Re: g_b About aditya, bitchiness, prophets, and impotence

2006-04-24 Thread Salil

Hi again Aditya,I understand what you are saying, and couldnt agree more that ritualism has overtaken spirituality for the most part, to the extent that most of the so-named prophets (no phropets !) would cringe to see what has become of their well meaning advice.Your concern about the finality of the Bahai prophet's words is so true - its borne out already by Mr. Messenger who in his latest bulletin informs us that Muhammad was the last of them, look no further. Now to the meat of it - You say that you posed your rhetorical question about further prophets in the 'crassest' way because "only when asked in this manner will it provoke a response that exposes the hollowness of the rituals, semantics, and dogmas of all religious faiths". Did it work ? Did it provoke a response that exposed the hollowness of religious rituals ? No, it did not. It simply hurt some people, while others deleted it in irritation and disgust.
If your question were not impolite, there was more of chance that you would be taken seriously, and thence get the response you elicited. Think about it.You are without doubt, at liberty to tell off the bigots, but nothing that you have experienced in your life as a gay man, gives you the right to hurt the unbigoted. Unless you believe that innocents getting killed in military crossfire deserve no apologies.Cheers SalilAditya Bondyopadhyay [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Dear Salil,I shall not dispute or deny your calling me crass. Sometime I feel that I am crass myself, and absolutely justify it as the freedom of my _expression_, without any remorse or regret. I am convinced that I cannot be changed, for I do not want to change. And I think I cannot be
more honest than that. Thanks for writing in anyways. As to the the pointer on Baha'ul'llah, yes I have been reading up on Baha'i literature for some time, and I am generally impressed, except where Baha'ul'llah and the Ba'ab pronuces on homosexuality, and denounces it as the crudest abomination. The Lotus Temple in Delhi for almost 6 years was nearly across the road from where I stayed in Kalkaji. I have had many interesting sessions with the many people from all parts of the world who flock there. What really rankled me is the virulence of the Baha'i dictates against homosexuality, when juxtaposed agains the general message of peace, harmony, and tolerance that permeates the Baha'i faith otherwise. But more interestingly in your pointer is the line 'I'm their final consumation'. The finality of those innocent words will become the dogma of tomorrow when there will be a few hundred million more
Baha'is in the world. Its a growing religion, only over a century old. Much like Islam was at one point. At that time when it was a youth of a religion, Islam was more concerned with the message and less with the dogma and the semantics of finality of its own phrophet. But the similarity is uncanny. Phrophets of all hues seem to be convinced of the finality and the end of phrophethood with them. The 'I'm the latest, best, and only possible version from here on', is the comomon thread to making phrophesies. By the time the dogma has taken roots over the message, Baha'is would also be calling for the blood of the newest phrophet in the horoizon, and his followers. The newest phrophet would be as much an apostate to the Baha'is as Baha'ul'llah was to the muslims of Iran. And by the way another prophet is the leader of the Ahmediya sect, founded by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) in a small and remote village, Qadian,
inPunjab, India, who also followed after Phrophet Muhammad. Read more at http://www.alislam.org/introduction/index.htmlWhich brings me toyour reading of why I asked the question on God not producing any more Prophets. I certainly was not simply curious about religious tradition. I know the tradition, of most major religions, and to be really honest, am not impressed. I posed a rhetorical question in the 'crassest' way because only when asked in this manner will it provoke a response that exposes the hollowness of the rituals, semantics, and dogmas of all religious faiths. The real message of religions remains important, the adherent sadly do not give half ounce of shit about the real message. They are just concerned with establishing their one upmanship, using mindless and mind numbing rituals as a weapon, and often by the process of finding the external
enemy to beat up. Established religions and Fascism have an uncanny similarity in the way they ritualise everything and find some enemy to target. As a homosexual person, I have been beaten up enough number of times by religions and the religious, to have earned my right to be crass. If this offends you, then its a clash between your offence and mine, your pain and mine, and your hurt and mine, so I dont really care. A bigot ina gay listserve will be told off, very

Actually Angel, Aman has a point when he speaks of his lover, as a crucialreason of his offence. For most of us the personal is the political; it takes both courage and insight to be able to articulate it. Its actually much easier to couch whatever be the real reason for our feelings behind glorious pretenses of ideology, nobility, resolve, or faith. Look at it in that light, and there is a validity there. - Aditya

Dear Aditya,

Your poem was good in terms of expressing how strongly you feel about people taking it upon themselves to use religion as weapon against the homosexual community.

There is mildpoint of technicality I wud like to make here. Your sense of rhyme is a lil askew. The first stanza goes ABAB,then, 2nd Stanza onwards it's AABB CC AABB. Thenit reverts back to ABABfora stanza and then once again you follow AABB till the end.
Not that it makes any difference, just making an observation. Obviously non rhyming poemsalso exist.

Andthen again God-Sod!!!Who could have come up thatrhyme?

See, I agree whole-heartedly with you. Its not the religion, its the way some religious leaders of today choose to bend the interpretation of the teachings of that religion to convenience themselves is a problem.

Youget annoyed by such people. And you tell the whole lot of them togo suck a wet door knob! So far I am with you. Even if I disapprove of your language, I like your honesty and directness.I would do the same thing.Depending on how far I am provoked, perhapsmy language wud also be harsher. I don't mind anything you tell this idiot who calls himself messenger.

Butheres my question.

(a) Ifyou have studied the life of prophet Mohd in detail and as you said u like his teaching, (albeit with a certain doubt as to the divine origin of the Holy Quran) so if I may venture an informed guess, you already know why He was the last prophet, Don't you?

(b) And your command of the English language is superb.

So I am still trying to understand, why a person who can write excellent English and who has already studied the life of Prophet Mohd and so I am guessing knows why God did not send more prophets after Prophet Mohd, would ask, I quote,

"Hey, after Prophet Muhhammad, why did GOD go out of the business of creating prophets? What Bankrupted Him..???
"

I can only assume two things.

Either it could be a spontaneous reaction, which forced you to react sharply with anger. If that's the case it still hurts, but I don't mind it all that much. Anyone in a wild rage, can say things they don't mean.

Or

Being equipped with all thatislamic knowledge, you knew what you were deliberately mocking a religious belief, and more importantly abelief that has nothing to do with homosexuality. I mean the

(a) "Bankruptcy" of God in sending more prophets on earth
and
(b)Homosexuality.

Whats the co-relation?

Yourquestion was out of context. Thats why it hurt my lover.

I decided to write to you in the hope of reasoning out and making you realise that it would suit you better to use more neutral tones while adressing a delicate matter. But I feel its no use anymore. The more I try and explain, the more you and otherpeople circle around the main issue without answering me. and the more complicated this becomes. My question remains. Why cant the question
"Hey, after Prophet Muhhammad, why did GOD go out of the business of creating prophets? What Bankrupted Him..???
"
be rephrased in more subtle and polite language?

Despite several attempts at expaining myself over and over againI think I am the only one here who feelsthat its wrong to use that kind of words while talking about religion. ANY religion.

Maybe someday someone as blunt as yourslef,in a thoughtless fitof frustration, will hurt the sentiments oftheguy you love and whenyour lovercomes to you and asks you whyis he in pain, for nofault of his own? And when you would want to protect him as much as I do.Maybe thenyou will understand what I am saying here.Maybe untill that dayyouwill refuse tounderstand.

Its called Karma and Karma, my dear Aditya does not require you to believe in it for it exist.Whats more? Karma is very much to do with the three things you bow down to
i.e Humanity Kindness and Niceness and the lack of them.

I quote
There is enough goodness in being
the three - humane, Kind, Nice
.
I'd rather bow to the three

Humane, kind and nice yeah right! So come againWhich of these three virtues you so nobly follow, wereyou trying todisplay when you composed the question-

"Hey, after Prophet Muhhammad, why did GOD go out of the business of creating prophets? What Bankrupted Him..???"

Hi Samir,The affidavit says that the law should side with the majority's views at the peril of injuring the minority. I simply say that Aditya should respect other's sensitivities even as he freely questions them. The difference is critical. You seek to differentiate between "respecting the other's right to believe in a different religion" and "respect for other's religion". I think this is semantics, i.e. wordplay. Can I claim to respect your right to be a ritualistic dogmatic Hindu even as I abuse ritualistic dogmatic Hindu tradition ? I may question it, but why do I have to be abusive towards it ? Similarly, there is a difference between suggesting that Christians should stop eating pork because Muslims think it's wrong, and suggesting that Christians stop making fun of the Muslim belief that eating pork is wrong. In the first case, I would
be asking Christians to modify their lifestyle, in the second I would be asking them to allow someone else the same privilege as they have - to follow a chosen lifestyle. Again, the difference is critical.I do not think it is a question of heightened religious sesnsitivities - that is a real problem today, but has nothing to do with the matter we are discussing here - which is whether it is necessary to provoke and abuse without reason. Its simply a difference of opinion on what politeness constitutes.By all means, react agressively to hate. But in doing so, dont be a bull in a china shop. As I said to Aditya in my other email just before this one, innocents getting killed in crossfire deserve apologies, and similarly the unbigoted on this list, deserve to not have their articles of faith trampled on merely to satisfy someone's whims.Cheers Salil

Darling Travis,
Sero-sorting! that is good and true in theory. But when you pick up your next fuck from the park and ask him his serostatus, you have no way of knowing what he is telling you is the truth. So the onus is on you to protect yourself and if you are positive to potect your partner. The way you do it is by using a condom.

Also most likely than not, youor your partner are fucking around behind the other's back, while you tell each others all those mushy stories of faithfullness and commitment. So even then you have no way of knowing if you or your partner is sero-converting without the knowledge of the other. Protection comes by the way of condoms.

So for the greater good of all, for the time being, take condoms as the HIV vaccine, and not mindless barebacking with supposed knowledge of sero status.

By the time the dogma has taken roots over the message, Baha'is would also be calling for the blood of the
newest phrophet in the horoizon, and his followers. The newest phrophet would be as much an apostate to the Baha'is as Baha'ul'llah was to the muslims of Iran. And by the way another prophet is the leader of the Ahmediya sect, founded by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) in a small and remote village, Qadian, inPunjab, India, who also followed after Phrophet Muhammad. Read more at http://www.alislam.org/introduction/index.htmlWhich brings me toyour reading of why I asked the question on God not producing any more Prophets. I certainly was not simply curious about religious tradition. I know the tradition, of most major religions, and to be really honest, am not impressed. I posed a rhetorical question in the 'crassest' way because only when asked in this manner will it provoke a response that exposes the hollowness of the rituals,
semantics, and dogmas of all religious faiths. The real message of religions remains important, the adherent sadly do not give half ounce of shit about the real message. They are just concerned with establishing their one upmanship, using mindless and mind numbing rituals as a weapon, and often by the process of finding the external enemy to beat up. A bigot ina gay listserve will be told off, very crassly. God can go take a back seat while I speak to his bigots. Best, Aditya

New HIV infections in India almost triple in 2005

NEW DELHI - New HIV infections in India almost tripled in 2005 from
the previous year, but were far below the half a million new cases
seen in 2003, a government report said Monday.

The report, which drew on samples from government hospitals
nationwide, said 5.206 million adult people are HIV infected,
India's National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) said.

The latest data shows that India has 72,000 new HIV cases, increasing
the overall number infected by 1.4 percent.

In 2004, the country reported only 28,000 new cases, which was much
lower than the 520,000 new infections reported in 2003.

The number of Indians infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS,
is second only to South Africa where as many as 6 million people are
infected.

However, the rate of infection in the nation of 1.1 billion people is
0.91 percent, well below South Africa and other sub-Saharan countries
as India focuses on high-risk population to control the spread, NACO
said.

But K. Sujatha Rao, the chief of NACO, told Press Trust of India news
agency, that although India could track infections better and was
spending more money on prevention, the government did not know how
many people were dying of AIDS.

The Indian Council of Medical Research is conducting a study to
estimate the number of death linked to HIV and results are expected
in two months, Rao said.

However, the study may have gaps because 90 percent of the infected
people do not know that they carried the virus, Rao said.

A study by the British medical journal The Lancet last month
suggested a sharp slowdown in the rate of new infections in India's
high-prevalence southern states.

Six Indian states -- Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and
Karnataka in the south and Manipur and Nagaland in the northeast --
account for almost two thirds of HIV infections.

Richard Feachem, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria, said in a recent report that rates of
infection may be higher than official statistics in poor northern
states and that India had outstripped South Africa as the country
with the highest tally of people infected.

g_b Nightmare

2006-04-24 Thread Vivek R Anand

Dear All,

Saturday, April 22nd was an unusually long and hectic day for me. I had a series of meetings lined up. Early in the morning I had also slipped in the bathroom and injured my left foot rather badly.

I decided to call Sumeet who works with me at the office and also drives well to drive me around during the long day.

At around 7.30 in the evening I reached Hotel Lands End at Bandstand for my last meeting with the head of Humsafar’s International Health advisory board who was in Mumbai for a day.

I told Sumeet that I will be back from the meeting by 9.30 and if he was hungry he could to the sea side restaurant at bandstand and eat.

I wrapped up my meeting at around 9.45 and came out. I did not find my car. I tried calling Sumeet on his mobile but his mobile was switched off.

That was the beginning of my nightmare.

I made innumerable announcements from the hotel desk. I checked the whole of basement parking of the hotel but did not find him. I paced up and down the road and continuously kept tried calling his mobile, but to no avail. I called up his friends. I called up his lover. I called up office but nobody had heard from him.

I had been waiting for him for almost an hour and a half and then I decided to approach the nearest police station. I got into an auto and had barely traveled a km when I saw my car parked on the road near Coffee day. I left the auto and started looking for Sumeet. I was sure that he would be around and decided to wait for him. I had informed the crisis management cell (CMC) at humsafar about the problem I was facing but told them not to rush as I was sure that Sumeet would show up. I walked around the promenade looking for him but did not find him. A thousand thoughts, pleasant and unpleasant kept crossing my mind while I stood on the street waiting for sumeet to show up. The effect of the two Brufen Tablets that I had during the day was wearing off and the pain in my left leg had started bothering me again.

In the meantime I got a call from Amit who also works as part of Humsafar CMC and I asked him to reach Bandstand. It was 1.00 in the night when Amit arrived I decided to get back home immediately for my duplicate car keys, pick some cash that I might need when I approach police. I came home and along with my duplicate car keys I also kept around Rs. 5,000 with me.

Amit and I reached Bandstand at 2.15 in the night but I was not willing to drive away. I was extremely restless and edgy and I wanted to search the place again. We both started walking on the promenade looking for him near the rocks, on the benches, in the small park. I could barely walk when Amit asked me to sit down on a bench. I had just sat on the bench when I heard Amit screaming for me. I got up and ran to find Sumeet lying in the bushes behind one of the benches. We both pulled him out . He was unconscious, his T-shirt and jeans were filled with yellow stains. I shook him hard. He tried opening his eyes and just muttered “someone has given me something” and started vomiting and fell unconscious again. Amit and I lifted him and got him into the car. I really did not know what I should do next?

In the meantime he had started hiccupping violently and vomiting in the car. We just rushed to the casualty of Nanavati Hospital. The doctor on duty examined him and told me that it seemed that he had an overdose of some anesthetic drug and that his condition was serious. He told me that we needed to admit Sumeet in the ICU. I ran to get his admission papers done when the counter informed me that I had to give them a deposit of 20,000 rupees. I was barely carrying 5,000 with me. I offered my credit card that was not acceptable to them. I told them to accept 5,000 and get him admitted and I would go to the nearest ATM and withdraw money but he asked to get the money first. I rushed back to the casualty and pleaded with the doctor but he said he was helpless.

Amit told me that we could take him to Cooper. Once again we both got him into the car and rushed to Cooper.

At Cooper the policeman on duty was not very cooperative and told me to take him to Bhabha in Bandra as the incident had happened in Bandra. I could not take any more of it and I blew my lid. To my luck the medical officer and one of nurses on duty recognized me as Humsafar (we have an old collaboration with Cooper hospital) and they jumped into action. The policeman was told to take my statement and inform Bandra police to come to Cooper. We rushed Sumeet into the ICU and the doctor on duty told me that they were going to give him a stomach wash but I had to sign the consent form and give them permission. I had little choice and no time to discuss. Sumeet is my kid and I had to take this responsibility. I signed the consent form and the process of stomach wash began. The next half an hour was an ordeal with three of us holding sumeet while the doctor kept passing the tube through his nose and in his state of unconsciousness he reacted
