The problem you're facing is that you masked dev-lang/perl, but not any virtual/perl-* or perl-core/-* to compensate. These 3 components work in concert like a single component, as a sort of bodge to compensate for the fact portage has no working "provides" feature, and to compensate for the dependency-system missmatch between how Gentoo works and how CPAN works. Theres' no easy way of fixing this atm, but the short of it is if you're using an ~arch dev-lang/perl, you should be using an ~arch virtual/perl-*, and if you're using an "arch" dev-lang/perl, you should be using only "arch" versions of virtual/perl-* Once you do this, portage may still scream at you, because portage is very much optimised for upgrading, and it tends to think downgrading is an error. So once you get all your masks/keyword changes in place, you should do: emerge -C virtual/perl-* emerge -C perl-core/* (or something to that effect) This looks scary, but generally isn't, because you're not actually removing anything with this, just juggling a few balls and making only older versions of certain things available ( as they're alls shipped in dev-lang/perl ) And then after you do this, portage is more likely to be persuadable into doing the right thing. You can additionally abuse my tool, gentoo-perl-helpers for doing some of this, and some of the steps I've described are automated because they're just that safe and useful. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Perl#app-admin.2Fgentoo-perl-helpers After putting the right masks in place, do: gentoo-perl gen-upgrade-sets 5.26 5.24 And if you're really lucky, the sets it generates will work the first time :) ( I actually tested this scenario when developing it, but its still an undocumented use on purpose ) GLHF. pgp7qA19Q_4VT.pgp Description: OpenPGP digital signature

I haven't played with blacklist.py, but if it runs on top of iptables, the iptables init script *should* save the current config when powering down. I sort of depended on that when I cobbled together a perl script 2 years ago to parse the sshd log and ban sites using iptables. Also, I would not suggest banning forever. I started with the same mentality as you and coded as such. I switched quickly to banning for 1 hour when once, due to not noticing the caps-lock light, I banned my work computer completely... After switching to the 1 hour ban, I did a small experiment and saved about 2 months worth of logs. Not a single ip address has been banned more than once (but there were several /24 in Korea, Taiwan, and Mexico that have many ip addresses banned). Based on this, I don't think it is strictly necessary to ban forever. Just my 2 cents. W -- Santa's helpers are subordinate clauses. Howdy, I'm trying to do my weekly update. I use eudev but something seems to want plain udev and to remove eudev while at it. I have udev masked so emerge knows not to install it. This is what emerge spits out with the -t option in use. Keep in mind, some options are in make.conf but the output should show the needed results. root@fireball / # emerge -uvaDN world -t These are the packages that would be merged: Calculating dependencies... done! [gentoo-user] emerge -DuN @system vs. emerge -DuN @world
Hi, as far as I understand updating @system first should be safer and easier to perform than updating @world directly. It was mention that especially after updating the software after a somewhat long period this might solve conflicts. I often do experience different and wonder what the reason might be. The example today would work in both ways but @system shows problems which @world does not have. Mostly those problems seem to be bigger to the point where @system does not work but @world does or manual package by package uninstalling and or emerging is required. Normally I run emerge -Dua --reinstall changed-use @world but N fits better in the subject line. Anyway just an observation. Regards emerge -DupN @system These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies ... done! [gentoo-user] The return of the dreaded "Cannot run C compiled programs"
I have a four-core 64-bit Celeron box with 4GB RAM, on which I've just installed a standard XFCE system on the desktop profile. It all went as expected, but when I ran an emerge -e world at the end I had two failures: both glibc and sandbox failed with the error in the subject line. It's some years since I last saw this error, and I'm stuck. I've looked through /etc hoping to find something skew-whiff, and I've compared the environment with this box's, but nothing stands out. Finally, following the hint in the portage output, I ran "FEATURES='-sandbox - usersandbox' emerge -1 --color n sandbox". It made no discernible difference. I've attached the logs etc from sandbox. [gentoo-user] dev-scheme/guile fails to build after update: "cannot find -lguile" linker error
-- I recently updated my system, which broke... well, everything. I was able to boot, but my init system failed due to errors creating pipes and no services were launched (I use s6 for my init). After the update, some preserved libraries failed to be rebuilt by emerge @preserved-rebuild, namely dev-scheme/guile. The original update was done after adding amd64 and ~amd64 to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS due to difficulties with various packages. I cloned the updated system into a separate subvolume, then reverted the original to a backup from before the update. I tried various things to fix the issue from chroot, including switching to the 17.0 default/hardened profile (#14) from my previous hardened (stable) profile. I don't know how much (if anything) the broken guile lib has to do with the broken system, but I can't get any farther until I've sorted this out. Attached are the relevant logs and debugging outputs. [gentoo-user] problem emerging util-linux
Hi, I am using gentoo since one month. Today I tried an emerge --update system after an emerge --sync. However, I got an error emerging util-linux. [gentoo-user] Problems compiling clozurecl on ARMboard (Arietta G25)
Hi, while searching for good Common Lisp implementation for being used on my small ARM board (Arietta G5 www.acmesystems.it/arietta) I got the hint to try clozurecl -- and it is in Gentoo. Unfortunately it does not compile: >>> Emerging (3 of 3) dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo >>> cfg-update-1.8.2-r1: Creating checksum index... >>> Unpacking source... >>> Source unpacked in /var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/work * ERROR: dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo failed (prepare phase): * The source directory '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/work/ccl' doesn't exist * * Call stack: *ebuild.sh, line 757: Called __ebuild_main 'prepare' * phase-functions.sh, line 975: Called __dyn_prepare * phase-functions.sh, line 369: Called die * The specific snippet of code: * die "The source directory '${S}' doesn't exist" * * If you need support, post the output of `emerge --info '=dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo'`, * the complete build log and the output of `emerge -pqv '=dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo'`. * The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/temp/build.log'. * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/temp/environment'. * Working directory: '/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages' * S: '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/work/ccl' >>> Failed to emerge dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10, Log file: >>> '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/temp/build.log' * Messages for package dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10: * ERROR: dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo failed (prepare phase): * The source directory '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/work/ccl' doesn't exist * * Call stack: *ebuild.sh, line 757: Called __ebuild_main 'prepare' * phase-functions.sh, line 975: Called __dyn_prepare * phase-functions.sh, line 369: Called die * The specific snippet of code: * die "The source directory '${S}' doesn't exist" * * If you need support, post the output of `emerge --info '=dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo'`, * the complete build log and the output of `emerge -pqv '=dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo'`. * The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/temp/build.log'. * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/temp/environment'. * Working directory: '/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages' * S: '/var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10/work/ccl' * GNU info directory index is up-to-date. === emerge --info '=dev-lisp/clozurecl-1.10::gentoo === Portage 2.2.18 (python 2.7.9-final-0, default/linux/arm/13.0/armv5te, gcc-4.8.4, glibc-2.20-r2, 4.0.4- = System Settings ===== System uname: Linux-4.0.4-20150520.001-armv5tejl-with-gentoo-2.2 KiB Mem: 253388 total, 59872 free KiB Swap: 524284 total,524284 free Timestamp of repository gentoo: Wed, 03 Jun 2015 16:45:01 + sh bash 4.3_p33-r2 ld GNU ld (Gentoo 2.24 p1.4) 2.24 app-shells/bash: 4.3_p33-r2::gentoo dev-lang/perl: 5.20.2::gentoo dev-lang/python: 2.7.9-r1::gentoo, 3.3.5-r1::gentoo dev-util/cmake: 2.8.12.2-r1::gentoo dev-util/pkgconfig: 0.28-r2::gentoo sys-apps/baselayout: 2.2::gentoo sys-apps/openrc: 0.13.11::gentoo sys-apps/sandbox: 2.6-r1::gentoo sys-devel/autoconf: 2.69::gentoo sys-devel/automake: 1.11.6-r1::gentoo, 1.14.1::gentoo sys-devel/binutils: 2.24-r3::gentoo sys-devel/gcc:4.8.4::gentoo sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.7.3::gentoo sys-devel/libtool: 2.4.6::gentoo sys-devel/make: 4.1-r1::gentoo sys-kernel/linux-headers: 3.18::gentoo (virtual/os-headers) sys-libs/glibc: 2.20-r2::gentoo Repositories: gentoo location: /usr/portage sync-type: rsync sync-uri: rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage priority: -1000 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="arm" ACCEPT_LICENSE="* -@EULA" CBUILD="armv5tel-softfloat-linux-gnueabi" CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -march=armv5te" CHOST="armv5tel-softfloat-linux-gnueabi" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/gnupg/qualified.txt" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -march=armv5te" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FCFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -march=armv5te" FEATURES="assume-digests binpkg-logs config-protect
