Thanks for the info, some quick and dirty testing on 2.13 and it appears
that H2 is staying in embedded mode by default, so problem solved!

In code from before late december of past year, H2 was using auto server
mode by default. Details here:

Starting with GeoServer 2.13.0, default has been switched to embedded mode.
