Unfortunately this brings me into the haskell dependency hell. For two days I am constantly adding keywords for one more package, emerging it, doing haskell-updater, doing emerge @preserved-rebuild and starting over again. It seems that no single package in thatoverlay, that is marked green is working and I have to add a keyword overwrite for them. Isn't there a way to escape the haskell dependency hell? That is apparently not the case today. Interesting thoughts. First, cpufreq-set seems to be not available on gentoo anymore. Doesn't matter, just giving it a try. It came out, that all build times have nearly the same sys times but the user and real times vary. Funny, this is a two CPU machine but the build with -j1 consumes the least user time. Just the real value gives the same pattern than on the site. Re: [gentoo-user] /boot filesystem, SSDs, TRIM
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 The question should be if and why to use /boot at all on modern systems. [gentoo-user] Slow emerge
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Hi folks, recently, I searched for a reason why emerge --update is that slow. (And in my eyes, needless slow.) I found a thread[0] on gentoo forum where I found a really helpful hint. emerge --backtrack=0 ... Would do the same job in 99% of the cases but in about 1/5 of the run time. Sadly the thread did not end in a helpful conclusion but maybe it helps to bring that to the discussion again. I even would like to have a update check in nagios for my gentoo boxes too but as it is that slow and consume that much resources, it is to costly. The results are even more sever when using the same python version on the same system. I did call `python2 -m cProfile -s $sort =ansible-doc -l` twice on both systems. Once with tottime and the second time with cumulative as $sort. The results are 66 seconds on Debian and 736 seconds on Gentoo. I attach the full output to this mail. Same results I see with every python program. To do a emerge update takes ages just for dependency scans. So, the output I posted was in fact from 3.5 on Gentoo and 2.7 on Debian but as the difference of 2.7 and 3.5 is just around 5% - 10% I did not mentioned that (apology about that, I even seen my fault here after the post). What I can try is to do them on the same machine. On one of my systems I saved the old debian volume so I could just chroot into the debian tree and do the same over there. But as the results so far are that catastrophically, I think that it will be not that difference overall. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 That slow python processing makes it also really slow when trying to emerge --update. Currently net-misc/electrum needs a new setting to decide between python_targets_python3_4 or python_targets_python3_5. That for its own is not the problem but afterwards, many packages needs to be rebuild with the same use flag. Unfortunately it is shown one by one after every emerge run. With a emerge update run (just until it comes to the question about the new use setting) of around 10 minutes, it will take my full day of attention to update my system due to this single setting. [gentoo-user] Slow python execution

The machine was running with debian before and the execution time was ok, but with reinstalling it with gentoo, it is painful slow. What I have seen is that, while debian installs the python cache files (.pyc) right beside the original module file but gentoo installs them into a __pycache__ subdir. But this is the only ting I found different. Anybody an idea what causes the slowliness? Beside that, the terminal output of ansible is buffered on gentoo so the output is not instant. [gentoo-user] udev and ignoring rules
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Hi, I found a strange problem with udev and, in this case, pcscd. Installed versions: [IP-] [ ] sys-apps/pcsc-lite-1.8.22:0 [IP-] [ ] sys-fs/eudev-3.2.5:0 [IP-] [ ] virtual/udev-217:0 - From /lib/udev/rules.d/99-pcscd-hotplug.rules, group should be set to pcscd. However, if I plug the device it gets set to group usb. That for its own is very strange as I found no error in the rule in that file: ACTION=="add", ENV{PCSCD}=="1", GROUP="pcscd", RUN+="/bin/env IN_HOTPLUG=1 /etc/init.d/pcscd --quiet start" And adding some debug rules showed that ENV{PCSCD} is really set. However, not the first fail with udev (bevore unrelated and on debian) I tried: ~> udevadm test /devices/pci:00/:00:1d.0/usb5/5-1 ... Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/92-pcsc-ccid.rules Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/95-dm-notify.rules Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/97-hid2hci.rules Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-fuse.rules Reading rules file: /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-pcscd-hotplug.rules ... GROUP 85 /lib64/udev/rules.d/40-gentoo.rules:7 ... GROUP 242 /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-pcscd-hotplug.rules:6 ... After that the device has its correct group set to pcscd. So it seems to be a kind of heisenbug[0], you see it as long as you don't watch on it. :-( Any Idea what can get wrong? Beside the main problem I think the RUN setting is wrong. It just produces log messages: pcscd: not allowed to be hotplugged I tried to find information on IN_HOTPLUG environment but there aren't any. And pcscd is running as daemon as described in [1]. [gentoo-user] Annoying mapping of some keys
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Hi, I have an annoying problem on gentoo that I work around currently by using zkbd from zsh. Some keys on Gentoo, on xterm, console and via ssh from remote host, map to wrong keycodes. Namely and most important, that are the keys for begin, end and delete. They insert a tilde char instead of doing the expected cursor movement. A correct table would show as following: key[F1]='^[OP' key[F2]='^[OQ' key[F3]='^[OR' key[F4]='^[OS' key[F5]='^[[15~' key[F6]='^[[17~' key[F7]='^[[18~' key[F8]='^[[19~' key[F9]='^[[20~' key[F10]='^[[21~' key[F11]='^[[23~' key[F12]='^[[24~' key[Backspace]='^?' key[Insert]='^[[2~' key[Home]='^[[H' key[PageUp]='^[[5~' key[Delete]='^[[3~' key[End]='^[[F' key[PageDown]='^[[6~' key[Up]='^[[A' key[Left]='^[[D' key[Down]='^[[B' key[Right]='^[[C' key[Menu]= Is there any way to fix that system wide in Gentoo? I have no systemd, no consolekit and no "desktopenvironment". I use fvwm and lived well with using pulseaudio autostart when using an application that made use of it (cmus). In fact, the pain with systemd on debian brought me to Gentoo. Now, when I use it on Gentoo with exact the same config, it doesn't work in a strange way. The network (wired or wireless) is brought up and dhcpcd start. After configuring IPv6 it stops the network interface immediately. When I start the network interface with net.eth0, it works. It also work when configuring IP static. But what I see is, that dhcpcd seems to delay IPv4 setup. I believe that this is stopping wicd from working correct. Needless to say that there is no usable logging I found. :-( Regards Klaus - -- Klaus Ethgen http://www.ethgen.ch/ pub 4096R/4E20AF1C 2011-05-16Klaus Ethgen <kl...@ethgen.ch> Fingerprint: 85D4 CA42 952C 949B 1753 62B3 79D0 B06F 4E20 AF1C -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Comment: Charset: ISO-8859-1 iQGzBAEBCgAdFiEEMWF28vh4/UMJJLQEpnwKsYAZ9qwFAlr9KnAACgkQpnwKsYAZ 9qyfLAv/dzWqW4nPcoz5Qf4oqudrrDpmfClXmMVK5J30W2LBR0u5rVvITxja+HDc /PIKm7MDK6FVljllyBKKcaOXX0wJeV8htU5sPlQ0i7z3YcRa6c+6mb8oyrzV3DTY 3qta5sFVrgw8ua/AdHrktOLLvnCd+AZqt4LkMwEpLHPBcZo1knhmsg2zbji1dOvx fq8C/jOUlM+/ZQDv2HfF3jCeqNV9B7HbTxzYHVsC0w4MmFzD9hO55aVBXZdMvuFw KXkHYLq3hZBuktSaPU5NTzuW0k9+S3Hg0uiMRXDZElU4Otsub9dyYJbv7AozIJ7c +PIhNhfZOtGwjY2YkSE661/bruKZWeAYTLKiij9kRCvN/p7dJeJDuS1SwfGeR/Mu BKIq1WgG8WmZHAPHZypjqqO6+rjIJD7cIzWnWKvtKB5e2Pd3c9Er5K5JOLgNcFMa nrkSomTxwSwiw1op6AcgWFPTVwJaZC3NzGth9oc9HPDAu9hHcVG6380mSBgqOKH9 mdh9Zc0Y =pv1i -END PGP SIGNATURE-

Re: [gentoo-user] Strange compile errors
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Ok, it seems to have sometimes very strange compile errors. I just decided to start from scratch. after some steps, it failed to compile grub. Now this grub even fail on a box where it worked before. The strange thing is the following: The error message is: Can't locate Locale/Messages.pm in @INC (you may need to install the Locale::Messages module) (@INC contains: /usr/lib64/texinfo /usr/share/texinfo /usr/share/texinfo /etc/perl /usr/local/lib64/perl5/5.24.3/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/local/lib64/perl5/5.24.3 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.24.3/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.24.3 /usr/local/lib64/perl5 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5/5.24.3/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib64/perl5/5.24.3 .) at /usr/bin/makeinfo line 109. But(!): perl -MLocale::gettext -e 'print "$Locale::gettext::VERSION\n";' 1.07 and: find /usr -name gettext.pm /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.24.3/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/Locale/gettext.pm Note that the same path is in @INC above. That all is the current sync. Grub to install would be sys-boot/grub-2.02:2/2.02::gentoo. There seems to be something really strange going on but I do not have any idea where to search. Eh, no. The kernel is 4.9.76, the current stable kernel of Gentoo. The config has the same version and *genkernel* is version 3.4.52, the current version in Gentoo. I even tried 4.15.* before with the same result. I wonder in this context when and if Gentoo does bring some fixes for i686 for Spectre and Meltdown. [gentoo-user] emerge colors and light background
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Hi Folks, I recently start with gentoo due to frustration of the rapidly degrading quality of debian. Currently I have pretty good feelings about gentoo but there is one thing that is pretty annoying. I use light background and many colors of emerge and other tools are simple unreadable (like light green). I searched how to adapt them to my background but did not success. I already know about color.map but this just allows to tune some colors and not all (at least the ones that are documented in the man page).
