Hi again. I know I am a pain in the... you know where but... There is a (very) simplified imitation of GIMP that do not use X11. Yeah, AFAIK this is a one man project that uses some GIMP implementations (libraries) and wrapps them within his own application. It looks like an interesting approach, but somehow I doubt that this is what the future of GIMP looks like. Well, if there would be some OS X users who'd try to build GTK+ without the X11 dependency (see http://developer.imendio.com/projects/gtk-macosx) and then did use this GTK+ and build GIMP, we might see some progress towards a GIMP which does not require X11 on OS X. Right now, it is rather easy to get the impression that no one does try to build GIMP - especially the current development releases or even SVN trunk - on OS X at all. I don't think that it makes any sense if a regular user is trying to build GIMP unstable to the GTK/OS X pre alpha. I'd love to provide my Mac for some experiments, but I think an experienced dev is needed to support this.
