Main reason why it did not work for jpg is that it doesn't have its own alpha channel, therefore when you deleted selection, Gimp filled it with background color (black by default). As somebody above mentioned, you need to add alpha channel to layer with image. Then after removing selection, it will be transparent. Even better way is to add layer mask. Thank you Rich for the response. I think I fixed it...at least I hope I did lol. I had changed changed something I should not have in trying to modify the scaling of the UI. Now to try and build my skills in using GIMP! I know what you want to do but not sure how you are going about it. First general issues. Forget what you have done before in PS, Gimp works in its own way, it has a steep learning curve, it is not PS. Windows users for some reason fall back on re-installing when they think the application is broken. That is very-very rarely necessary. More usually it is the Gimp profile C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.8 that has been screwed up. Rename that to back it up in case you ever need it again. Start up Gimp and a new default profile is created. Deleting the background. A selection is normally indicated by a dotted line 'marquee' - sometimes called crawling ants. Removing a background this way requires 1. Add an alpha channel - screenshot 1 2. Cut the selection, Edit -> Cut or ctrl-x screenshot 2 Note: Not all is selected, you can add / subtract from an initial selection by changing the fuzzy tool mode. [Gimp-user] Help with Selection Tools Issue
I am a beginner to GIMP but I've done some stuff in PSE. I recently downloaded and installed GIMP. I wanted to play around a bit so I dragged in a simple jpg illustration and wanted to remove the white background. I tried to use the "magic wand" / fuzzy select tool, but instead of activating the section I clicked, the entire image began to fill with black pixels growing outward from the image itself and spreading inward from the edges. The action is locked and continues no matter what other tool I try to activate. There is no stopping it and "undo" doesn't work. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, downloaded again and everytime is the same. Can someone help me?
