Managed to catch up on IRC. commons http client is earning its keep as it is
used to keep the http connection active (something I don't think out of the box
java offers).

So the main thing here is the introduction of commons http client. I have
worked with it in the past and don't mind it; but would rather be removing
dependencies then adding them.
