[gentoo-user] Digests without attachments

[gentoo-user] About permissions, etc.
Hello! I am a bit confused about some matters related to permissions. Here is a part of my fstab file: Sirrah ~ # cat /etc/fstab ... /dev/hda9 /mnt/giga hfs defaults,umask=0 0 0 /dev/hda10 /mnt/Sigma hfsplus defaults 0 0 /dev/hda11 /mnt/SigmaX hfsplus defaults 0 0 ... and here are the contents of /mnt: Sirrah ~ # ls -l /mnt total 8 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 28 Dec 21 17:00 Sigma drwxrwxr-t 1 root cdrw 38 Jan 21 09:52 SigmaX drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Aug 11 01:49 cdrom drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Aug 11 01:49 floppy drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Dec 21 16:00 giga I want to suppress the write permissions on Sigma and SigmaX. So I did Sirrah ~ # chmod 555 /mnt/Sigma That worked all right, and I went on with Sirrah ~ # chmod 555 /mnt/SigmaX chmod: changing permissions of `/mnt/SigmaX': Read-only file system The error here is surprising, as SigmaX is mounted rw: Sirrah ~ # mount ... /dev/hda11 on /mnt/SigmaX type hfsplus (rw) ... I tried the step of remounting it rw: the error disappeared, but chmod produced no result. SigmaX, strangely, belongs to the cdrw group, and I wondered if that could be the cause of the trouble, so I tried to change it to root; but the answer was again: Read-only file system. Finally, I wondered if SigmaX might have the i attribute, so I tried: Sirrah ~ # lsattr /mnt - /mnt/cdrom - /mnt/floppy lsattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device While reading flags on /mnt/giga - /mnt/Sigma - /mnt/SigmaX It shows no attributes, but there is this error about giga: it is perhaps of no consequence, but it should not be there! [gentoo-user] Booting Gentoo 2006.1 on an iMac
Hello, I am having trouble while installing 2006.1 on my iMac. I have made other installations before, but never had this problem. I am using the Universal ppc disk, and I have followed strictly all the steps in the 2006.1 handbook. I have not made any modules, everything is in the kernel. What happens is that, on the final reboot, I see 10 or 15 lines of text (is that the Open Firmware part?) that disappear immediately. Then there is nothing, and I have to cut the power to go on. I have also made a more complete version of yaboot.conf with macos, macosx, etc. Then the bootloader shows these options (ignores enablecdboot and enableofboot, though). Typing x for macosx starts it normally, but l for linux fails as described above. This is done without an Internet connexion. I haven't got one yet because my new modem is a Speedtouch 510v5 Ethernet type, which works very well with osx, but is notoriously troublesome with Linux (but this is another affair). I should be grateful for any hints. Charles -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-ppc-user] Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
Hello! I have Gentoo Linux 2006.0 installed on a G4 iMac. The keyboard is of the Apple Extended type (109 keys) and the keymap is us. I have sucessfully tested the X configuration by X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf; the test grid shows up, but I cannot get rid of it. I have read everywhere that Ctrl-Alt-Backspace would do it, killing X and bringing me back to the console. But it just does not work for me, and the only way out is for me to use the power switch. Is anybody aware of any dificulties related to the Apple hardware? Thanks for your attention. Charles -- gentoo-ppc-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] ppp-2.4.3-r10.ebuild
It's not easy to install things in Gentoo without Internet access, especially when it's about installing the Internet connexion itself. My ISP uses PPPoA, and I have a Speedtouch USB modem, the installation of which requires ppp-2.4.3. This is not provided by the distfiles, so I used a tarball downloaded under MacOS, which I installed in the ordinary way (which is not the Gentoo way). The Speedtouch pages say that one should (1) write PEER=speedtch in /etc/conf.d/net.ppp0 (speedtch is the name of the modem config file) (2) run rc-update add net.ppp0 default in order that ppp0 start at boot. Thus installed, the thing works, but only up to a point, in that (3) I have to run pppd call speedtch to start ppp, and (4) I must change the default route from eth0 to ppp0 to make the name resolution work. Supposing that these difficulties might result from a bad installation of ppp-2.4.3, and Internet now being available, I looked for a proper emerge, and found ppp-2.4.3-r10.ebuild, which I installed, unmasking it for ~ppc (this is an iMac). That was ok, but the note at the end says that /etc/init.d/net.ppp0 is no longer used and that everything goes through pppd. Then (2) above does no longer make sense, and I am not sure about (1). I tried to run pppd just to see, but there was no result (although no error). From the script, it seems that it might give some messages, but there was nothing. How does it work? What should I do instead of (1) and (2), and shall I be rid of (3) and (4)? I'll be grateful for all hints. Charles -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] Console behaviour
Hello! I believe that my console does not work as it ought to. There are two main troubles. First, the text does not move as it gets written. In order to read the result of a command that produces a substantial amount of text in response (such as reboot or ls /etc), I have to switch to another console and back (for instance alt-F2 then alt-F1). Secondly, the cursor is not visible, and, in an editor (such as nano), I have constantly to hunt for it and move it through keystrokes, which is very inconvenient. gpm is installed and works, using the button emulation (this is an iMac), but only to a certain extent: I mean that it does copy-and-paste, but not cut-and-paste. Hello! I am posting this to both gentoo-user and gentoo-ppc-user lists. My problem concerns the installation of Gentoo Linux on my G4 iMac, using the 2005.1 universal ppc disk. I should first mention that I have done this before, using the 2005.0 disk, and there was no trouble whatsoever. Now I have the same hardware and the same partitions. [gentoo-user] Bash prompt
Hello! I am getting confused with profile, bashrc, etc. The prompt string I want to use is PS1= \W]\$ I therefore wrote it in /etc/profile (at two levels, root and non-root), ~/.bash_profile and ~/.bashrc. If I log in as a plain user (moi), I get this: moi]$ which is all right. But, if I log in as root, I get the basic default bash-2.05b# . I thought that /etc/profile should provide the default, but I was obviously wrong. Trying to mend things, I created two files /root/.bash_profile and /root/.bashrc, writing just PS1 in each. Now, logging in as root, the result is root]$ which is wrong, since $ appears in place of #, as though my syntax of PS1 were incorrect, but I don't see that it is. How am I to clean up all this? I'll be grateful for all suggestions. Charles -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

I understand that I have to choose another font (or character set, or what not, I am very ignorant). I have read about lat0-16, lat1-16, Latin9, ISO-8859-1 (or 9, or 15...), and I feel lost, not even knowing if they are for the X system or the console. Could someone please describe exactly what steps I should take to find a suitable font, check that it contains the wanted characters, and install it in the X system? --2-- Regarding the console, my problem is that I cannot get at it: pressing ctl-cmd-F1 (on this keyboard, cmd replaces alt) produces only a red screen that seems to remain for ever; however, I can get out of it by cmd-F7. Another fishy thing is that changing the default runlevel in /etc/inittab has no effect: I put it to 3 and the system booted at level 5 all the same. Obviously, there are configuration errors somewhere: could someone help me there? Thanks for all hints. Charles -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

But, at the make step, I got this error (text copied by hand): net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_fw_compat.c: In function fw_in net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_fw_compat.c: 83: error: too few arguments to function 'ip_ct_gather_frags' [/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_fw_compat.o] Error 1 I can't properly look at the files, because the console is quite lame. There is nothing very special about my configuration, except that I added support for Firewire, ATM, pppoatm, speedtouch. I would be grateful for all suggestions. [gentoo-user] Re: Installing on Firewire drive?
I had put my question on this list two or three weeks ago, and Mark Knecht was kind enough to take an interest in it. Now, I have made some progress and the problem is different. To summarize: on my G4 iMac, Yellow Dog Linux 4.0.1 is installed on the HD, and I want to install Gentoo on a FW drive. I have more or less done it, using the 2005.0 universal disk. The problem now is that Gentoo does not boot: I get the message Cannot open root device sda11 or unknown-block(0.0). Please append a correct root= boot option. Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0.0) (and, by the way, the colours of the screen are very strange). On my other Linux, I can mount whatever is on the FW drive and inspect it. In this way, I have found these bits: --/etc/yaboot.conf as written by Gentoo on the FW disk: boot=/dev/sda9 device=////sbp-2/: partition=11 root=/dev/sda11 timeout=30 install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot image=/boot/kernel-2.6.10 label=Linux read-only --/etc/fstab as written by Gentoo on the FW disk: /dev/sda11 / ext3noatimes0 0 /dev/sda12 /home ext3defaults0 0 /dev/sda10 noneswapsw 0 0 /dev/hdb/mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0 Looking at this, I don't see how /dev/sda11 could be wrong. But there is the other question of the unknown-block(0.0) and I can't at all see what it means. Could somebody kindly enlighten me? Charles -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Generally speaking you mount *partitions* so it would be mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/firewire-1 Under normal linux you could do fdisk -l /dev/sdb and get a listing of partitions on sdb. You might try to find the equivalent for Yellow Dog I suppose. I run 4 external 1394 drives on x86 so I can help out if you get a better response from one of these command ideas. Good luck, Mark Hello, Sorry for a slight misunderstanding: I mentioned Yellow Dog just to indicate that it had given confirmation that the 1394 drive is well alive, and that its address is /dev/sdb. mac-fdisk is the command that is prescribed in the Universal-2005.0-ppc handbook. It appears to be a Gentoo variant of pdisk or fdisk. Actually the command mac-fdisk /dev/hda (and then P) prints the map of the iMac hard disk, and I could go on from there to install Gentoo. But I would prefer to keep my Yellow Dog in place and to put Gentoo on the 1394 drive, and that is where I have a difficulty. I would have thought that the same command applied to /dev/sdb would open it, but it replies no medium found (not no such file however). That is my problem. Any ideas? Cheers.
