First question should be, can this be done?
I had 2 Nvidia videos cards, running 2 monitors, with X spanning both
monitors.
One card died and I replaced it with a Radeon video card. Can I still
span X across the two monitors? Does the make/model of the cards matter
at all?
If the answer
Yes, that was the correct answer. Added net.ifnames=0 to GRUB and
everything is happy. Much thanks for your responses. I am always
grateful for the collective wisdom of this list.

Hello,
I was wondering whether there is some way to find out the current
running softlevel (which I gave to the kernel line in grub's
menu.lst), for example to start another window manager depending on
the softlevel or whatever other possible solutions? Maybe in a
variable like $SOFTLEVEL ?
At least you can get the complete kernel line from /proc/cmdline.
Strangely, my /proc/cmdline is empty; could I have forgotten some
kernel module or option?
If you like, put something like this into your .bashrc:
# get boot parameters:
SOFTLEVEL=$( /proc/cmdline )
# strip from left all

Hi,
I am using gentoo since one month. Today I tried an emerge --update system
after an emerge --sync.
However, I got an error emerging util-linux.
I am using a custom compiled vanilla kernel from kernel.org. uname -a says:

I had to move my linux partition from /dev/hda3 to /dev/hda1
I have altered /etc/fstab to reflect the move, along with /boot/grub/menu.lst
yet everytime I boot I still get the following error.
The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device or shell
root (hd0,0) (Specify where your /boot partition resides)
grub setup (hd0) (Install GRUB in the MBR)
grub quit (Exit the GRUB shell)
