I forgot to mention that the STATUS file should also be updated with
the release notes -- this was probably what you were asking about to
 begin with.

I'm still working on this, and I'd like to make sure that the release
number issue is addressed. Rather than rushing it out now, I'm going to
say that it will be out by 22:00 BST - I hope this doesn't cause any
inconvenience.

That's great, I'll do that. Looking at the documentation and the SVN
actions concerning the 3.1.2 release, I can see most of what needs to be
done. However, is there anywhere that the steps are itemised in more
detail, particularly things to do when updating the changelog (both
STATUS file and spec file) and other documentation?

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/ganglia/wiki/how_project_works

This is general overview of how the project works, may not go into too
much detail about the role of the release manager...

detail, particularly things to do when updating the changelog (both STATUS
file and spec file) and other documentation?

changelog: typically the release manager goes through the check-ins
and highlights important bugfixes/new features to be included in the
email. When a GA is ready, then I will paste the same details to the
SF.net release notes. The Wiki page's most recent release notes
should be updated as well.

STATUS: typically you don't need to modify it -- backports that do not
make the freeze cut will stay there. BTW, it looks like Carlo has
already decided the name for 3.1.3:

  1970carenas 3.1.3(avenger): In Development
  1970carenas 3.1.2(langley): Released: Feb 17, 2009

spec file: you don't need to manually modify it -- just up the release
version in configure.in and it'll automatically pick up the new
release version. Make sure you modify $GANGLIA_SNAPSHOT to no prior
to tagging and back to yes after tagging.

I'll be on IRC (irc.freenode.net #ganglia) for the next little while
so feel free to drop by if you have any other questions.

Cheers,

Bernard

[Ganglia-developers] Preparing for 3.1.3

2009-09-16 Thread Daniel Pocock

As discussed a few weeks back, I'm volunteering to manage the 3.1.3 release.

Most of the changes were made a few weeks ago now, and I've been running
some of these patches on several platforms for some time, so I don't
think we need to allow a lot of time for additional testing. What I'd
propose is that 3.1.3 is tagged Friday as a beta, and if it is good,
then we make it GA two weeks later.

If problems are found, then 3.1.3 will not be made GA, and we will aim
to gather feedback and release 3.1.4 in 2-3 weeks. I'm also happy to be
the release manager for that follow-up release if it becomes necessary.

I note that part of the release process involves setting the release
name for the next release - is this up to the release manager's
initiative, or are there some rules for this?

This sounds like a good plan. I am backporting one patch from the status file
that fixes the allow_extra_data configuration directive. I should have it
committed in the next few minutes but well before the Friday tag. ;) As far
as the release name goes, I think it is basically up to the Release Manager.
In the past the release name has kind of been following an aviation theme. But
I'm not sure if that is a real rule or not. Bernard is probably the best
person to answer this question.

Re: [Ganglia-developers] Preparing for 3.1.3

2009-09-16 Thread Bernard Li
Hi all:

Sounds good. After you tag it, I believe the process is to generate
the tarball and put it up in the website's beta area, and have people
test it.

After the release is marked as GA, then we can create a release in
SourceForge and upload the files there. I could handle all that.

BTW, I would be busy starting early Friday afternoon, so if possible,
could you tag 3.1.3 early Friday? BTW, what timezone are we talking
about ;-)

And regarding the release name -- Matt started the tradition with
aviation themes. I have somewhat deviated with Garriott
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Garriott (Space theme). But I
think you can use your discretion for this ;-)

Thanks for stepping up!

Cheers,

Bernard
