The only way to even attempt to install it is to retrieve the ebuild from sources.gentoo.org (gentoo-x86 - ignore the name as the same tree is used for all archs). However this will almost certainly fail due to issues with dependencies and patches. To my knowledge there are currently no plans to release a 2009.x profile. Profile updates are generally little more than changes to the default use flags. Some services / daemons will pick up changes on the fly, but generally they don't in my experience. Programs which are not services / daemons will pick the changes up the next time they are run. Thanks. Kind regards, Henk. This package is masked for removal because it's unmaintained. That means upstream aren't releasing updates or working on the code in any way. You need to consider that this introduces problems with the software working with newer versions of its dependencies and the potential security issues. (No matter how great a code djb thinks he is) Just because a package keeps functioning, doesn't mean it's safe to keep. You have to consider security issues, bugs, etc. Uninstalling it and installing it from source is plain silly. Re: [gentoo-user] Trouble with portage
You have several issues here. First of all, a tip: If a portage upgrade is available, do emerge portage first. New versions of portage often have new or improved features - in this case portage 2.1.6 includes, among other things, the ability to automatically handle most blockers. The blocker says that gamin 1.10 is blocking the gamin-server 1.10 package. This looks to me like gamin has been split into multiple parts or renamed. portage 2.1.6 should handle this block automatically. On to your next issue where 2 versions of firefox are being pulled in. Re: [gentoo-user] Re: dispatch-conf problem

You can if you have use-rcs=yes in /etc/dispatch-conf.conf, which the OP is probably using as the post mentions the archive directory. In fact, I have rcs=no, but the directory does have files in it, so if I know which file to copy back, I can restore things -- but my questions remain -- what is the file naming conventions for those files and what happens if I update the same file again? If you have rcs=no, the files are, to my knowledge, the previous version of the configuration file and use exactly the same filename. In my experience dispatch-conf will _always_ ask about a file the first time it encounters it. Once it has asked you once, it then knows about the state of that file and can obey things like the unmodified rule when a new version of the file is considered. You can check the differences between 2 files using diff, eg: diff /etc/config-archive/etc/init.d/fsck /etc/init.d/fsck The format is: diff old-file new-file You may prefer the -u option: diff -u old new Or, in the package of the same name, colordiff: colordiff -u old new There are also graphical diff tools (eg. kompare) AllenJB
Re: [gentoo-user] Understanding slotting of KTorrent

But so is 3 too... I filed an issue on this - see http://bugs.gentoo.org/250279 for the response AllenJB
