What type of nvidia-card have you?
I have older card and this works only (or older) this version of nvidia-drivers:
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776-r1
nvidia card (lspci output):
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV28 [GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP

3 days before changed I the cpu type in /etc/make.conf file
space is problem for me. Use i reiserfs?
