It's a year of major version bump in GIS. Proj 6 (2x3), PostGIS 3, possibly
pgRouting 3. Three is a popular GIS version number this year.
I'd +1. Only question is whether you have plans for even more major API
breaks this year, so that 3.0 sticks for a little while.

+1 to calling it 3.0 and to your proposed plan.
Thank you Even.

+1 Calling it 3.0 would definitely help non-developers understand how
different/better things are.

Hi,
As a feedback from the previous motion, it appears that GDAL 3.0 would
probably better reflect the API & behaviour changes that have been done,
and
be in accordance with our HOWTO-RELEASE procedure and semantic versionning
rules.
I'm OK with that change.
If we decide for that, the

Here, a few blog posts, twitter, a few bug trackers of other projects. Not a
massive PR campaign on TV for sure :-)

I have been wondering about calling it 3.0 as well. How much
communication about 2.5 are you alluding to?
Is it more work to relay that 2.5 had a very short lifespan (i.e. never
released) and then we went straight to 3.0, or to spend the next few
years explaining why 2.4 and 2.5 are not

Yes, that would be a bit annoying to rename it now, at least in terms of
communication since GDAL 2.5 is already known to be the version with the SRS
revamp. Would have

Even,
Did you give any more thought to calling this release 3.0 because of the
breaking changes? Too late for that?

Hi,

usual and fixes will go into
