[Audyssey] Monty jumping.
Hi. One thing about jumping I think people have failed to note is if you do space and left arrow the left arrow key will both jump you in to the air, and in that direction. They are not two Separate actions. The only time you want to do a space and up arrow is when you want to jump strait up to grab something which is directly above you. Liam Erven wrote: There is also nothing wrong with pressing space and up to jump up. Seems logical to me. In all the consoll games I played jump sent you up in to the air, and then you could use arrows to move. I can't think of any games that does what monty does. though, I could be forgetting one. when jumping. from what I've seen, you can press the space bar, and then tap an arrow of your choice and still jump. Maybe it's a bug on this end, but it would make more sent to me if you have to hold down the spacebard to actually jump. I could be mistaken, but that is what happened for me when I played. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2006 1:00 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Monty jumping. That is indeed correct, Liam. Right now, it is as if the space bar prepares you for a jump. You could hit the space bar, wait thirty seconds, then hit an arrow key, and you'll jump. Re: [Audyssey] Monty jumping.
Hi Tom, I think that only some of the keys can be held down and then have another key hit. If the control, shift or alt keys are held down for a while they only send one signal to the computer but if the space bar is held down it sends a signal every tenth of a second or so. At least that is what happens in Visual Basic. And since JFW uses the insert key and others use the caps lock key those probably do the same as the control key. So maybe you should use the control key as the jump modifier since it is the easiest to find. Re: [Audyssey] Monty jumping.
Hi, Liam. No that is not a bug, but actually the way the game currently works. I am not using DirectX DirectInput, but actually Windows keyboard events. The keyboard events don't allow for such combos naturally so I had to cobble it together in the way it was done. That ssaid I am looking for ways to improve the interface for this. I like that idea. That way, you could jump in the direction you're running a bit easier. You could also add in two extra keys which will allow you to face a certain direction without taking a step in that direction. This would be lovely if you were, say, on a ledge. Re: [Audyssey] Monty jumping.
Hi, all. Do keep in mind the keyboard handling I am using doesn't allow for allot of keyboard combos as I'm using the Window Events and not DirectInput. I found DirectInput to flaky for testing so I switched to standard Window key bindings for the moment. So the way I see it simply walk in the direction you want, and then jump using space if I use it that way. Generally, speaking I can't think of a case where you would not want to jump in the direction you were already facing. Re: [Audyssey] Monty jumping.
Tom, In most old school games, there really wasn't a restriction on a pattern of jumping, except for your height. When playing Mario, you could say jump to the right, then hold down left as you reached the highpoint of the jump, and theoretically land right back where you started. Not really realistic, but definitely classic. You could also jump straight up by pressing the jump button, but then tap right and move slightly to the right. That was the way James put it in originally, but as I haven't played the demo yet, I can't comment on which is better--your method, or his. Re: [Audyssey] Monty jumping.
Hi, Ryan. As I have stated so many times today James North was using DirectInput in Monty. I am not do to technical problems with DX DirectInput. As a solution for the moment I am using standard keyboard commands via the Windows OnKeyDown Event. This doesn't allow for quite the same ability of DX DirectInput. What I am gathering from end users they really want a more classic hit space to jump up, and left or right to change direction approach. While the key is down move the player. Well, this is going to be a massive reworking of Input as well as jumping to fix this one, and won't likely come out in the first patch.
