Well, the obvious starting point probably is

Do you intend to have "virtual" VNC desktops, or do you want to be able to
use the "physical" display?
Arch also has a nice description of the differences and things to
configure: <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TigerVNC>

[gentoo-user] QEMU setup questions

2013-07-24 Thread Walter Dnes
  So I emerged QEMU, which pulled in some dependancies. Things are not
going well...

1) The following warning shows up in elog...

  I don't see any USE flags about this.

2) I download a Gentoo install ISO, and create a 7 gig raw file sda.raw,
and start qemu-kvm

$ qemu-kvm -hda sda.raw -cdrom installx86.iso -boot d
Could not access KVM kernel module: Permission denied
failed to initialize KVM: Permission denied

but... but... but... I am a member of group "kvm".

3) su to root and retry to start QEMU

# qemu-kvm -hda sda.raw -cdrom installx86.iso -boot d
qemu-system-x86_64: pci_add_option_rom: failed to find romfile "pxe-e1000.rom"
VNC server running on `127.0.0.1:5900'

So root has sufficient permission, but there's a problem with the BIOS,
possibly related to item 1) above

Note; I can run as regular user, either of the 2 commands...
$ qemu-system-i386 -hda sda.raw -cdrom installx86.iso -boot d
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -hda sda.raw -cdrom installx86.iso -boot d
This doesn't run into permission problem 2), but still runs into the
rom not found problem 3).

4) At least VNC is running. I emerged tigervnc and tried it

$ vncviewer

See http://www.tigervnc.org for information on TigerVNC.
X_ChangeGC: BadFont (invalid Font parameter) 0x0

...and the dialog box is all blanks, presumably because of the missing
fonts.

  I had QEMU working a few years ago, and I don't remember running into
all these problems.  What gives?

its working ok for me - what versions of qemu/seabios/kernel?

I have:
*  sys-firmware/seabios
  Latest version available: 1.7.2.1
"binary" USE flag set for upstream compiled binaries
...

using the binary USE flag (upstream compiled)
*  app-emulation/qemu
  Latest version available: 1.4.2
...

and kernel 3.10.1

Cant help with the perms as I am running as root on dedicated hardware

Yes, I was aware the "right" way wouldn't work for what I was trying to
do. To be honest, I never tested this over a VPN, I usually use it
internally when I'm moving big files around on the server. I used the
shell for the longest time but when you are copying files that don't
easily into a wildcard pattern, it's just easier to click them in the
GUI and copy/move them. That was the whole reason I set it up. The nice
thing is that everything runs on the server on my local LAN this way,
the only thing needed is tigervnc (well, and a VPN setup) on the client.

I've been running this setup for at least seven years (probably longer,
I don't remember when I set it up originally) now, with no major issues.
I actually just ran into one recently (like two weeks ago) - the new
version of tigervnc doesn't work in the manner I've set up with the
latest stable Xorg. Instead of troubleshooting, I just masked them and
everything is running normally.

I actually used a forum thread in the Docs, Tips, and Tricks forum[1] to
get it set up initially.

The "binary" flag is an IUSE default but you're preventing the flag from

Check that KVM support is available in the kernel (CONFIG_KVM_INTEL or

older kernels are unable to load the module on an on-demand basis. I
can't remember exactly in which version they changed that. You should

VNC servers and clients vary in their capabilities rather more than they

Look in the docs for tigervnc, you probably have to configure the

Thanks for that tip on x2go - I'd struggled with freenx and eventually
gave up and freenx isn't even in the tree anymore.

I looked up x2go and rebuilt openssh on my home server as it suggested
to try it out. Other than restarting sshd, I didn't have to do any
configuration and it just *worked*. I've, like, never ever had that
happen before. Even when I set up my tigervnc with xinetd it was days of
experimenting before I got it to work. tigervnc also was hanging up X
upgrades, so now I can successfully ditch tigervnc.

x2go is so much faster it's unbelievable. I have a gigabit LAN here at
home and VNC was lagging pretty badly (to the point where I decided
against even trying to use it remotely.)

Some things to note: there's no android client, but there is one for
Windows/linux/MacOS. I haven't tried it on my Windows laptop yet, but
one of these days I'll dig it out and try it.

Makes me wonder if it would be possible to spin up a VM on demand with
x2go on and preconfigured if OP requires users not to be on the same host.

It probably is; I guess you'd need something to start the VM when a

Not an area I have looked into for years now, but Windows Remote Desktop can
be configured in “Allow Remote Assistance to this computer” mode, which will
not log out the current user. Go to Control Panel/System and Security/System
then click on Remote Settings and tick “Allow Remote Assistance to this

I've also used net-misc/freerdp, net-misc/tigervnc and x2go, but more up to

I would use VPN + an X server that can spawn sessions on demand. This
way it all stays internal on the work network.

I do something similar at work for our Windows clients, it was simple to
set up there.

I've set up my home server to act as a Windows-type terminal server
using X and tigervnc. It actually works well, but I never got into
multiuser and dealing with logon scripts and the like (you may or may
not need this to deal with user documents and the like.)

[gentoo-user] Gentoo VM with VNC

2018-04-27 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

another problem I encounter when I use Gentoo. ;-)

I have a VM (KVM) where I start X11 with qxl driver to use it via vnc. I
had the same setup before with Debian.

While with debian, VNC was fine, with gentoo the mouse get detected
wrong. I mean, I have mouse but the pointer is never in sync with the
mouse. It seems that it is virtual "scaled" on the way. That make it
difficult to find the right point to click and impossible to click on
buttons.

On the other side I use tigervnc that worked best in the past.

Currently I have no idea how to fix it.

Ah yes, X11 seems to be a new battle field for me in gentoo. While
~/.xsession was the way to have a custom startup in other distributions,
it is ignored in gentoo, used via startx or wdm. I found something about
~/.xprofile but that is also not used anywhere. At least with startx,
~/.xinit is used. Any common way for that?

Yes, x2goserver needs to be installed on the remote system. But I do
believe you need something installed on the remote system to listen for
nx/vnc requests anyway.

I switched to x2goserver/x2goclient maybe two years ago from
xvnc/tigervnc as it was getting to be a real chore to install again
xorg-x11 at the time.

It has some benefits, one of them being it spawns a new session when you
log in, like Terminal Server/Remote Desktop Services on Windows -
meaning you don't attach to an existing user that's logged on.

It also has some downsides. As in not all desktops are fully supported.
I had to switch to MATE on the server for reliability issues. KDE5 is
not supported, as an example. They do support other desktops besides
MATE, it's just the one I stuck with. It does, however, feel
back-asswards compared to KDE, as a primarily KDE-user.

not log out the current user. Go to Control Panel/System and Security/System
then click on Remote Settings and tick “Allow Remote Assistance to this
computer”.

I've also used net-misc/freerdp, net-misc/tigervnc and x2go, but more up to
date tools I have not tried yet and therefore I don't know if they are
suitable for MSWindows are:

https://kanaka.github.io/noVNC/ (uses websockets)
https://turbovnc.org/About/Introduction

This setting is turn ON but still log user out.

I found another solution, Chrome Remote Desktop" works perfectly. User on
Windows is not logged out when someone connect to it.

Any experience, how do they compare speed-wise net-misc/remmina vs.

I've tried "tigernvc" and I get an error message:
"unable to connect to socket: Connection refused (10061)"

Win 7 firewall is OFF.
Configure this Window for networking is harder than Linux.

I've tried mount Win10 dir via Samba and I get:

mount -t cifs -o username=OP1,password=op1 //10.0.0.114/temp mnt/
mount: //10.0.0.114/temp is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: cannot mount //10.0.0.114/temp read-only

The "temp" directory on Win10 is not read only.
I gave "everybody" full control

One caveat: the way X11 was intended to work in this situation is that
you run the X11 clients on the secure machine in the office, and run
the X11 server on the remote machine in the worker's home. But, in my
experience, it's been decades since remote X sessions could be used
for anything other than xterms and emacs. All the "modern" GUI
toolkits (GTK, Qt, etc.) have been designed with the assumption that
the X11 server and client are co-resident on the same machine. Even
the most trivial operations in those toolkits involve so many
round-trips between server and client that there's an intolerable
multi-second latency over a WAN connection (these days it barely works
though a 100M LAN).

It's a shame, because that used to be one of the big wins in the X11
architecture.

OTOH, there are other remote desktop options that work much better.

OK, there you're running the X server and client on the same machine,
but the server is using VNC to display remotely. That works. Just
don't try to do it the "right" way -- the way X was intended to work.

icaclient = {net-misc/tigervnc,net-misc/tightvnc,www-apps/novnc,et al.}
equivalent.

You still need a remote OS, with a desktop environment running there so that
you can connect to it.

If this is available then you can run the application you want as a
virtualised (remote) app and receive this on your local desktop, running
within a window. I remember setting up some MSWindows app on Windows 7 and
receiving this on a gentoo desktop using xfreerdp.

Bummer. FYI guys, Amazon Workspaces, Amazon Appstream, and Microsoft
Azure RemoteApp kinda work the way I've described but they all have
limitations which exclude them from working for me in this case. It
looks like I'll be admin'ing another remote Gentoo system for this.

1. This is my standard procedure for rebuilding the entire system:

emerge --jobs -1 gcc && emerge --jobs -1 binutils && emerge --jobs -1 glibc
emerge --jobs --load-average=36 --keep-going --nospinner \

Then make mrproper; cp /boot/ .config; kmake

$ cat /usr/local bin/kmake:
#!/bin/bash
mount /boot
cd /usr/src/linux
make -j12 && make modules_install && make install &&\
cp -v ./arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/EFI/Boot/bootX64.efi &&\
echo && echo "Rebuilding modules" && echo &&\
emerge --jobs --load-average=48 @module-rebuild @x11-module-rebuild && echo &&\
echo "Remaking microcode images" &&\
/usr/sbin/iucode_tool -S --write-earlyfw=/boot/early_ucode.cpio
/lib/firmware/intel-ucode/* && echo &&\
echo "Remounting /sys/firmware/efi/efivars read-write" &&\
mount -oremount,rw /sys/firmware/efi/efivars && echo &&\
echo "Don't forget to bootctl-install the new kernel!" && echo

$ cat /usr/local/bin/ejeworld
#!/bin/bash
emerge --jobs --load-average=48 --keep-going --nospinner \
--exclude="$(cat system.pkgs) linux-firmware intel-microcode" -e @world

system.pkgs contains the names of the 43 packages that are emerged by @system.

I don't know what else I can try. Help, anyone?

Hi all,

first of all I want to thank you all, who have participated in this
thread and offered their help and wisdom. :)

The result is: Now there is a cigarette sized metal case, which
includes a Beaglebone Black running Gentoo Linux, an Ultimate GPS
receiver chip on a breakout board both made by Adafruit Industries
(Lady Ada) and even the software to display position and track (if
any).

To summarize:
- Hardware: Beaglebone Black, Ultimate GPS, metal case for Beaglebone
  Black, uf.l to RMA adapter cable (which socket nicely fits into a
  hole of the metal case) and an external GPS antenna (adapter and
  antenna by Adafruit Industries). Additionally a 4600mAh LiOn accu
  pack to power the whole thing.
- Software: Gpsd, Foxtrotgps, x11vnc, xvfb, ifplugd

When I boot the Beaglbone Black via accupack it starts gpsd and the
GPS receiver begins to sync with satelites in view. If done gpsd will
collect the data. Since the output of gpsdpipe (comes with gpsd) is
json format, in the simplest case one could stream the data onto
disk/flash.

When I boot the Beaglebone at home, I plug in the LAN (which will be
recognized by ifplugs, which in turn reinitializes everything needed.

Now I fire xvfb and xvnc and start foxtrotgps.

On my PC I can easily can display the "desktop" of the Beaglebone
Black via tigervnc (vncviewer).

Two things need still to be investigated: How can I store GPSdata onto the
flash in a way, that no additional data is stored if no movement is
there. And I have to prevent, that a sector/block/organisation unit
of the flash is written more than once to prevent ware out of the
flash.

Secondly I have to figure out how to feed store data into foxtrotgps,
which normally directly connects to/with gpsd.

Foxtrottgps reads maps from OSM and store them on disk/flash and
reuses this. So this kinda "delayed offline browsing";)) :))

Thank you very much again! :)

Best regards and have a nice weekend!

OK, I had a closer look. Kernel 4.9.6-r1 is not the problem on at least two
boxen I just checked - I also tried a Macbook which keeps crashing at boot
time with this kernel, but that's for another post.

The USB problem is related to the latest updates I ran, which also coincided
with the kernel upgrade and this put me off the scent. I booted into 4.4.39
and the problem was still there on two different PCs.

I also booted into two different desktop managers, Plasma and Enlightenment.
The problem remained with both of them, whether I used KDE apps to mount the
USB stick or not.

As I mentioned, when I use pmount on the CLI I can mount the device. However,
when I used udisksctl, I got this:

$ udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdb
 AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount ===
Authentication is required to mount Crucial Gizmo! overdrive (/dev/sdb)
Authenticating as: root
Password:

What?! This comes up with plain users, and users in the wheel group. This
makes me think the problem may be polkit related. These are the packages I
emerged last weekend:
