Ok I fixed the problem myself. I realised that I was using the Ximian debian packages
for gimp.
I replaced gimp1.2 gimp1.2-perl and libgtk-perl with the original debian ones and it
now works.
Beware of ximian.

This is the second time I have been burnt by the scripting API changing in Gimp. When
I went from
Gimp 1.0 to 1.1 I had to change all my script-fu scripts. Now I can't get my old (1.1)
perl scripts
working with Gimp 1.2. This sucks.
