it's
not the easiest game to play with low visual field.

the first answer is yes, Phil included the ghosts in packman talks precisely
because they're in mainstream packman. The second answer is a little harder
because packman being a very old game never had particularly specific
ghraphics that give a clear sense of things, so the ghosts in mainstream
packman were just sort of undistinguished shapes in redd, green or blue with
eyes and a mouth, just the same way packman himself is basically just like a
circle with a bit cutout (imagine a pizza with a slice missing).

This lack of detail in older graphics is a little hard to explain if you've
not had sight, and even to me, who has limited vision and needs to pretty
much guess at what things are it is a somewhat difficult concept but I will
try to explain.

In Sansens carnival of the animals he makes the sound of a lion raw by
playing a long chromatic run up and down several octives of the piano. Well,
that as compared to the real sound of a lion raw is rather like the old
atari style graphics compared to real objects. It's a sort of vague outline.

if you weren't told that the ghosts were ghosts you probably wouldn't know
what they were.

Hope that sort of makes sense.

All the best,

Dark.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] BSC games with new computer

Hi,

Actually, it wouldn't take building an accessible console. We just
need to find an economical way to make selling game's on disc
profitable for commercial game developers. The main reason companies
such as Draconis no longer ship their game's on CD is because it costs
a lot of money to do, and there is not enough interest in buying
game's on CD or DVD to make it economical for VI game developers to do
it instead of downloads.

The main reason ESP, Adora, now Draconis could do that say 10 to 15
years ago is that most people were on dial-up internet and it was
worth the customers time to just order a copy on disc since a large
game or several games took too much time to download. Now with the
rise of high-speed internet via cable and dish there is less desire or
a need to wait days for a copy of said game to come in the mail when
they can download it, order it, and have their key in a matter of a
few minutes. Thus selling games on physical media such as ours is
commercial suicide because there is not enough interest or desire to
pay more for games on CD when they want it via a quick and easy
download.

Cheers!

Then maybe we wouldn't have to do that anymore.

 Oh freddled gruntbuggly,

GroupI implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes,
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon, see if I
 don't!
