Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree that locks/pressure points are more effective, and a throw would be best done in such a way as to stay in contact with the throwee, just in case they get back up. The problem with relying on locks and pressure points is that they rely on pain for effectiveness. Get a meth-head hopped up on everything from under the sink and pain isn't an effective deterrent. A properly applied lock affects the structure and physically prevents movement, but only if the thug isn't willing to sacrifice a body part to get you. Now at a high enough level of mastery, you will prevail even against the unwilling with a lock. I'm skeptical of pressure points; I can endure a lot of the ones that are supposed to put someone down; pain is just pain. If you're talking about things like Dim Mak (sp) that are supposed to short-circuit qi flow, that's beyond my experience and I can't comment. Finally, I urge people to study full martial arts rather than strictly self-defense, because you get a broader context for what you are doing, and learn principles that can be applied when the situation goes pear-shaped and leaves the training scenario behind. (Insert audio clip of John Clees instructing students to attack him with a banana here.) Self-defense courses are usually short and scenario-based, which is all well and good if you encounter the exact scenario, but the gods help you if you get taken outside of scenario parameters. And as for strange environments, there are ways to minimize that problem, which you point out quite correctly. There are ways to move your feet so as to account for rough terrain, changes in level etc while remaining on balance. This is one of the first things we learned in Daito Ryu. It might sound odd, but I spent two months learning how to walk again at the age of thirty-five. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
There's modern fencing which is done on a strip, and then there is the medieval fencing that I have studied which is done wherever; think D'Artagnon or Inigo Montoya. I'll save a longer discussion of how to do this for the other list if it comes into being, but suffice it to say that no, you don't necessarily need to see your opponent's blade. It's not easy, but there are ways to move to seek tactile contact that also defend you until you know what you're doing. I've managed to catch my teacher with a proper lunge more than once. Christopher Bartlett At 10:47 PM 1/3/2008, you wrote: Fencing, really? That is one thing I'd love to do, they have it where I'm studying, but I thought you had to see the sword of your oponent, Chris, I'd really be interested to know how it's done, or maybe I've got the wrong idea about the rules of fencing? Is fencing where you're both on a mat with swords and circle each other trying to get a stab? Hi Mich, welcome! Well it looks like you get a prize! lol! You're the first poster! Congratulations! (insert huge Monty Python style fanfare here) thanks very much for your interest and I'm hoping as well to have some good conversations about self defense as a VI person... One of my favs which is mainstream, was model mugging, which relies on the attackers wearing completely padded suits so that the participants can defend themselves without pulling punches or worrying about hurting the instructors... hi Cara well no I have not had any experience with self defense. I think though why the topic has interested me is because I live above a dance studio. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Hi. Karate? I've read up on it a bit by chance, and it appears that it's similar to judo in sorts. I recall it mentioned you hold on to your opponent's gui, I assume that's like the coat with it's lapel type thingy, only it's named differently in this case when you're going to start. after that, I believe things change, as they do in wrestling and judo, so that contact is maintained as much as possible. The moves are just different. If contact is broken, the action stops, and is resumed again, in proper contact. I could be off my marks on that, but I took me a stab, guessing in dim and cloudy light where the target was. - Original Message - From: ari [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2008 5:43 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence Hi all, This might be off-topic, but I just don't know where to ask and it's sort of a question of having fun or entertainment for blind people. Considering that you have already been impolite by even posting this message in the first place, what is the difference? Please everyone, let's get back on topic. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
You can learn self defence, if the teacher is nice enough to do one on one for a few lessons to get you going. But if you can't find someone helpful. if found in that situation. Just get them close, like a arm away and let them have it. i usually grab with one hand and do damage with the other. Being that close to them keeps them from doing much damage to you also. Just remember don't start it, because you always have self defence to tell the cops when they come, and if your doing the right damage they will come. Some training can help when it comes to close combat. At 02:37 AM 1/3/2008, you wrote: Hi Dakotah, Thanks for that, wow you've done a lotin that field. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
As I said briefly in my earlier post, the best hand-to-hand, unarmed, technique would be anything involving throws, locks, or pressure points. Also, if you are a cane user, that can function as a pretty nice deterrent. Plus, if you're being attacked for real, don't worry about innocent bystanders. If they're standing there watching you get beat up, they could probably do with an accidental kick. Basically, go after anything that goes after you, and expect to get hurt. Unfortunately, without proximity, I can't teach you anything. Your statement is correct concerning most of the weapon. If they aren't concealed, sai and nunchaku are still legal in most of the United States, and a staff is easy enough to come by. A cuboton, pronounced koo bo than, is a very cheap weapon, a five-inch metal cylinder sharpened to a point that can be hung on a keychain. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
here in south africa we use shock machines for self defence. Its a little machine with 2 buttons. The one button is pressed to warn the opponent, it makes a beeping sound. And the second button will give the opponent the shock of his life! It will not kill him, just give him a hurtfull shock he won't forget. My dad uses such a machine. Although i haven't used it myself, i think its pretty accessible as it only has 2 buttons as long as you know how to keep the part of the machine that emits the current away from you. Its illegal in south africa. - original message - Subject:Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence From: Trouble [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 03/01/2008 7:18 pm If the weapon can cut, puncture or break bones on impact. they are highly illegal and in most states anything past the width of your hand wither it be a knife or pointed rod is illegal. Hi Nicol, How close must the machine be to the opponent to be effective, and second, the fact that it is illegal, well, just then don't mention it too loudly. Would anyone be interested in continuing the topic of self defense as a VI person on another list?... I was asked this past summer if I was interested in being an instructor in LA so this is something I'm definitely interested in. If people would like, I'll consider creating a list for this... Lemme know off list if you would? Thanks so much and sorry for the additional OT! Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
That's like a stun gun. Lots of places keep tight controls on stun guns and air tasers, but they are workable in some situations. It's really funny that people make hand weapons like knives illegal but a gun can be bought at wal-mart. Not that I'm against guns, but they do much more damage much more quickly...don't you think? Do check with local police, and don't necessarily take any word as the whole truth, not even mine, unless it's official. BTW. If you mean numchucks a chain with one stick at each end. Well no where in the USA is that legal. nor is brass knuckles, thong staff witch is a rod that expands with a press of a button, some states mace or pepper spray and even stun guns. if your going to get something for self defence. Check with your local police to make sure your not breaking any laws that will do more harm to you then your opponent Because some weapons can raise it from self defence to premeditated murder. In this state even pointing a harmless plastic dart gun at someone is called attempted murder. So as you see it don't take much to change the law from something simple to something that you really don't want. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Stun guns require contact with your opponent. They touch two electrodes to their skin. Air tasers use two thin wires attached to darts, like short needles, which puncture the skin and deliver a different kind of shock which is usually more powerful. The words taser and stun gun have become interchangeable, but they are truly not. Tasers have a range of fifteen feet and are usually illegal. Stun guns have an almost non-existent range and are more often allowed. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
I must take issue with the idea that striking is impractical for a blind person. It's a matter of distancing. Get in close and your lack of vision becomes far less of a handicap. In fact, if you've trained yourself to have good tactile and tactical awareness, the contact of one hand on your partner/opponent/attacker should give you a good notion of where the rest of his/her body is. I'm trying to work past that to the point where I can pick up incoming motions/attacks in space before the contact is made. When it works, it's one of the most beautiful feelings I've ever experienced. On a practical evel, movement is your friend. If you are confident of your environment, constant motion will reduce the effectiveness of an incoming attack, particularly if it is unpredictable. Seek to close with your attacker, particularly if he has a weapon. A weapon is only an asset at its optimum range. Get inside that range and you make it a liability. All of that isn't easy, but it can be done. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
I have studied Aikido, Aikijujitsu, Northern Shaolin kung fu and Spanish fencing. Any martial art is accessible if you are willing to put in the time and have a teacher who sees the possibilities. I learn best by having techniques performed upon me and have risen high enough to do some teaching. I have done unarmed and weapons work; the latter is a bit nervous-making when everyone has actual steel katana, but it's more than totally awesome. It requires a lot of self-awareness, since you have to filter out your own body noise (by which I mean a lot more than auditory input) before you can become aware of what your partner/opponent is doing. I encourage any reasonably healthy blind person to study martial arts. Not only is it fantastic exercise, but it will give you that much more awareness of your environment, which, since we operate at a basic awareness defficit, will help you carry yourself with confidence and avoid dangers. The self-defense aspect is there too, but almost the least important. if anyone's interested, I've got a friend that's a triple blackbelt. He's worked with me and taught me some basics. He also taught another blind kid. He was a lot younger than me however. He beet the crap out of a forty something year old guy. This was because he was able to feel the vibrations of his movements, (so he told me). Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Most certainly, that is the case, all of your information is correct. The problem is, most people are going to learn self-defense instead of a martial art. Striking is impractical to start out learning for purely defensive purposes. If a person wants to learn a martial art, for physical or mental disciplinary purposes, more training can be arranged. Also, a concern is that which you pointed out. Familiarity with the environment is usually not a luxury we have. In a training setting, the environment is uniform or at least fairly constant. On the streets, God knows what the environment is like. Strikes, basically, can be used by us with great effect, but that's only after you've grabbed a person, unless you've gotten lots of training. If I've got someone, I'm going to do a pressure point, wrist or arm lock, or throw them hard because that'll do more damage and disable them faster than a strike, based on odds of hitting the target. Remember, these are based on self-defense, not professional martial arts issues. Everyone should know self-defense, but not everyone wants to know martial arts. Fencing, really? That is one thing I'd love to do, they have it where I'm studying, but I thought you had to see the sword of your oponent, Chris, I'd really be interested to know how it's done, or maybe I've got the wrong idea about the rules of fencing? Cool idea Cara, create one. Talking about lists, is there actually a list for if I'm a blind person and I just want to ask questions to other blind people about how to get things done or where to find resources etc, example the self-defence, is there a list where I could have just posted that question and it would be answered by other blind people? Hi all, This might be off-topic, but I just don't know where to ask and it's sort of a question of having fun or entertainment for blind people. I'd like to know are Tai Chi and karate accessible for blind people? I know blindys can do Judo, but what other martial arts courses have any totally blindys done and did any adaptation need to be made considering you were practicing with sighted persons, like did the teacher come round and demonstrate the moves? Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Hi Dakotah, Thanks for that, wow you've done a lotin that field. This I think is the main question, because unfortunately there's quite a bit of crime in SA, it would be helpful to learn self-defence, but I know the whole punching and kicking thing is impractical to blind people, but I've always wondered if a person were to try and attack you in real life, what's the best form of doing self-defence fight back. I was wondering this after reading a post about a blind guy who was basically assaulted and slapped, kicked and slapped in the street, when someone's trying to kick you and you don't really know from where they're coming, what's the best SD techniques or form of SD to learn for a blindy in open combat.
