You should be able to adjust the version used by changing the pom.xml
information in GeoServer, or by removing the dependency completely (so it
always gets the version defined and tested by GeoTools).

Not sure I understand, it is subject to the same security restrictions as
any other layer (indeed this was a security issue to ensure this was the
case some years ago).
You can set up filter chains using the URL pattern of the geoserver/gwc/ if
you wish to impose more restrictions.

It also matters how the client is processing the data. Clients that can
stream (an XML pull parser for example) can start processing immediately
and would not run into a list. Clients that load everything into memory may
become resource constrained.

That looks a bit odd; there are some vendor options to have
pointsymbolizers treated as label obstacles (so text symnolizer labels are
not drawn on top).

It is worth doing another release, as this is a problem with the build

The gs-printing module? What fails? Be more specific…
I recently (last year?) changed the PDF engine from iText to OpenPDF in
order to remain GPL. While tests pass as I do not use the module myself and
cannot comment on how well it functions.
During the code sprint last week we updated it again
can be revived, we just one one developer to step up
