[Fwd: [Gimp-user] New Gimp FAQ: Call for questions]

2002-12-20 Thread zeus
Here's some question from me.

1. How to costumize Gimp Interface in Linux?
2. Is Gimp providing gamut warning like in Photoshop?
3. How much layer, alpha channel gimp can handle?
4. Who create Gimp mascot?

I will post another questions latter...

Subject: New Gimp FAQ: Call for questions
Date: Wed, 18 Dec 2002 13:06:01 -0800 (PST)

The gimp web team has desired that the current FAQ's be updated to reflect
the current 1.2.x reality for some time. Unfortunately, it has not been
able to contact the FAQ maintainer, and the licence on the current FAQ's
do not allow for modifications. If we are not able to contact Miles soon,
we will have to do a clean room reimplementation of the FAQ's from
scratch. The results will be placed under the GNU Free Documentation
License.

We have decided to do this in two parts. First, we will issue a Call for
Questions. Please send in all questions you would like to have in the new
Gimp User FAQ to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and CC them to the lists for discussion.

Once the questions have been selected, I will arrange them and issue a
Call for Answers. Please then send me a message stating your intent to
write an answer, and CC it to the lists so that no one else takes that
question. If I do not recieve an answer within three days, I will open
that question up again.

Once all the questions are answered, I will send a final draft out for
comments.

Soon thereafter we will start with the Call for Questions for the
Developer FAQ.

I must reiterate that copying from the current GIMP FAQ's is simply not
acceptable. Such submissions will be rejected.

If English is not your first language, don't feel that you can't take
part. Any grammar mistakes will be lovingly corrected, so even if your
English is not perfect, you can still contribute significantly.

FAQ entries should be written with respect to 1.2.x, but should also
contain any significant changes in 1.3.x. If you don't use 1.3.x, it is
not neccessary to mention differences in 1.3.x -- they will be added by
the GIMP web team.

Please do not assume that all readers of this document will be Linux users
-- we want to treat users of all supported operating systems equally, to
the extent that our limited resources are capible of supporting.

There is a free program pnmtotiffcmyk in the pbm pack of
conversion programs. Save your gimp image as pnm first of course.

When I used it on a photo the colors were a bit duller.

Iam also intrested on usiong gimp as printing graphic soft. Where i can
find pbm or pnm. And how to do it.

I can not wait untill 2010 to wait gimp supporting CMYK, if GIMP want to
beat PS, the first target is supporting CMYK.

I don't think that the main idea of GIMP is to beat any other
application. And also you didn't really read the whole mail did you?

He said j-o-k-e.

But it will take time to do this things even though you might think it
is easy it is not. You have to give things like this time.

And next time read the whole mail and don't read between the lines. What
I think he tries to say is that there is no actual date for anything
right now.

Ahhaha it's my mistake, i know it was a joke, but i forget to tell you
guys, that i also didn't very serious when telling that gimp beat other
applications (f.e PS). I like GIMP a lot, in fact right now iam making a
manga (japanese comic) using gimp, since it's only use grayscale mode. I
dont have to worry about gamut or CMYK color corection.

If i want to making color illustration, i switch into W$ and run PS.
Since it's faster coloring in PS, for printing only. If making color
illustration for screen some time usin GIMP (linux).

OK, my apologize, if some one affense what i was said. But, it would be
great if GIMP support CMYK (hehehe :) ), but i can wait..and pray,
coz i can't help. I am not a apps programer. hehehe ;)

Re: [Gimp-user] Unable to seek to tile location?

2003-01-28 Thread Zeus
Jenny Drake wrote:

Hi all,
I have to problems with the gimp at the moment. I'll put the second in
another message as its a little more complicated to explain.

I'm working with large images, 14764 by 2953 pixels. Yes they do need to be
this big. The machine used for the work has 1GB of RAM and a 1.9GHz Athlon
processor. The number of undo levels in the gimp is set to three. Tile cache
size is set to 512MB. Typical projects have two or three layers at any one
time. After a while working I get the following gimp error messages after I
tell it to do something. This message repeats often many times. The message
box has an OK check.

unable to seek to tile location on disk: 22
Message repeated ** times

The command I've given gets carried out and nothing appears obviously wrong
with the image after this message comes up.
Watching the resource usage by the gimp shows that memory usage is a little
over 50% when this message starts to occur. Is this a ram problem, a hard
disk one, or something else?

I've been unable to find anything about this message in the documentation, or
from a web search. Any idea what it means? The best way of preventing it?

Try to change your temp directory to other partition with more free space,
and check in ~/.gimpx.x/folder
and find a file called gimpswap. just, delete the files. and restart gimp.

The message tells you that gimp cannot write to the swap because the
home partition it's full.

hope it's help

I mean that I want to first develope a small part of image, in layers

for me... It's a pity that I can't do it without flattening the image..

Drag the layers in small image to the big image. The layers from the small
image will be placed in the big image automatically.
You can only drag one layer at a time.

You dont have to use mask.
Change the layer mode into Multiply.

This is not GIMP related at all, GIMP can not even do this since it
doesn't know about workspaces. Workspaces are handled by the window
manager, the application doesn't see them. If you use a featureful
window manager such as for example Sawfish you can configure it to
match GIMP windows and make them appear on a certain workspace.

Yes, it's true.
If your window manager is Metacity. You might want to try Devilspie.
Devilspie let you manage apps on certain desktops.
