I am not sure that this should be the case:

I suspect that this approach would invite mail loops and/or defeat
some anti-spam measures.

For email purposes, the name 'jsoftware.com' refers to a farm of
google mail handling machines, and the name forums.jsoftware.com is
the jsoftware.com web server and mail archive.

For web browsing purposes they are the same machine (but with
different "virtual hosts" and, thus, different content).

Put different: it seems like what you're suggesting is that the
jsoftware mail archive should be prepared to step in front of google's
anti-spam measures for anyone who has the knowledge and motivation to
take advantage of this detail.

That said, note also that there is some evidence of decay related to
some of google's implementation (for example: the signature failure
visible in the headers of the message you sent). So further decay in
this context might be harmless (or, slight chance: catastrophic).

Anyways, I hope this sheds a little light on the situation for you.

Thanks,

You send email to j fora regularly, hence you most probably have the
address automatically filled in,... , hence no problem.

Will try to remember this. :) "Less is better."

Thanks

PS.: If the email sent (by mistake) directly to sth@forums.jsoftware
(ie. not coming from google's front-end machine) were automatically
resent to sth@jsoftware (the machine it was supposed to go to), I would
expect that there would not be any trouble at all.

You can thank spammers, and the annoyance they've generated, for your
appreciation of that quirk.

Anyways, personally, ... I have never sent email to
@forums.jsoftware.com and I have no idea why I should want to.

The resulting rule is: use the shorter email address when you have to
choose in this context.

Good luck,

That is actually the page I consulted several times in the past in order
to check what to do...

Today (again), I sent my email, then checked the web archive of messages
to see if the message arrived (since I didn't see it had arrived in my
e-mail), noticed it didn't, checked the page you mentioned above, and
resent the email to the right address.

The biggest problem for me is that there is no clear sign of failure.

Hi Ruda

Please see https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/System/Forums#Mail_Routing .

It would be nice if the forums.jsoftware.com address were completely
hidden, but I don't know how to do that.

On my iPhone, as soon as I type a group/fourm name in a To; field (programming,
chat, General, beta, etc.) it fills out the appropriate ...@Jsoftware based on
past emails I have sent before.
To access Jsoftware sites, I have a first menu page app folder that includes
j602 reference, Nuvoc, Jreference, Fourm Search, etc., all the Jsoftware pages
I frequently visit.

[Jgeneral] @jsoftware.com vs @forums.jsoftware.com

2020-02-06 Thread rsykora
Hello,

as I bumped into this several times before, I want to ask:
Is it really necessary to have both @jsoftware.com and
@forums.jsoftware.com? I never remember the right one to send
a message to... (And in the end I tend to send to the wrong one,
to the latter.) And if both are needed, do the emails going to
@forums... have to be discarded?

Thanks
