That helped somehow.

It is not that git-annex does compile now. It doesn't, it has some

[gentoo-user] Haskell hell

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi Folks,

Currently I suffer from the bad haskell hell. I need the current
git-annex that is only available in the haskell overlay.

Unfortunately this brings me into the haskell dependency hell. For two
days I am constantly adding keywords for one more package, emerging it,
doing haskell-updater, doing emerge @preserved-rebuild and starting over
again.

It seems that no single package in thatoverlay, that is marked green is
working and I have to add a keyword overwrite for them.

Isn't there a way to escape the haskell dependency hell? Is there a
clean way to compile and use haskell stuff? That is a real nightmare.

Interesting thoughts.

First, cpufreq-set seems to be not available on gentoo anymore. Doesn't
matter, just giving it a try.

It came out, that all build times have nearly the same sys times but the
user and real times vary. Funny, this is a two CPU machine but the build
with -j1 consumes the least user time. Just the real value gives the
same pattern than on the site.

Hi Folks,

I have set MAKEOPTS="-j3" in my make.conf. That is great for most

Is there an option to set -j1 just for firefox package? (and rust, that

[gentoo-user] PSI+ compile error

2018-09-09 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

I try to compile psi+ as I depend on OTR. I added the following to
packages:
   ~net-im/psi- **

and the following to use:
   net-im/psi extras xscreensaver

Unfortunatelly I get the following error nearly at the end:
   make[1]: Leaving directory
'/var/tmp/portage/net-im/psi-/work/psi-/src'
   rm: cannot remove
'/var/tmp/portage/net-im/psi-/image//usr/share/psi-plus/README': No such
file or directory
* ERROR: net-im/psi-::gentoo failed (install phase):
* Installed file set seems to be changed by upstream

I know how I would fix that but I do not know enough about Gentoo
portage builds how to fix that.

Anybody an idea how to fix that?

Re: [gentoo-user] /boot filesystem, SSDs, TRIM

2018-08-22 Thread Klaus Ethgen

The question should be if and why to use /boot at all on modern systems.

Grub is able to boot from various system combinations. btrfs, lvm,
mdraid, even encrypted disks (however, in the last case, it is not that
trivial to install grub).

So for me there is little to no usage for /boot at all.

[gentoo-user] Slow emerge

2018-08-22 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi folks,

recently, I searched for a reason why emerge --update is that slow. (And
in my eyes, needless slow.)

I found a thread[0] on gentoo forum where I found a really helpful hint.

   emerge --backtrack=0 ...

Would do the same job in 99% of the cases but in about 1/5 of the run
time.

Sadly the thread did not end in a helpful conclusion but maybe it helps
to bring that to the discussion again.

I even would like to have a update check in nagios for my gentoo boxes
too but as it is that slow and consume that much resources, it is to
costly.

   Klaus

Hi,

thanks, but finally I found the issue.

xorg is using its default FontPath of:
/usr/share/fonts/misc/,
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/,
/usr/share/fonts/OTF/,
/usr/share/fonts/Type1/,
/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/,
/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/

To add terminus fonts I needed to add /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-fonts.conf
with:
   Section "Files"
  FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
  FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
  FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/terminus"
   EndSection

Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Slow python execution

The results are even more sever when using the same python version on
the same system.

I did call `python2 -m cProfile -s $sort =ansible-doc -l` twice on
both systems. Once with tottime and the second time with cumulative as
$sort.

The results are 66 seconds on Debian and 736 seconds on Gentoo.

I attach the full output to this mail.

Same results I see with every python program. To do a emerge update
takes ages just for dependency scans. (although there is no comparing
tool in Debian)

I did profiling with python 2.7 and 3.5. As 3.5 is slightly slower than
2.7, it doesn't matter to much.

Also I tried to compare the different function calls between 2.7 and
3.5, but they are the same.

So, the output I posted was in fact from 3.5 on Gentoo and 2.7 on Debian
but as the difference of 2.7 and 3.5 is just around 5% - 10% I did not
mentioned that (apology about that, I even seen my fault here after the
post).

What I can try is to do them on the same machine. On one of my systems I
saved the old debian volume so I could just chroot into the debian tree
and do the same over there.

But as the results so far are that catastrophically, I think that it
will be not that difference overall.

That slow python processing makes it also really slow when trying to
emerge --update.

Currently net-misc/electrum needs a new setting to decide between
python_targets_python3_4 or python_targets_python3_5. That for its own
is not the problem but afterwards, many packages needs to be rebuild
with the same use flag. Unfortunately it is shown one by one after every
emerge run.

With a emerge update run (just until it comes to the question about the
new use setting) of around 10 minutes, it will take my full day of
attention to update my system due to this single setting. (Not including
the compile step itself).

At least that I found. It is related to the default 3.5 python
interpreter. If I use /usr/lib/python-exec/python2.7/ansible* it updates
terminal output in a smoother way.

Any Idea how I get the same behaviour with python 3.5?

I don't know metalog but the ps snippet is about mlocate database.
mlocate is an implementation of the `locate` command and updatedb is
running find over your filesystem(s) to collect a list of all files.
Maybe it is running over mountpoints that try to automount bluetooth
devices. You can exclude such mountpoints from updatedb.

[gentoo-user] Slow python execution

2018-06-23 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

I encounter especially slow python tool execution especially with
ansible or ansible-doc that I use often.

The machine was running with debian before and the execution time was
ok, but with reinstalling it with gentoo, it is painful slow.

What I have seen is that, while debian installs the python cache files
(.pyc) right beside the original module file but gentoo installs them
into a __pycache__ subdir. But this is the only ting I found different.

Anybody an idea what causes the slowliness?

Beside that, the terminal output of ansible is buffered on gentoo so the
output is not instant. While this is a different problem, it makes
manual ansible runs even more painful over there.

[gentoo-user] Different resolutions in startup

Hi Folks,

I have something that annoys me somehow when starting the system.

Usually I set the fb resolution in grub with a proper vga command line.
The problem begins afterwards that the resolution gets changed
afterwards to a very poor resolution before asked to type the password
for disk encryption.

After that the resolution changes again to a different (but higher)
resolution. (I think, that is the final resolution set by conf.d.)

I did not find a way to change the intermediate resolution to a better
value or even find a way to prevent the resolution switch at all...

Anybody an idea how to set the resolution in grub command line and not
changing it afterwards?

Disregard (partly) my mail before.

in bash, the questionable keys work. It is only zsh where it does not
work.

After some digging, I found that zsh is not linked against readline.
Even more it wonders me why it work on other platforms.

On debian not even bash is linked against readline.

I am confused as before. :-(

That hint pointed me to what seems to be the issue.

It seems for me that neither /etc/inputrc nor ~/.inputrc are used on
gentoo.

Gentoo already has the relevant mappings in /etc/inputrc but it seems to
be not set. On debian (to have something to compare) the questionary
mappings are not set in /etc/inputrc but are set and working.

And I double checked:
   key[Delete]='^[[3~'
   key[End]='^[[F'
   key[Home]='^[[H'

and in inputrc:
   $if mode=emacs
   ...
   "\e[H": beginning-of-line
   "\e[F": end-of-line
   $endif

So, finding out why the inputrc's are not read should fix the problem.

As mentioned above in <20180520081757.gc23...@ikki.ethgen.ch> ff., that
is a generic issue with missing termcap mappings for 3 key sequences

Well, the problem seems to be no X problem than a problem of missing
termcap mappings for delete-char, beginning-of-line and end-of-line. In
fact, that seems to be the only missing mappings.

The problem occurs using X or console or ssh.

[gentoo-user] udev and ignoring rules

2018-05-20 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

I found a strange problem with udev and, in this case, pcscd.

Installed versions:
   [IP-] [  ] sys-apps/pcsc-lite-1.8.22:0
   [IP-] [  ] sys-fs/eudev-3.2.5:0
   [IP-] [  ] virtual/udev-217:0

- From /lib/udev/rules.d/99-pcscd-hotplug.rules, group should be set to
pcscd. However, if I plug the device it gets set to group usb.

That for its own is very strange as I found no error in the rule in that
file:
   ACTION=="add", ENV{PCSCD}=="1", GROUP="pcscd", RUN+="/bin/env IN_HOTPLUG=1
/etc/init.d/pcscd --quiet start"

And adding some debug rules showed that ENV{PCSCD} is really set.

However, not the first fail with udev (bevore unrelated and on debian) I
tried:
   ~> udevadm test /devices/pci:00/:00:1d.0/usb5/5-1
   ...
   Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/92-pcsc-ccid.rules
   Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/95-dm-notify.rules
   Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/97-hid2hci.rules
   Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-fuse.rules
   Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-pcscd-hotplug.rules
   ...
   GROUP 85 /lib64/udev/rules.d/40-gentoo.rules:7
   ...
   GROUP 242 /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-pcscd-hotplug.rules:6
   ...

After that the device has its correct group set to pcscd. So it seems to
be a kind of heisenbug[0], you see it as long as you don't watch on it.
:-(

Any Idea what can get wrong?

Beside the main problem I think the RUN setting is wrong. It just
produces log messages:
   pcscd: not allowed to be hotplugged

I tried to find information on IN_HOTPLUG environment but there aren't
any. And pcscd is running as daemon as described in [1].

   Klaus

[gentoo-user] Annoying mapping of some keys

2018-05-20 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

I have an annoying problem on gentoo that I work around currently by
using zkbd from zsh.

Some keys on Gentoo, on xterm, console and via ssh from remote host, map
to wrong keycodes. Namely and most important, that are the keys for
begin, end and delete. They insert a tilde char instead of doing the
expected cursor movement.

A correct table would show as following:
   key[F1]='^[OP'
   key[F2]='^[OQ'
   key[F3]='^[OR'
   key[F4]='^[OS'
   key[F5]='^[[15~'
   key[F6]='^[[17~'
   key[F7]='^[[18~'
   key[F8]='^[[19~'
   key[F9]='^[[20~'
   key[F10]='^[[21~'
   key[F11]='^[[23~'
   key[F12]='^[[24~'
   key[Backspace]='^?'
   key[Insert]='^[[2~'
   key[Home]='^[[H'
   key[PageUp]='^[[5~'
   key[Delete]='^[[3~'
   key[End]='^[[F'
   key[PageDown]='^[[6~'
   key[Up]='^[[A'
   key[Left]='^[[D'
   key[Down]='^[[B'
   key[Right]='^[[C'
   key[Menu]=

Is there any way to fix that system wide in Gentoo?

Well, the sound quality is very bad with alsa with even cracks when
moving mouse or having network traffic. Even more I have a very bad
experience with kernel panics when using alsa.

On the other hand I always had pretty good sound with oss4 and no

I just started to look into overlays. Currently I use none.

One of my main problems here is to see what the overlay is for.

Currently I use the 17.0/hardened profile only.

I have no systemd, no consolekit and no "desktopenvironment". I use fvwm

In fact, the pain with systemd on debian brought me to Gentoo. I have a
history of over 20 years with debian but the quality is speeding up to
decay since the switch to systemd was made.

Thanks, will have a look.

Is that a replacement to pulseaudio? If yes, that would be definitively
a replacement.

That was my experience on debian before too.

Well, as it does not start at all, that does not work too.

[gentoo-user] Sound and Perl modules

2018-05-18 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi folks,

I mentioned already that I am a user of OSS4. I found [0] but none of
the information over there works anymore. Do you know some more recent
source?

Currently I am trying to compile it from source directly but there is a
small problem left with kernel 4.16.

Another problem with sound is bluetooth. On one box I usually use a
bluetooth headset. Unfortunately the only way that seems to work on
linux is to use puleaudio. Sadly it is not starting under Gentoo.

Is there anyone who has successful use pulseaudio with bluetooth on
Gentoo?

The last and most exciting point, I am heavily depending on some perl
modules, One of them actually is not available on Gentoo.
(dev-perl/DBD-CSV) I want to avoid installing it in my $HOME. Is there
any description how to convert such packages into custom emerge packages
and manage them in a custom overlay?

I hope, I do not bother you with all that questions coming up moving to
Gentoo...

Regards
   Klaus

[gentoo-user] wicd and dhcpcd

2018-05-17 Thread Klaus Ethgen

Hash: SHA512

Hi,

I have another strange problem that I found today.

I use wicd on my laptop and it was working fine on debian before.

Now, when I use it on Gentoo with exact the same config, it doesn't work
in a strange way. The network (wired or wireless) is brought up and
dhcpcd start. After configuring IPv6 it stops the network interface
immediately.

When I start the network interface with net.eth0, it works. It also work
when configuring IP static.

But what I see is, that dhcpcd seems to delay IPv4 setup. I believe that
this is stopping wicd from working correct.

Needless to say that there is no usable logging I found. :-(

Thanks.

That is fine with me. I won't install pulsaudio if it would not be the
only way to use bluetooth audio. It just had the dependencie for the
default flag udev to have oss or alsa enabled. And I do not have alsa.

However if there is a better solution for bluetooth audio, I would be
happy to drop pulseaudio completely.

I believe that other applications like cmus will work fine with oss.

[gentoo-user] Gentoo and OSS(4)

2018-05-15 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi folks,

usually I have a alsa free environment (as it never worked well) and
used OSS4 for long time now (>20y).

Now with the switch to gentoo I wondering if it is possible to use oss
on gentoo too.

One of the first problems I see is:
   !!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "media-sound/pulseaudio" has unmet
requirements.
   - media-sound/pulseaudio-11.1::gentoo USE="X asyncns caps glib ipv6 ssl udev
webrtc-aec -alsa -alsa-plugin -bluetooth -dbus -doc -equalizer -gdbm -gnome
-gtk -jack -libressl -libsamplerate -lirc -native-headset (-neon)
-ofono-headset -orc (-oss) -qt4 -realtime (-selinux) -sox (-system-wide)
-systemd -tcpd -test -zeroconf" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)"

 The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
   udev? ( any-of ( alsa oss ) )

Even that I have a explicite "oss" in my USE flags, it gets deselected
by pulsaudio (which I primary include to be able to use bluetooth
headset).

So,

- - What does that -oss in brackets mean?
- - How can I force usage of oss
- - Is there a oss4 patchset for kernel and the userspace available?

 ^^
   dev-libs/libsodium:0/18 required by
(dev-python/pynacl-1.1.2:0/0::gentoo, installed)

What is the best way in gentoo to fix that?

And why is that a conflict at all? When I try to understand it, I find
that 0/18 is fine for both. So why is there a conflict?

   net.ipv6.conf.wlan0.use_tempaddr=2

all doesn't have any effect, see [0] and [1]. So, no, that is not
related to the problem.

For some reasons I have ipv6 and tg3 (my eth0) as module.

Unfortunately, the setting does not to be set. My guess is, that sysctl
runs before loading of the network modules.

Restarting sysctl service and network does work and gives me privacy
extension. But not the standard boot.

Any idea how to fix that? There must be a trustable way to set privacy
extension.

Regards
   Klaus

You might add the following line in /etc/gai.conf:
   precedence :::0:0/96  100

instead of
   precedence :::0:0/96  10

Note that you need the full precedence-block if it is commented out.
Just change that line.

Greate, there is the hint. It need sys-kernel/genkernel >= 3.5.0.7 but
only 3.4.52.4-r2 is stable on gentoo.

[gentoo-user] Gentoo VM with VNC

2018-04-27 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

another problem I encounter when I use Gentoo. ;-)

I have a VM (KVM) where I start X11 with qxl driver to use it via vnc. I
had the same setup before with Debian.

While with debian, VNC was fine, with gentoo the mouse get detected
wrong. I mean, I have mouse but the pointer is never in sync with the
mouse. It seems that it is virtual "scaled" on the way. That make it
difficult to find the right point to click and impossible to click on
buttons.

On the other side I use tigervnc that worked best in the past.

Currently I have no idea how to fix it.

Ah yes, X11 seems to be a new battle field for me in gentoo. While
~/.xsession was the way to have a custom startup in other distributions,
it is ignored in gentoo, used via startx or wdm. I found something about
~/.xprofile but that is also not used anywhere. At least with startx,
~/.xinit is used. Any common way for that?

That did the trick; even for the kernel. However, I had to compile the
kernel with integrated firmware to skip this step in genkernel as
genkernel failed with firmware compiling.

Ok, it seems to have sometimes very strange compile errors.

I just decided to start from scratch. after some steps, it failed to
compile grub. Now this grub even fail on a box where it worked before.

The strange thing is the following:
The error message is:
   Can't locate Locale/Messages.pm in @INC (you may need to install the
Locale::Messages module) (@INC contains: /usr/lib64/texinfo /usr/share/texinfo
/usr/share/texinfo /etc/perl

/usr/lib64/perl5/5.24.3 .) at /usr/bin/makeinfo line 109.

But(!):
   perl -MLocale::gettext -e 'print "$Locale::gettext::VERSION\n";'
   1.07

and:
   find /usr -name gettext.pm

/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.24.3/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/Locale/gettext.pm

Note that the same path is in @INC above.

That all is the current sync.
Grub to install would be sys-boot/grub-2.02:2/2.02::gentoo.

There seems to be something really strange going on but I do not have
any idea where to search.

Eh, no. The kernel is 4.9.76, the current stable kernel of Gentoo. The
config has the same version and *genkernel* is version 3.4.52, the
current version in Gentoo.

I even tried 4.15.* before with the same result. I wonder in this
context when and if Gentoo does bring some fixes for i686 for Spectre
and Meltdown.

[gentoo-user] Kernel compile error

Hi,

I stumbled into the next problem.

I do have a decent kernel compile knowledge but that seems to be gentoo
specific.

I have a old i686 machine where I installed gentoo on. Now when I did
the kernel the first time, it worked well. everything fine exept some
minor stuff (see below).

I even try to compile with exactly the same config that compiled some
days before but got the same error.

The installed kernel sources and genkernel are:
[IP-] [  ] sys-kernel/genkernel-3.4.52.4-r2:0
[IP-] [  ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.9.76-r1:4.9.76-r1

As the error is completely without a meaning for me, maybe others have
an Idea.

Regards
   Klaus

That did the trick.

For some Reason, I had $BINDIR set in my environment, pointing to
$HOME/bin. unsetting it made it work.

[gentoo-user] Binaries in /root/bin

2018-04-22 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi Folks,

forgive me to have the second question in several days. I just start to
get used to Gentoo. :-)

Currently I have two packages that installed somehow wrong.

1. is net-im/psi-1.3-r1
2. is app-admin/pass-1.7.1

both packages install their bin into /root/bin. All other packages are
installing correct, just that two packages did it wrong.

Any Idea what I did wrong and how to repair?

Regards

[gentoo-user] emerge colors and light background

2018-04-19 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi Folks,

I recently start with gentoo due to frustration of the rapidly degrading
quality of debian.

Currently I have pretty good feelings about gentoo but there is one
thing that is pretty annoying.

I use light background and many colors of emerge and other tools are
simple unreadable (like light green). I searched how to adapt them to my
background but did not success. I already know about color.map but this
just allows to tune some colors and not all (at least the ones that are
documented in the man page).

So, is there any way (without using --nocolor) to use color set that is
more readable?
