The problem you're facing is that you masked dev-lang/perl, but not any
virtual/perl-* or perl-core/-* to compensate.

These 3 components work in concert like a single component, as a sort
of bodge to compensate for the fact portage has no working "provides" feature,
and to compensate for the dependency-system missmatch between how
Gentoo works and how CPAN works.

Theres' no easy way of fixing this atm, but the short of it is if you're using
an ~arch dev-lang/perl, you should be using an ~arch virtual/perl-*,
and if you're using an "arch" dev-lang/perl, you should be using only
"arch" versions of virtual/perl-*

Once you do this, portage may still scream at you, because portage is
very much optimised for upgrading, and it tends to think downgrading is
an error.

So once you get all your masks/keyword changes in place, you should do:

  emerge -C virtual/perl-*
  emerge -C perl-core/*

(or something to that effect)

This looks scary, but generally isn't, because you're not actually removing
anything with this, just juggling a few balls and making only older
versions of certain things available ( as they're alls shipped in
dev-lang/perl )

And then after you do this, portage is more likely to be persuadable
into doing the right thing.

You can additionally abuse my tool, gentoo-perl-helpers for doing some of this,
and some of the steps I've described are automated because they're just
that safe and useful.

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Perl#app-admin.2Fgentoo-perl-helpers

After putting the right masks in place, do:

gentoo-perl gen-upgrade-sets 5.26 5.24

And if you're really lucky, the sets it generates will work the first time :)

( I actually tested this scenario when developing it, but its still an
undocumented use on purpose )

GLHF.

google-chrome is the binary package, it shouldn't be a problem.

That's the trouble with binary packages, you can't turn off dependencies
with USE flags, but most of that stuff is fairly small, much of it is
perl modules.

I went ahead and did the upgrade which worked, but the emerge from
perl-cleaner --all did not. I am using ~amd64 and have done so for
years, so I don't think I need to maks off anything. I seem now to be
stuck with dev-python/setuptools, so I am now trying to figure out why
I can't emerge that -- it was triggered by the perl-cleaner --all .

OK, so I am doing the usual update of world and portage figured out
about hundreds of perl modules and even thepython setuptools, so I
will do that and then think about doing the -e world, but I may wait
awhile on that -- this one will take at least 48 hours.

My tree maybe 30 days old or thereabouts. I could not run the emerge
from perl-cleaner because of setup-tools problems. I will see what
happens if I run a regular update, but I hate to do that if I am going

How recent is your tree?

I had issues with setuptools doing the first run through the 17.0
upgrade. I never looked into it too closely, I used --keep-going, but
setuptools seemed to think I had a useable python-3.4

After the first run through emerge -e world, nuking-python-3.4 and
re-syncing, setuptols worked normally again.

YMMV of course where you are

[gentoo-user] Udev and eudev clash. Something wants to remove eudev and install udev.

2019-10-27 Thread Dale
Howdy,

I'm trying to do my weekly update.  I use eudev but something seems to
want plain udev and to remove eudev while at it.  I have udev masked so
emerge knows not to install it.  This is what emerge spits out with the
-t option in use.  Keep in mind, some options are in make.conf but the
output should show the needed results.

root@fireball / # emerge -uvaDN world -t

So, I have not been able to figure this out, it did not abort and
wants to install the masked package, so hear is the whole output ---

[gentoo-user] emerge -DuN @system vs. emerge -DuN @world

2022-03-21 Thread hitachi303

Hi,

as far as I understand updating @system first should be safer and easier
to perform than updating @world directly. It was mention that especially
after updating the software after a somewhat long period this might
solve conflicts. I often do experience different and wonder what the
reason might be.

The example today would work in both ways but @system shows problems
which @world does not have. Mostly those problems seem to be bigger to
the point where @system does not work but @world does or manual package
by package uninstalling and or emerging is required.

Normally I run emerge -Dua --reinstall changed-use @world but N fits
better in the subject line.

Anyway just an observation.

Regards

[gentoo-user] update fails, but I don't see why

2020-12-03 Thread n952162

I'm trying to update the gentoo system that I last updated 6 weeks ago,
but it seems not to work.  Can somebody explain to me why?

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies
 * IMPORTANT: 9 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

 Thanks for all your suggestions...

I will look into fail2ban... that might be what I need... While I could
crank BLOCKING_PERIOD for blacklist.py to an absurdly high value, this
(AFAIK) will not persist blocks when the server is powered down or rebooted.

Hum, that is interesting. I haven't played with blacklist.py, but if
it runs on top of iptables, the iptables init script *should* save the
current config when powering down. I sort of depended on that when I
cobbled together a perl script 2 years ago to parse the sshd log and
ban sites using iptables.

Also, I would not suggest banning forever. I started with the same
mentality as you and coded as such. I switched quickly to banning for
1 hour when once, due to not noticing the caps-lock light, I banned my
work computer completely... After switching to the 1 hour ban, I did a
small experiment and saved about 2 months worth of logs. Not a single
ip address has been banned more than once (but there were several /24
in Korea, Taiwan, and Mexico that have many ip addresses banned).
Based on this, I don't think it is strictly necessary to ban forever.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks everybody for your help. I've made the further suggested

Can you provide the emerge output of the following command?

 emerge --tree --unordered-diplay -uDNv @world

This makes it more clear what pulls in systemd.

 Once you know that, you can mask the chain and use an alternative;
other than that, MATE is in the Portage tree and therefore you can
remove the MATE overlay to avoid running into unnecessary blockers.

This happening has nothing to do with Gentoo or systemd; around four
years ago the development of pm-utils stopped, which causes UPower to
nowadays take a decision. This results in the following scenarios:

  1. If you need pm-utils, you either need to switch to the
  upower-pm-utils fork or to systemd;

  2. If you don't need pm-utils, you either need to

 a) upgrade to upower-0.99 once reverse dependencies support it
 and it is stabilized (this has no dependency on systemd);

 b) switch to upower-pm-utils despite not needing pm-utils;

 c) switch to systemd.

Gentoo reflects that decision as magic can't happen from one day to
the other; while trying to keep a fork upower-pm-utils alive as long as
it can be kept working given the manpower, kernel API and so on...

Here's the output you requested, Tom:

Sorry, but this isn't just a MATE overlay problem. Once I made your
suggested changes, the MATE mask change requests disappeared. What I
did get was XFCE mask requirements:

 [snip]

The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
(see package.unmask in the portage(5) man page for more details)
 # required by xfce-base/xfce4-meta-4.10
 # required by @selected
 # required by @world (argument)
 # /etc/portage/package.mask:
 # problems with systemd, upower shift to upower.pm.utils
 =xfce-base/xfce4-session-4.10.1-r1
 # required by virtual/udev-208-r2
 # required by sys-power/upower-0.9.23-r3
 # required by xfce-base/xfce4-session-4.10.1-r1[udev]
 # required by xfce-base/xfce4-meta-4.10
 # required by @selected
 # required by @world (argument)
 # /etc/portage/package.mask:
 # problems with systemd, upower shift to upower.pm.utils
 =sys-apps/systemd-212-r5
 # required by sys-apps/systemd-212-r5[-vanilla]
 # required by sys-power/upower-0.9.23-r3
 # required by xfce-base/xfce4-session-4.10.1-r1[udev]
 # required by xfce-base/xfce4-meta-4.10
 # required by @selected
 # required by @world (argument)
 # /etc/portage/package.mask:
 # problems with systemd, upower shift to upower.pm.utils
 =sys-apps/gentoo-systemd-integration-4

 [snip]

I had already emerge - C'd those two XFCE applications because, early
in this process an equery depends upower had shown them to be
dependent upon upower even after emerging upower-pm-utils. I have
no confidence at this point that my particular problem is reasonably
solvable, as I have been caught in this circle for three days now.

There is no need to mask any Xfce packages, in fact, masking them would
 cause more blockers.
So that output would be bogus, as it would include the wrong Xfce masks,
and futhermore it's only end of
the output, so it wouldn't tell the necessary information required for
 solving it anyway.
Remove anykind of Xfce masks and post complete output, and don't forget
to use the --tree flag (-t) to see
 what is pulling in what.
That is, if you still want help solving the issue.

 - Samuli

I I've removed the XFCE masks. Note that mate-power-manager is masked.
 Here's the output without them:

dutch@gentoo ~ $ emerge --tree --unordered-display --pretend -uDNv @world

[gentoo-user] The return of the dreaded "Cannot run C compiled programs"

2018-03-26 Thread Peter Humphrey
I have a four-core 64-bit Celeron box with 4GB RAM, on which I've just
installed a standard XFCE system on the desktop profile. It all went as
expected, but when I ran an emerge -e world at the end I had two failures:
both glibc and sandbox failed with the error in the subject line.

It's some years since I last saw this error, and I'm stuck. I've looked
through /etc hoping to find something skew-whiff, and I've compared the
environment with this box's, but nothing stands out.

Finally, following the hint in the portage output, I ran "FEATURES='-sandbox -
usersandbox' emerge -1 --color n sandbox". It made no discernible difference.

I've attached the logs etc from sandbox.

Has anyone a clue?

Regards.

[gentoo-user] dev-scheme/guile fails to build after update: "cannot find -lguile" linker error

2018-03-31 Thread Bryant Morrow
--

I recently updated my system, which broke... well, everything. I was able to
boot, but my init system failed
due to errors creating pipes and no services were launched (I use s6 for my
init). After the update,
some preserved libraries failed to be rebuilt by emerge @preserved-rebuild,
namely dev-scheme/guile.
The original update was done after adding amd64 and ~amd64 to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS
due to difficulties
with various packages.

I cloned the updated system into a separate subvolume, then reverted the
original to a backup from
before the update. I tried various things to fix the issue from chroot,
including switching to the 17.0
default/hardened profile (#14) from my previous hardened (stable) profile.

I don't know how much (if anything) the broken guile lib has to do with the
broken system, but I
can't get any farther until I've sorted this out.

Attached are the relevant logs and debugging outputs.

[gentoo-user] Error while `emerge grub`

2011-06-08 Thread Pandu Poluan
Okay, what's going on here...

While `emerge grub` I got configure: error: unsupported CPU type

Here's /var/tmp/portage/sys-boot/grub-0.97-r10/work/grub-0.97/config.log :

running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by GRUB configure 0.97, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.65. Invocation command line was

Yeah, you used pastebin and other ephemeral hosting sites.

Don't do that here, just snip out the *relevant* bits of the logs and post
them in the body of the mail. Without that, your odds of getting good replies
 here are somewhat reduced.

Pastebin links also expire, which is not good for archival purposes.

Okay, sorry. A habit I acquired in another mailing list which do not
want in-line paste.

[gentoo-user] problem emerging util-linux

2010-02-27 Thread linux
Hi,

I am using gentoo since one month. Today I tried an emerge --update system
after an emerge --sync.
However, I got an error emerging util-linux.

I am using a custom compiled vanilla kernel from kernel.org. uname -a says:

Here is the output of

[gentoo-user] Problems compiling clozurecl on ARMboard (Arietta G25)

2015-06-05 Thread Meino . Cramer
Hi,

while searching for good Common Lisp implementation for being
used on my small ARM board (Arietta G5 www.acmesystems.it/arietta)
I got the hint to try clozurecl -- and it is in Gentoo.

Unfortunately it does not compile:

[gentoo-user] handbrake fails to compile

2020-05-24 Thread tuxic
Hi,

media-video/handbrake-1.3.2:0/0::gentoo fails to compile (I am on
"unstable").

Searching online I found, that running perl-cleaner would fix that
problem which I done:

perl-cleaner --all

 - but without success.

Message was:

 * ERROR: media-video/handbrake-1.3.2::gentoo failed (compile phase):
 *   emake failed

I attached the build.log. If any further information are added I will
be happy to post them.

How can I fix that?

Cheers!
Meino
