stud_ of bombay shared his experiences of early brush with sexual experiences with a guy. I wonder in how many cases this happens and guys turn gay. I mean it is a well known fact that some % of guys can become gay because of this (someone in their family doing crazy stuff when they are kids) but is it true for each gay person. I don't think so. I have gay friends from various countries of the world(that's the advantage of living in US) and they had perfect childhood just like me or anyone else, and attraction for men came very naturally to them just like it came naturally to me. So my point is such instances should not be taken as a general rule that all gays had gone through such experiences in their childhood and that turned them gay. Hello Geoffrey; I sympathize with you and your situation, yes I too was raised in a homophobic culture and society, I married had three children, and finally divorced my wife, since Icould no longer stand her judgmental, cruel, and overbearing approach to me. Not because I was intersted in men. One day I just walked... I went through a lot of emotional turmoil in those days. Now in this country (Canada) being gay is primarily and accepted thing, except for the right wing politicians and religons. It is so much easier for people to live an authentic life style. We now have teenagers who date same sex openly and it is accepted and increasing as each day goes by. We have young people proudly proclaim their bisexuality and openly experiment. Times have changed here, and they will change there too. The table have turned and my exwife and people like her have to eat crow now. It is actually illegal for people to speak of gay people in a derogatory capacity. Dear Friends, Just because they are universal, they do not belong to anybody and yet to everybody. So while one cannot be forced to accept it, a person or a group for that matter, cannot force everyone else to reject it either. That in a nutshell is the essence of a symbol. But a symbol means more than just that. It becomes an anchor around which a whole set of action grows, activism develops, emotions are created, resources mobilized, sometimes even lives sacrificed. All of these add to the value; call it brand-equity if you wish, of symbols. Much work has happened, which has added much of that value, at the cost of much effort of millions, to the universal red ribbon symbol of HIV activism. The unsubstantiated, if not illogical sentiment of one that it wants her to commit suicide at seeing it [without any explanation as to why] is not reason enough to reject that much work and efforts. Nor is it reason to reject for that matter, the resources that have been mobilized and committed around that symbol, which in turn provides succor and life support to many suffering millions, or help save lives. Therefore, no matter what the Bangalore convention adopts and feels, the red ribbon is going to stay here for some time. We can choose to contribute positively to it, or we can choose to engage it in an insane fight. The choice is ours individually to make. I have a small suggestion to make to the Bangalore convention wallas. The major world conferences will continue to be organized around the symbol, and major donors will continue to subscribe to it, so here is a dare. Please put your money where your mouth is, and go out there and reject or refuse all funding from those who subscribe to the symbol. More importantly don't apply to major conferences for scholarships and support, nor attend them. If you can do this you are people of conviction and my sincere respects are with you, even if I disagree with you. If you cannot, then please know that by opening your mouth on this non-issue you have actually successfully placed your foot in it. Trying to become straight will not help anyone. I could not accept my attraction to men since i was brought up in a society where i learnt that getting attracted to females is the only natural way. In my deepest desire to become a straight person, i even got married. But finally i had my first kiss from a man at the age of 35. and go to bed with a man. Do u think i had not tried to keep my thoughts under control and become a straight person? Now i feel free as i have come out recently to my sister. yet a long way to go. The real question for me is not why I'm gay but really why it is so difficult to accommodate my orientation into the social patterns of life without being deceitful or consigning a partner to a lifetime of frustration. courtesy gb = Dear Rashmi, Real Sacrifice is something on which one can write a thesis. But I shall say here what it has come to mean to many people I encounter, especially gay ones who have 'sacrificed' their happiness to please their parents, conform to society, and get married. Sacrifice there is the resort of the coward, who does not have the courage to stand up for his beliefs, nor the honesty to face and acknowledge his own desires, but has ample meanness to cheat another individual in to a loveless marriage. Sacrifice is just a façade to justify, nay glorify, the spinelessness of individuals. Sacrifice is the misnomer given to the lack of guts to really sacrifice ones share of the family property, to sacrifice one's 'good name and reputation', to sacrifice the security of'acceptability', to sacrifice the fight to 'retain the right to equal treatment' no matter what etc etc etc. Net net, don't bother!
