Hi Michael, the short answer is "no", the longer is, "yes with a code change". Layer groups styles have been introduced by a community sponsored change, which spurred some negative feedback already, though it seems that a style is required for the INSPIRE validator to pass the capabilities

Hi Geoserver Users Group Is there any way to turn off styles for layer groups that are container trees? This type of layer group is not meant to display all the containing layers in one go, and we are getting dummy styles associated with our layers in the layer group, when we don't want that.
