Will do. I didn't expect there was anyone with it still installed on
their system, since it hasn't been separately installable since I
think 1.17 has been stable since before the transition to git :)

this driver. I've got an ancient netbook with an Intel GMA3600, for
which there is no accelerated Xorg driver, which means I'm stuck with
xf86-video-modesetting.


You must not have updated in quite a while if it's still installed on
your system. The driver has been included in the xserver since 1.17
(with the appropriate blocker).

The driver's not going away, just the separate package :)



You would be correct! Have you any idea how enjoyable `emerge --update`
is on an Atom N2600? :)

I've gone ahead and updated the machine to Xorg 1.19.5, and depclean
removed the old separate package, thanks for the hint!

You should probably update the p.mask message to make that clear.
Possibly maybe even split this driver (and any other that is not
necessary) to a separate mask.

Ack for r128. For MGA, I suspect the in-kernel KMS driver "mgag200" is
what you want to be using. Regardless, it'll continue living a while
longer :)

It's part of the xserver since 1.17. With only 1.19 in tree, there's
no way to use the split package.

Both mga & r128 still have life as drivers for embedded controllers on
server systems. MGA on ~5 year old Dell servers, R128 in the RageXL
variant on similar age Supermicro servers.

I believe this driver now comes with xorg-server regardless, and so to
use xorg-server-1.19.5, you just have to remove the legacy split
modesetting drivers first.

xorg-server-1.19.5:

this driver. I've got an ancient netbook with an Intel GMA3600, for
which there is no accelerated Xorg driver, which means I'm stuck with
xf86-video-modesetting.

Obviously not asking you to keep putting in effort just for me, so what
are my next steps if this package is masked and I later need to update?
