Robin,

Please add Wilkins to #gentoo-powerpc. Thanks!

Re: [gentoo-dev] [RFC] Adding two USE flags to 2008.0's profiles

I'm thinking of adding both the bluetooth and usb USE flags to the
2008.0 profiles for amd64/x86. I'll be adding just usb for everybody
else, unless they want bluetooth, also.

So why am I asking about this?

Well, I'm wanting to add it to the "2008.0" profiles, not the "desktop"
or "server" sub-profiles. This means it'll hit pretty much everybody.
That being said, this normally enables hardware support, so I see it as
a good thing.

If adding "bluetooth" seems to be a bit much, how about just the "usb"
USE flag? After all, my UPS won't work with apcupsd without USE="usb"
on my server... ;]

I'm cool with USB enabled. I think pretty much everything I use uses or
requires USB. Even the big IBM PowerPC boxes have USB.

All:

As I am no longer an ebuild dev (real life job got in the way) I have a
whole slew of hardware that I'm willing to ship to any gentoo dev for
the cost of shipping alone. The list of hardware is as follows:

1x HP C3700 750 MHz PA-RISC
1x Dec/Compaq PWS 600 600 MHz Alpha
1x SGI Octane2 Dual 195 MHz Mips
1x HP ZX2000 1.4 GHz Itanium2
1x Apple G4 1.25 GHz PPC32

I also have a slew of SPARC hardware, need to go home and catalog that,
not all that sure what all I have. I can answer any questions about the
other specs of the machine upon request.

If anyone is interested contact me off list. I live in northern
California for shipping reference.

G4 has been spoken for.

BTW, when you ship that g4, can you ping me w/tracking if possible? I
will want to work at home the day it arrives.

Re: [gentoo-dev] Seeking questions for a user survey; releng related

2008-01-14 Thread Brent Baude
If the topic of frequent releases is put onto the survey, I would like
to know what users anticipate as part of the new releases because new
releases are based on the tree itself. It has been a while since I have
used a binary distribution, but when I did, I looked forward to new
releases because new versions of X and Y were generally tied to it;
which is not usually the case with Gentoo except where profiles dictate
that. Is the motivation for more releases in part the expectation of
more features? If so, also collecting their suggestions for a features
list would be helpful.

Also helpful would be making sure the user input on releases reflected
all archs he/she uses.

Re: [gentoo-dev] Projects and subproject status

2008-01-09 Thread Brent Baude

For the ppc64 project

Are we fine?

- The induction of the PS3 has helped us a lot. We have more users than
before. Great variance skill-wise amongst those users but interest
level is high. We need more folks on the dev team but otherwise we're
as healthy as we've ever been.
- Just put a ps3 dev profile into portage to begin moving towards our
longer term goals
- Lu_zero and I have added a couple of ps3 specific ebuilds into the
tree; previously were in the cell overlay

What are we going to do:

- Anticipating gcc-4.3 and the love it is supposed to bring,
specifically cell optimizations.

Re: [gentoo-dev] *DEVELOPMENT* mail list, right?

2007-04-08 Thread Brent Baude
To encourage the positive discussion around actual development, I've
been working on the following:

* Upcoming media and stages for the release with the releng team
* PS3 stages and media. This is going quite well and Gentoo, if I can
say so, has been a leader in PS3 adoption. Interested devs, swing by
#gentoo-ppc64; help is welcome.
* Working on an ebuild for the newly released, experimental petitboot,
which is a lightweight bootloader based on kboot for ps3s.
