I've tried. Unfortunately there is no way to hit a bear without him
hitting
you. You have to use a shield or sling shot in order to beat him without
getting hit.

I tried initially to not use any other weapon but the club, but just
couldn't get through the cave world, mostly because of those blasted
bears!
I do sometimes wish it was possible to more easily avoid attacks
