phrases was never considered part of the formal documentation and is out of
date in a few respects. It would be a worthwhile exercise to get this
updated.
Most other uses of x. and y. should be fixed, though I just see one more in
the user docs.

Unless there is something weird I don't understand, there should be no
difference.
I was suggesting it as a way to purge older style permitted code that would
tend to just confuse anyone that wasn't around then.
