[gentoo-user] ATI-drivers 12.3 with Kernel 3.4

2012-04-16 Thread Helmut Jarausch

Hi,

does anybody know about patches for the ATI-drivers 12.3 to work with
git-sources 3.4_rc3 ?

Many thanks for a hint,
Helmut.

[gentoo-user] ati-drivers for xorg-server-11.0 ?

2011-08-27 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi,

does anybody know about an ati-driver for the new xorg-server-11.0
system. Is there an experimental drivers as it used to be.

Many thanks,
Helmut.

I can't answer that (as far as I know the devs will only say that it
will appear when it is ready) but I got myself into a pickle with
trying to switch from radeon to fglrx driver, running xorg-server
 1.7.6.

I think you have to wait for ati-drivers-10.4 to work with xorg-1.7.

It kept going around in circles with blockers and after
subsequent masking and unmasking I couldn't get it to emerge, so I
went back to the radeon driver. Mind you I did not rebuilt the kernel
at the time and that may be why I was getting 'you can't have these
packages installed at the same time' type of message.

With the radeon driver, I only got a blank screen, so I am using ati-
drivers. From kernel 2.6.31 on, they are sort of working fine, with GLX
and all that. Here is what I had to mask to keep the older x.org 1.6:

=x11-apps/xinput-1.5.0
=x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7
=x11-base/xorg-server-1.7
=x11-libs/libX11-1.3.2
=x11-libs/libXScrnSaver-1.2.0
=x11-libs/libXext-1.1.1
=x11-libs/libXi-1.3
=x11-libs/libXinerama-1.1
=x11-libs/libXtst-1.1.0
=x11-libs/libXxf86dga-1.1.1
=x11-libs/libXxf86vm-1.1.0
=x11-proto/bigreqsproto-1.1.0
=x11-proto/fixesproto-4.1.1
=x11-proto/inputproto-2.0
=x11-proto/recordproto-1.14
=x11-proto/scrnsaverproto-1.2.0
=x11-proto/xcmiscproto-1.2.0
=x11-proto/xextproto-7.1.1
=x11-proto/xf86bigfontproto-1.2.0
=x11-proto/xf86dgaproto-2.1
=x11-proto/xf86driproto-2.1.0
=x11-proto/xf86vidmodeproto-2.3
=x11-proto/xineramaproto-1.2
=media-libs/mesa-7.6

I only wanted to try fglrx, because someone on the Ubuntu forums said
that it stopped their laptop fan from running all the time (mine
starts when the temperature reaches 50C or so and thereafter runs
 continuously).

That's what I heard, too. Still, I have high CPU loads for the X process
when running KDE4 with my Radeon 4200 GPU.

I just want to report back, that xorg-server-1.7.6 (+ friends) is running

The only minor problem was that one has to re-emerge all other installed

[gentoo-user] ATI-drivers versioning system - I'm confused

2010-03-25 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi,

would anybody please to kind to explain the x11-drivers/ati-driver
versioning system to me? I'm waiting for a version that supports
Xorg-7.x .

From the bug report
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290739
it looks like version 8.721 supports Xorg-7.x
and would thus be more recent than say 10.2

What's the difference between the 8.x and the 10.x
series?

Many thanks for a hint,
Helmut.

Reemerge you kernel ebuild and do a make oldconfig to be sure.

2. Which ATI graphics cards can use this driver?

The ATI Proprietary Linux driver currently supports RADEON 8500 and later,

Drivers for earlier products should already be available from the DRI Project

on the AMD homepage.

Don't worry, your card is supported by catalyst 9.10, will be supported by
9.11 and probably be supported by 9.12

Just use the ati-drivers package - and patch xorg so it won't suck in 2d.

So then pick the version that you DO have that's closest.

Because obviously the instructions are telling you to install a very recent
unstable version, and you equally obvious do not have that anymore as things
have changed since the instructions were written.

Because obviously the instructions are telling you to install a very recent

the problem is he is unpacking in the wrong directory.

You didn't answer his question.

Tip: There's big capital letters in it.

Another tip: If we wrote code the way you answered questions in this thread,
the code would never run. You have to answer questions with facts around here
if you want help.

I'm no ATI expert (at all - haven't used an ATI card since the 9700 days),
but the above dmesg line would indicate that the GPU itself hung - maybe a
BIOS/FW update (since this GPU is integrated on the MB) would be a good idea
to try? It still, of course, could be a driver issue - if the driver is
sending bad commands and getting the GPU into an invalid state, this could
happen, but my first thought would be that it is a FW or HW issue...

Is there any fix already?

Many thanks,

Apparently not. The conflict lies in the ati drivers and you will have to wait
for ATI to support xorg-1.7 before upgrading.

There's a bug on b.g.o. which I read last night that has more info. Search
for xorg-server, it's near the end of the list (clearly marked)

There's a thread in the forum as well. Searching for fglrx it's the first
one right now, though it's titled towards nvidia. But just look inside.
there are instructions on how to revert back. However, the following rule
always holds true if you are using fglrx (and to some extent, the nvidia
driver): before updating your system, check if there's any important update
for X, and if so, please, always triple check in the forum and the web that
the new X release is supported by your drivers.

At least for fglrx, this is almost never true so the regular procedure is
to mask the packages that are about to be updated, and check again when a
new ati-drivers revision is in place.

Well, it's truly not for the newbie, but it's not complicated either.
After all, you are using ~arch, so.

The nvidia drivers sensibly block the latest xorg-server.

That's what blockers are for: they prevent incompatible packages from

ati-drivers don't need kernel dri for 3d acceleration. Just emerge the
drivers, set up xorg.conf to load it - or run aticonfig --initial, eselect
opengl set ati and you are done.

Pretty much as described as in the guide.

[gentoo-user] ati-drivers to radeon

2009-09-21 Thread James
Hello,

Currently, on an old laptop I have this chip:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc
Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

using ati-drivers, all if fine with:

 xorg-server-1.5.3-r5

 ati-drivers-8.593

 xorg-x11-7.4

 linux - linux-2.6.28-gentoo-r5/

I want to convert to the open-source radeon driver

I'm not finding instruction docs (except very old) so here's
what I have found to do.

edit /etc/make.conf:

VIDEO_CARDS=radeon vesa
(I keep vesa for a backup)

emerge -C ati-drivers

run 'qlist -I -C x11-drivers/'

and rebuild the list of supporting drivers?
reboot

??? that simple or did I miss something?

It seems like there use to be a conversion guide,
but, no luck finding that doc. Once I get the radeon
driver working, I was then going to update X. However,
since I'm keeping this system on kde 3.5.x, until
kde4 is stable (at least on this laptop),
or should I wait on upgrading X?

comments are welcome

James

Try ati-drivers-8.660. It's ati-drivers-9.10-alpha in disguise. Ubuntu
got ATI to give them some working drivers for Karmic. Scarabeus then put
them in the tree, but used the old versioning scheme to distinguish

Ugh, that's quite disturbing. All these version scheme dances are
anything but practical. If there's no new release we should be using
9.8-r1 or whatever fits, just like in any other package.

Otherwise, when .31 hits the tree we are going to need to mask
ati-drivers and unmask that concrete version.

1. This is a fresh install from 2008.0 with no previous drivers.
2. How can i get access to fix this in Portage? (Since that's the
underlying issue).
3. Do we know who maintains this (ATI has a member but are they on this
list?).

[gentoo-user] ati-drivers won't compile

2008-12-07 Thread Daniel D Jones
I can't get ati-drivers to compile. I'll post the entire output at the bottom
of the message but the error seems to be:

There have been known issues with this compiling with newer kernels but all of
the bug reports I've found indicated that the bug has been fixed in the
masked packages and the bug reports closed. I've unmasked 8.542 with no
change. I'm running a custom compiled 2.6.27 kernel but I've tried going
with gentoo-sources 2.6.26-r3 and r4.

Regardless of which version of the package I try to install or which kernel

One possibility is a stray library: root and users by default have
different paths and path orders? Have you tried running the apps from a
console to see if there are any errors?

Try running ldd against one of the smaller applications, and then again
against each of the libraries listed. Its tedious, hence the suggestion
to use a small test. look for missing libraries (they show as not

Re: [gentoo-user] ati-drivers slowly working through issues

2008-01-31 Thread Iain Buchanan
\o/ woot \o/

thy fglrx woes have been fix-ed!

for the curious reading now or later, I had to do quite a strange
process. Due I think to upgrading kernels, ati-drivers, and all-sorts
of things I had to delete some stuff manually:

 1. uninstall ati-drivers
 2. troll around the filesystem and delete anything with fglrx in
the name! There was lots of stuff
in /usr/lib, /usr/share, /etc, etc! Also
deleted /lib/modules/.../fglrx.ko
 3. delete some broken lib links (that were pointing
to /someting/ati/something which no longer existed). These
included:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
/usr/lib/libGL.so
 4. ran `sudo eselect opengl set xorg-x11` which now worked
(wouldn't before)
 5. reconfigure X for the kernel's radeon driver. restart X. DRI
wasn't working with the kernel radeon driver, so I had to
recompile the kernel, add drm, radeon, install, reboot a couple
of times
 6. once glxinfo reported direct rendering, I then re-installed
ati-drivers
 7. reconfigure X with fglrx module instead of radeon
 8. run `sudo eselect opengl set ati`, restart X and voila!

Who would have thought it was so simple!

at last, I get some decent frame rates with the new driver. All my
screensavers work (no SHM issues as I was having before) no segfaults.
Aaaahhh, sweet. Let's hope it doesn't all change too soon!

thanks everyone for the tips,

[gentoo-user] ati-drivers slowly working through issues

2008-01-30 Thread Iain Buchanan
Hi again all those who are stuck with (or have chosen) ati cards :)

I'm slowly getting through issues with (8-452 or 8-01): I can now
suspend and resume back into X without problems. (Time will tell how
reliable it is). I've also got my uvesa fb working since moving to
2.6.23.

However, I still can't find any solution for my GL issues. As per a
previous thread, glxgears, fgl_glxgears, and screensavers segfault when
I run them.

I'm in the video group; xorg.conf has the DRI section (mode 0666); I've
recently recompiled the kernel, ati-drivers, x11-drm, etc... what else?

Please help! thanks ;)

[gentoo-user] ati-drivers 8.452.1

2008-01-24 Thread Iain Buchanan
or 8-01 as the package is called... Has anyone tried them yet?

With a bit of tweaking the previous ebuild, I managed to install them.
So far they're no worse than 8.40.4 (8.443.1 is unusable for me because
I have a 1680x1050 resolution which the driver doesn't support!), but
they're not as good as the glory days of 8.3?.? where I had much greater
fps and GL screensavers actually worked.

Anyway, I'm seeing this when I run glxgears:
Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0.

And this when I run fgl_glxgears:
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0.
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)

There are a few X errors too:

so I'm having a few issues. Of course, 3D performance is horrible.
I've tried searching various forums, but I can't find anything that
fixes the dri error. I've checked xorg.conf has Load dri and

and also `eselect opengl set ati` has been done.

any help would greatly appreciated! thanks!

Re: [gentoo-user] ati-drivers

2007-09-02 Thread Mark Knecht
You need to discover with lspci what ATI controller is in the machine
and then check which ati-drivers packages support it. After doing that
you need to make sure that the ati-drivers package you have chosen
matches up with the kernel you are attempting to build/install.

Basic lesson: Not all ati-driver packages work with all kernels. They
come in matched sets over ranges. I don't know of a good single source
for the information but the folks on the Phoronix forums have been
very helpful to me.

Hope this helps,
Mark

[gentoo-user] ati-drivers text corruption problem.

2007-06-14 Thread Grant Edwards
All of the recent ati-drivers seem to have a bug that corrupts
contents of some scrolling text windows. It looks like this:

  http://www.visi.com/~grante/fglrxbug.png

Has anybody else seen this issue or know what to do about it?

Older versions of the driver that didn't have that bug won't
build for recent kernels and/or run under xorg 7.2.

The Xorg radeon driver doesn't have this problem, but DRI
support in that driver doesn't work for some of the programs I
run.
