I've tried subscribing to the magazine only list both ways.
I tried with the word subscribe in the subject field and with a blank
letter.
Now usually when you subscribe to a list you get something to confirm your
subscription. But no luck either way.

The problems you are experiencing is do to the fact Ron gave the wrong
subscription info for the magazine list. The correct information is send
a blank e-mail, with no subject, to:
magazine-subscr...@audyssey.org
and you will get a subscription confirmation from mailman.
