One more for shorewall :-D
I've been using it for a while now. IPtables is just too complicated, and
my server too mission critical. So using shorewall was the logical step :)

There's also a frontend to parted, called QTparted. Which i heard looks a LOT like pqmagic.

I just leftt it alone and not gonna bother with gnome until this is fixed.

Thats mostly becuase those using root are usually looking for help and
asking questions in IRC. while they are in the middle of install or post

I sometimes do that. But i usually use it for like 10-20min. I logout
after i found the answar etc.

Windows won't read or recognise linux partitions (ext2/3 etc etc).
However there is a program called explore2fs, which can allow you to
read, only read, linux partitions.
Its very basic and takes LOTS of cpu power.
I use it all the time when i'm not bothered to reboot to linux to
check something
OR you can just use aplay if you've install alsa as your sound driver.
just replace play with aplay and it should work fine.
But i still like and recommend using the sound server arts. It gets
REALLY annoying when your playing xmms and can't here your emails or
people logging in.

You'll need to start a sound server. When using KDE arts (which is a
sound server) is started. arts puts all thos programs that want to
use sound together. So one program doesn't have to wait for the
other to finish.
You can start arts without using kde. just do "artsd &". Then use
the play comman
I think you get better fonts if you compile openoffice. also it is a
lot more stable. I found that using a compiled version of any
program seems to be more stable then binary that has been compiled
for most types of systems.

Its already available in vanilla-sources. You can try that in the
mean time :-)

Its got a 'd' at the end. So i would assume its a daemon.
therefore i would assume the config file lys in
/etc/conf.d/amavisd.conf
and the startup script in /etc/init.d/amavisd
or something like that.

How is that dangarous?
I usually do update like this:
emerge -uf world && emerge -u world && halt
This works nicely. It upadtes the system and does all the gentoo'ing
and halts.
I usually have CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" so all config files get updated.

Kazaa Lite is a hacked version of Kazaa. But with LOTS of extra
features. No spyware. and is a LOT faster then the original.
Stuff like movie preview (divx and stuff) and data view are great
tools.
I always have it installed, in linux and windows.
Recently i install mldonkey. I think it works on
nit.d/apache start

You should let it do that.
if you look closely you'll see that its removing old packages. and
protecting the new ones.
eg:
sys-apps/baselayout
selected: 1.8.5.8
protected: 1.8.5.9
omitted: none
baselayout 1.8.5.8 will be removed, but 1.8.5.9 will be kept.
This a great feature i
You can goto the individual directory and select the ebuild you want
to emerge. afetr unemerging the one already installed like this:
emerge -C xfree
cd /usr/portage
emerge where-xfreeis/xfree/xfree-0.01
:-)

You have to download and install the latest, which is 2.55. That has
the file sa-learn.
This one is masked in portage. so select the actual ebuild like this:
cd /usr/portage
emerge some-directory/mma/mma-2.55.ebuild
that should do it.

After all this time i should have known it was there.

I made a cron job of a script which runs something like this:

sa-learn --spam --dir .maildir/.Spam/new/
sa-learn --ham --dir .maildir/cur/
sa-learn --ham --dir .maildir/new/

I've installed the latest version of SpamAssassin.
I've collected up soe spam and have some ham. I've made a cron job
of teaching it using this command:
sa-learn --spam --dir .maildir/.Spam/cur/
I used this command, using spam and ham for each folders of my mail.
I use procmail and some other fi

Here's what you do to get it all working.
You install as usual. Loading the ataraid module and pdcraid module.
You compile your kernel with these options:

IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices --->

OK. this is the most frustrating thing i've ever had with Gentoo.
I can boot with the liveCD. I can load the produles, ataraid and
pdcraid. it does work. I install successfully. Then i install Grub.
I follow the howto and do root=/dev/ataraid/d0p1
My /boot is a seperate partition in hda1.
But it
Why not try and use IMAP instead of POP. there's a howto in

if you check the updated howto it does say to emerge portage before a sync.
Yes MOST of the time it is VERY important to install/upgrade portage first.
After update run sync aswell

Just configure your p3 to p3 optimized, then compile it with build pckage
option and thats it. There's an option in make.conf that makes ALL packages
in binary so you can use them over and over. My server has been installed
like this from right from the beginning which helps, especially with things
