also considering serving 3D assets
(collada models) , but I am not yet aware of a standard for doing this,
even Google 3D warehouse does not have an API. Deegree serves VRML format
models, VRML is frankly quite dated.

I am also starting on a CSIRO infrastructure project which will aim to
improve NetCDF support across the board in Java land, using classic ucar
netcdf and geotools.

Hi Amador,
You have a couple of options. You can create an imagemosaic from your
tile index to let geoserver mosaic on the fly or you can create an ecw
or jpeg2000 mosaic using GDAL. Both options are free, you will need to
learn some tools and it will take some time.
