The device works OK in another gentoo unit with the same kernel config and modules as far as usb is concerned. I did #mknod /dev/sda b 8 0 and tried to mount it there and then tried /dev/sda1 but got /dev/sda not a valid block device and /dev/sda1 does not exist respectively.
