[Audyssey] audio gaming and the mac

2010-07-12 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
Ok with running windows7 in bootcamp I have been trying all day long and
windows7 professional 64bit in bootcamp refuses to run jim kitchen's games. I
wonder if I should download that windows xp mode from microsoft and try that? I
even tried compatibility mode still, isn't working. System access and screen
readers are working fine it seems its just certain applications are refusing to
run and giving me trouble. For example revo uninstaller is another program
that's not running at all. I'm gunna ask voc rehab to buy me vmware fusion I
think. if they don't I'll just go ahead and buy it at the end of the month.
I even inside revo routed the mouse to the review cursor and right clicked with
no results but a locking up. I have two no three choices here it seems.
1. buy vmware fusion to run windows xp.
2. get mware player and run xp in windows7 .
3. try the xp mode in windows7.
or 4. All audio game developers please update your games so they work with
direct-x 11 and 64bit windows7.

Re: [Audyssey] audio gaming and the mac

2010-07-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
To be honest that is one of the primary reasons why I haven’t upgraded
to the 64bit version of Windows 7. There are far too many older
applications that aren’t fully compatible with the OS, and some
applications such as those written in Visual Basic 6 can’t be really
upgraded to run on the 64bit version of Windows 7. The runtime
libraries are no longer officially supported, the Visual Basic 6
libraries are out of date, and VB 6 applications are compiled to a
32bit platform only. So asking a game developer like Jim Kitchen, for
example, to update his games would literally require a complete
rewrite from scratch in VB .Net or something else that is compatible
with newer PCs.
So that leaves us with a problem what to do. To be frank about it the
Windows XP compatibility emulator that comes with Windows 7 Pro is
crap. It works, but takes up a lot of memory and slows down your PC
quite a bit when running it. It is a CPU and memory hog so I can’t
really recommend it. Especially, if you are already running Windows 7
via Bootcamp etc.
As you pointed out you could run XP itself through VMware Fusion which
works. That would solve any compatibility issues with the games for
certain, but there is still some lag on the CPU and it also takes up
quite a bit of memory to run anything through Vmware. It’s not really
how I would do it, but since you are running a Mac it is probably your
best solution here.
