Hi Chris, Nice! That's a fun find. Generally, I do like the idea of using Map/Reduce or Spark to pre-generate tiles or an image pyramid. We've kicked around the idea of GWC + M/R a few times in passing. If one has Hadoop infrastructure hanging around, it might make sense to use GeoTrellis,
