Re: [Audyssey] A SUGGESTION FOR THOM'S SIDE SCROLLER

2008-08-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
Right. The Atari 2600 and 5200 versions of Montezuma's Revenge didn't
have much in the way of music and sounds. As I recall it basically was
the sound of Panama Joe jumping, getting high scores, running, getting a
diamond, dying, and falling. As far as music there was just starting new
level, ending level, and music like that.

Hi Aiden,
I personally handpicked the private testers for this project back in
January of this year. I'm currently not adding any more members to the
private beta team.
There will however be a public beta release once the game gets to a
stable point. At that time people can test it on their platform of
choice and look for bugs and possible problems involved before it goes
to final release.

Hi Will,
No, not at this point. I already have a Mac and a Linux user on the
team, and I trust both to give me good feedback to work out any early
issues with the cross platform versions of MOTA. However, there will be
a public beta release that you can join in to do stability, bug, and
other testing before the project goes live.

Re: [Audyssey] A SUGGESTION FOR THOM'S SIDE SCROLLER

2008-08-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi DJC,
Thanks for your support. Smile.
I just hope I am doing the right thing by rewriting the game engine to
make it multi-platform compatible. I'm not doing it for business
reasons, but for my own personal reasons. I've been using Linux more
than Windows of late, and I felt it was high time that some developer
begin taking Linux and Mac seriously as gaming platforms. Though, as
famous author, Stephen King, once wrote in his introduction
to Four Passed Midnight,
Cash is a wonderful thing. However, when creativity is involved it is
best not too think to much about money. it constipates the mind.
I can confess that piece of advice is all too true. IfI worry too much
about my customers needs, worry if what I will create will sell, etc I
will worry so much over the creation that it never turns out to be much
of anything. Creation is at its best when you run the show the way you
want to do it, and say the heck with everyone else. If everybody loves
it great. If nobody likes it at least I, the creater, am happy with the
end result.

Re: [Audyssey] A SUGGESTION FOR THOM'S SIDE SCROLLER

2008-08-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
As for the name of the new side-scroller its oficial name is Mysteries
of the Ancients. The private testers and I decided this would be the
best title for the new side-scroller, and I have no plans of renaming
the project at this point. I am personally quite satisfied with the new
title.
As for why I wouldn't give it a title like Tomizunta's Revenge it
wouldn't be historically correct. I have never heard of a Myan, Aztec,
or Incan ruler named Tomizunta. There was, however, an Aztec ruler named
Montezuma, actually Moctezuma if spelled correctly, who ruled the Aztec
Empire during the 1520 Spanish conquest of Northern Mexico.
As for converting the potions to amulets there is three reasons I
wouldn't do this in the new side-scroller. First, the original
Montezuma's Revenge used amulets to give Panama Joe invincibility
against monsters for a few seconds, and using them in this game would be
too much like the original. Second, I have completely rewritten the
story line for the game, and the amulets would not really fit the new
story line very well. Third, I don't have any sound effects here I could
use for the magic amulets.
As for the potions themselves you will probably be seeing more of them
in this new game since Angela Carter is searching for a mythical item
roomered to be located in Mezoamerica. It would only make sense in this
case that the ancient Mayans that ruled that part of Mezoamerica would
create healing potions from it, and put them in their temples. So you
will just have to wait and see.
Cheers.

 Hi Will,
Yes, Mysteries of the Ancients is the game that will be offered as a
replacement for Montozuma's Revenge once the game engine and game play
is complete. I am currently doing a pretty extensive rewrite and upgrade
of the side-scroller engine to make it Mac, Linux, and Windows compatible.
Whole I am doing all the upgrades the testers and I have been working on
ways to make the game more fun, a better game, and the end product will
likely be a vastly differen tgame than Montezuma's Revenge in a lot of
respects. Since I got a lot of flack for copying Montezuma's Revenge
this is not a bad thing, and the game will likely be a better product in
 the long run.

Re: [Audyssey] A SUGGESTION FOR THOM'S SIDE SCROLLER

2008-08-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Darren,
Well, at present the entire game is 67 MB. It was larger before, but I
decided to reduce the audio quality from 44100 KHZ to 22500 KHZ in order
to make the game installer smaller plus it won't take up as many system
resources on your computer hardware.
As ffar as actual length I guess we will know when we get there. I can
say it won't be one of those games you can complete in 5 minutes. I am
tentatively looking at 10 to 12 levels for the first release.
It has a much better combat system so you won't just hit an enemy and it
will instantly die. You may have to attack a skeleton, snake, etc
several times before it is dead. Instead of jumping over enemies this
side-scroller is geared for out and out combat with the enemies on each
level.

Darren Harris wrote:
Sounds great tom! So how large do you think this game will be by the end
of it? By the sounds of it, it's not something that's going to be
completed in 5 minutes. At last I hope not I really don't like them
 sorts of games.

 They

That sounds cool. I look forward to te time you'll be able to devote
more time to it. Interestingly enouh though, I found a web site that
sells classic video gmes including the old Atari, and I could have
 sworn I've seen

 the

 Hi Nicol,
As for the name of the new side-scroller its oficial name is
 Mysteries

of the Ancients. The private testers and I decided this would be the
best title for the new side-scroller, and I have no plans of renaming

the project at this point. I am personally quite satisfied with the
new title. As for why I wouldn't give it a title like Tomizunta's
Revenge it wouldn't be historically correct. I have never heard of a
Myan, Aztec, or Incan ruler named Tomizunta. There was, however, an
Aztec ruler named Montezuma, actually Moctezuma if spelled correctly,

who ruled the Aztec Empire during the 1520 Spanish conquest of
Northern Mexico. As for converting the potions to amulets there is
three reasons I wouldn't do this in the new side-scroller. First, the

original Montezuma's Revenge used amulets to give Panama Joe
invincibility against monsters for a few seconds, and using them in
this game would be too much like the original. Second, I have
completely rewritten the story line for the game, and the amulets
would not really fit the new story line very well. Third, I don't
 have

any sound effects here I could use for the magic amulets.
As for the potions themselves you will probably be seeing more of
them in this new game since Angela Carter is searching for a mythical

item roomered to be located in Mezoamerica. It would only make sense
 in
 this
case that the ancient Mayans that ruled that part of Mezoamerica
would create healing potions from it, and put them in their temples.
So you will just have to wait and see. Cheers.

compensate for that. Because I would dearly love an atari I had one
