I know. That is why I made a point of saying it doesn't. It has some
strange facsimile of Lanczos downscaling. If you compare ImageMagick's
implementation with GIMP's, you can see a clear difference (and that
 ImageMagick gives better looking results.)

Yes, the downscaling code, in particular the new Lanczos code, still has
issues. Help with fixing that would be very much appreciated. If you
want to help, and are able to help, please show up on the gimp-developer
list.

[Gimp-user] GIMP vs Photoshop UI

FUD your conclusion is only valid for yourself and not others so your
statement is false. You can't speak for me and I don't agree with you
so... If you can provide hard data that backs this up with numbers well
that might be a different story but it would have to be global figures.

[Gimp-user] Resizing and Scaling imported/pasted pictures. . .?

2007-09-27 Thread Michael Williams
Hi All,

I'm having a problem here. I don't understand why editing an
imported/pasted picture isn't more straightforward. Why is it not as
simple as selecting the area to edit and choosing the scale tool? I keep
finding myself in some strange editing mode where I can't switch layers
and I can't scale anything.

I simply want to do the following:

1) Import picture as layer
2) Crop that import
3) Scale that crop

. . .for whatever reason it always wants to scale the background or the
layer. I just want to edit the picture I have selected.

Regards,
Michael

Hi there,

Some folks here in Brazil are makin an amazing job with this. The new
issue, #5, is coming out now.

Unfortunatelly all articles are in Brazillian Portuguese only.

You are most probably trying to work with a floating selection. That is
something you pasted but haven't positioned yet. After positioning you
have the choice of anchoring it or making it a new layer. See
http://docs.gimp.org/2.2/en/gimp-getting-unstuck.html#gimp-using-getting-unstuck-common-causes

And yes, we discussed to completely eliminate floating selections. But
they are needed for some tasks and we haven't yet found a good solution
for this. Perhaps something to address for GIMP 2.6 ...

Unfortunately, this is the Real World(tm), rejection can be
as simple as it looks too different.

However, I would be interested in hard numbers too.

Yeah? I do like it when I'm able to read something in languages
other than English. BrazPort is something I could at best blunder
my way through, but it usually carries a kind of expressiveness
that plaid old English often lacks. (-:
