I was just wondering if it's just me who's stupid or if it's something
else...
Is there really no way of using the colorpicker (like when pressing alt
when using the airbrush) but make it pick the physical color on the
pixel? I mean, not just the current layer, it'll just go black then
press M (for manual selection), click (select the layer), press O
(colorpicker), click.

GIMP 1.1.28 is out there, and it has shoes too!

Changes are pretty much all bug fixes. Note, for packagers especially,
that system-dependant configuration files (gimprc and friends) have
moved to $sysconfdir.

Is it easy to apply a patch for gimp? With the increased frequency of
releases, I'm begining to wonder if it would be quicker to apply the patch
instead of downloading the complete tarball?

Yes, it is easy. Make sure you have the 'patch'
How many times can you patch a gimp?
I can't get my Wacom Graphite tablet to
display a pointer on my Red Hat 6.1 linux machine.
