i think there might be some issues with smugglers 4 and screen readers,
as when i'm using jfw to play smuggler
ace bar to click on the various
options.
Also, which version of Hal are you using? i'm using hal 9.02.

i decided to try hal with the game, and actually the screen looks a lot better
with hal, with jaws it looks like a mess.
