I even ran autoconf on the directory and it did generate the configure
script but the script did not run. There were errors at startup itself.
I do not remeber them right now.

We all know that the usual "configure; make; make install" procedure
does not work exactly as advertised for versions 1.1.x, especially if
the user installing the package is not the same as the one building
it. Some of these problems have been mentioned by Michael J. Hammel

Minor correction to my previous post: the library that is recompiled
twice is libgimpi.a (note the "i"), not libgimp.a.
The file libgimpi.a is created in the directory (top)/libgimp/, not in
(top)/libgimp/.libs/ as the other libraries under libtool's control.

Hi
I'm currently using the experimental Film Gimp with deep image support.
It is based on Gimp 1.0.4. What would it take to add the same deep image

Oh, something I noticed from using my new procedure: The string
metrics returned by gdk_string_extents() aren't always exactly the
same as the metrics of the bounding box returned from gimp-text.
Apparently gimp-text uses something like gdk_string_extents, but not
exactly the same.
So far all I
