Dear Clifford, which GeoServer version are you using? In code from before late december of past year, H2 was using auto server mode by default. Details here: http://www.h2database.com/html/features.html#auto_mixed_mode Starting with GeoServer 2.13.0, default has been switched to embedded mode.
