2022-11-04 Thread Nathan Hartman
Dear Apache Incubator Community,

I would like to call a VOTE to graduate Apache NuttX from the
Incubator to the status of Top-Level-Project (TLP).

The NuttX PPMC has held a community vote to graduate [1] and the vote
passed [2]. Following a community discussion [3] to draft our
resolution (see below) and secure a volunteer for Vice President of
Apache NuttX, and the gentle nudges we've been getting from our
mentors and the Incubator community to take this important step,

I am pleased to call this VOTE:

[ ] +1 Yes, Apache NuttX (Incubating) is ready to graduate from the
Apache Incubator to the status of Top Level Project.

[ ] +0 No opinion.

[ ] -1 No, Apache NuttX (Incubating) is NOT ready to graduate (please
state reason(s)).

This vote will remain open for at least 72 hours.

Some project highlights since incubation:
* Incubating for over 1000 days (since 2019-12-09)
* Website migrated to nuttx.apache.org

* 18 PPMC members
* 26 committers

Here's an idea:

In addition to mentor sign offs, add an additional checkbox for a PPMC
sign-off, but there must also be a link to a PPMC [VOTE] thread to
accept its own report and sign off on it.

This might make it possible for the PPMC to avoid a "missing report"
because of mentors' schedules which are beyond the PPMC's control,
while demonstrating that there is a functioning PPMC.

> [4]https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NUTTX/Validating+a+staged+Release

Hi all,

Pleased to submit my vote:

Summary:
+1 to release (binding)

Per Alan's request for size information [1]:

* NuttX-11.0.0-RC2, b-g474e-dpow1:nsh configuration:

$ arm-none-eabi-size nuttx
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 107623 6722012  110307   1aee3 nuttx

* This is a big improvement over NuttX-10.3.0-RC4, same config:

$ arm-none-eabi-size nuttx
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 117843 6362256  120735   1d79f nuttx

Text is reduced by 10220!! Data increases slightly by 36, but bss
decreases by 244. Great work everyone!

Please note that for future releases, I would like to build in 'ostest'
for additional verification. Today I built and tested such a
configuration on this board for this release. Soon I will open a PR to
upstream this new config as b-g474e-dpow1:ostest.

Compared to b-g474e-dpow1:nsh, it adds the following configs:

+CONFIG_BUILTIN=y
+CONFIG_NSH_BUILTIN_APPS=y
+CONFIG_TESTING_OSTEST=y

and, because ostest currently fails when priority inheritance is
enabled, it removes the following configs:

-CONFIG_PRIORITY_INHERITANCE=y
-CONFIG_PTHREAD_MUTEX_DEFAULT_PRIO_INHERIT=y

Here is the size information for that build:

* NuttX-11.0.0-RC2, b-g474e-dpow1:ostest configuration (not yet
  upstreamed):

$ arm-none-eabi-size nuttx
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 179819 6684812  185299   2d3d3 nuttx

Additional notes about this build:

1. I noticed that to be able to run 'ostest' from NSH the configuration
   needs CONFIG_BUILTIN and CONFIG_NSH_BUILTIN_APPS. Do we want to make
   CONFIG_TESTING_OSTEST depend on those?

2. I noticed that the 'openocd' incantation in the README.txt of
   b-g474e-dpow1 is incorrect, at least on my system, even though I
   wrote that file! I will open a PR soon to fix that. The incantation
   that worked for me now is:

   $ sudo openocd -f interface/stlink.cfg -f target/stm32g4x.cfg -c
init -c "reset halt" -c "flash write_image erase nuttx.bin 0x0800"

Neither of the above issues is a showstopper.

This is very cool!

Thank you for your very candid proposal, and demonstration site. Your
assessment of licensing concerns in particular and interest in joining
the ASF specifically because of the high bar for bringing in 3rd party
code is, I think, a good fit here.

Although I am inundated with other work at the moment and will
probably not be able to contribute to this project, I do think that a
move to ASF should benefit Baremaps and the ASF in the long run, and I
would like to offer my words of encouragement.

Cheers,
Nathan

Hi all,

Pleased to submit my vote... Hopefully 4th time's the charm!!

Summary:
+1 to release (binding)

Per Alan's request for size information [1]:

* NuttX-10.3.0-RC4, b-g474e-dpow1:nsh configuration:

$ arm-none-eabi-size nuttx
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 117843 6362256  120735   1d79f nuttx

* This is a slight improvement from NuttX-10.3.0-RC0, same config:

$ arm-none-eabi-size nuttx
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 117851 6362256  120743   1d7a7 nuttx

* For comparison, same configuration on NuttX-10.2.0:

$ arm-none-eabi-size nuttx
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 115331 6242500  118455   1ceb7 nuttx

This release has gotten bigger compared to last 2 releases (from
10.2.0 to 10.3.0-RC4, text increases 2512, data increases 12, bss
decreases 244). As pointed out by Xiang Xiao in [2], the increase is
(probably) mainly attributed to str_escape() from apps PR-861,
cmd_truncate() from apps PR-1034, and realpath() and getcwd() from
nuttx PR-5465. If anyone wants to get involved in NuttX development,
these might be interesting areas for improvement. :-)

Thanks Duo for checking. Did you see any files that do need to be
mentioned in LICENSE?

Also is there a HOWTO how to run the rat check on our repo?

Hello,

For a podling to be successful, it must have a community. Have you tried to
reach out to some of the other offshoots of YCSB to discuss the possibility
of building a consolidated community around YCSB in the form of a ASF
podling?

Cheers,

I had a bit of trouble understanding it as well, but from what I picked up
it sounds like an API and library to read and write industry-standard file
formats used in CAD/CAE/CAM systems, with ability to version control those
files or at least provide meaningful diffing of these formats.

STEP was mentioned several times. Not sure if that refers to the 3D file
format that's used as a data interchange between CAD systems, or is an
acronym for something else.

Should be interesting to hear more about it.

Nathan

Hi all,

I would like to thank the Incubator community for adding me to the
IPMC and am proud to cast my first (binding) vote in the IPMC for the
latest NuttX release:

+1 (binding) to release Apache NuttX (Incubating) 10.1.0

I checked:
* Signatures
* SHA-512 sums
* Incubating in artifact names
* LICENSE, NOTICE, README.md, DISCLAIMER-WIP present in both tarballs
* Build and run b-g474e-dpow1:nsh configuration successfully
* ReleaseNotes

Notes and observations:
* In "apps" repository, apps/wireless/wapi contains a separate LICENSE
  file. This is fixed in PR-704 [1] and the fix will be in the next
  release.

Thanks to everyone for making this release possible!

Cheers,
Nathan

Do you mean that you get:

nuttx/LICENSE

or

/nuttx/LICENSE

If it's the first case, I think that's usually desirable because otherwise
the users may untar expecting to get one folder with all the contents in
it, but end up getting a bunch of directories and files instead. When that
happens in a directory containing many other files, it creates a big mess.
Also as NuttX needs nuttx/ and apps/ to be sibling directories, it might be
confusing if there's no enclosing directory. (The apps/ distribution
provided by our project is optional and the user may substitute their own.)

If it's the second case, then I agree we should fix it.

What incantation are you using to extract the contents?

That distinction is slightly confusing but the PPMC voted successfully to

Subject: [VOTE] Release Apache NuttX (Incubating) 9.1.0 [RC2]
To:

Hello all,

This is a call for a vote to release Apache NuttX (Incubating) version
9.1.0.

The Apache NuttX community has voted on and approved a proposal to
release
Apache NuttX (Incubating) version 9.1.0.

We now kindly request the Incubator PMC members review and vote on this
incubator release.

NuttX is a real-time operating system (RTOS) with an emphasis on
standards
compliance and small footprint. Scalable from 8-bit to 64-bit
microcontroller
environments, the primary governing standards in NuttX are Posix and
ANSI
standards. Additional standard APIs from Unix and other common RTOS’s
(such as VxWorks) are adopted for functionality not available under
these
standards, or for functionality that is not appropriate for deeply-
embedded
environments (such as fork()).

Because this project targets embedded systems there is more complexity
involved in the build process. Two starting points:

My vote:
+1 (non-binding).

  of.version).
* Incubating in artifact names
* LICENSE, NOTICE, README.txt, DISCLAIMER-WIP present in both tarballs
* Successfully build and run b-g474e-dpow1:nsh configuration (NEW in NuttX-9.1)

Dependencies:

* kconfig-conf from NuttX tools repository

Other dependencies from Debian packages:
* binutils-dev 2.31.1-16
* bison 2:3.3.2.dfsg-1
* flex 2.6.4-6.2
* gperf 3.1-1
* libelf-dev 0.176-1.1
* libgmp-dev 2:6.1.2+dfsg-4
* libisl-dev 0.20-2
* libmpc-dev 1.1.0-1

* libusb-1.0-0-dev 2:1.0.22-2
* libusb-dev 2:0.1.12-32
* texinfo 6.5.0.dfsg.1-4+b1

Thanks to everyone for making this release (candidate) possible!

Cheers,
Nathan

Welcome! Are there any formalities that we need to do (vote etc)? Just
in case we do, I am fully in support!

Also, just today I sent a (admittedly long) email (NuttX: More than
just code) where I explained that we need a lot of help in many areas.
Of course, code is important, but we need people with other skills
too.

Thanks for getting involved.

Nathan

Agreed. Please, if we could get our other mentors, Flavio, Junping,
and Mohammad, to check out our release artifacts and vote, and also I
wouldn't want to be limiting ourselves to just our mentors; I'd love
it if we'd see interest from a wider audience here in the incubator!
Thank you all for your great work and looking forward to your feedback
and votes!

Thanks,
Nathan

Hello,

The NuttX report has been submitted.

This should be documented clearly under expectations from IPMC members. If
there is a period of inactivity after which IPMC members will be removed,
then people should know this up front.

I vote:
+1 (non-binding)

to show my support for NuttX becoming an Apache podling and in
gratitude for both the Apache and NuttX communities, respectively.

Thank you,

Thank you, Greg.

I've subscribed to this mailing list and I'll await further instructions...

FWIW I already have my ICLA on file (I'm a member of the Apache Subversion
PMC) so that should be one less step. :-)

Let me know of anything I can do to help...
