The first thing was the defence ships for cardacia just happened to be there.
I don't usually go after those for a start.
Secondly luck was on my side that another ship was in range, the ships were
thinly spread out.

Great game! Sounds like they were suffering from a lack of a good combat
strategy from the start. Plus you off balanced them by destroying there
home defence ships from the beginning. That put them on the offensive
and that didn't work obviously.
