Re: [Gimp-user] Business Report of GIMP

I work in a high school in Italy and I can definitely say tha GIMP is
used widely in education under Windows and Mac as it is Free (in the
meaning of like Freedom _and_ Free Beer) where people can't afford or
want to use an alternative raster-graphic program other than Photoshop.

For the sake of honesty, I think you have to check also for Krita:

https://krita.org

as its user base is growing fast, even on GIMP ...

I started using the GIMP when Tor Lillqvist's first Windows ports
appeared, and have used it on Microsoft platforms ever since. These
days I don't use any Microsoft products - they finally became completely
obsolete in every context that matters to me - but I do know several
people who use the GIMP on Windows 7 and 10. Considering the huge
Microsoft user base, I would be surprised if GIMP users on Microsoft
platforms don't outnumber users on Linux platforms by a substantial
margin - but as per messages above, that's very hard to determine.

We have a large majority of Linux users posting on the list here, but
that is most likely due to the strong connection between Linux and
technical education / computer literacy. "Geeks" use mailing lists like
this one, most others don't suspect they exist.

Anna-Barbara,

there is no company behind GIMP. And because GIMP comes preinstalled
with most Desktop Linux distributions (and because there's no Adobe
Photoshop for Linux), GIMP has its widest user base among the Linux
users. I bet there's no desktop Linux user who doesn't use GIMP from
time to time.

If you need "use statistics" you have to get the download numbers of
desktop linux distributions. For the DACH area, the most popular are
Ubuntu, Linux Mint and OpenSUSE, I think. If you need it more
international, your research would become extensive.

If for some reason only 1% of the Adobe Photoshop users would switch to
GIMP, numbers would completely change. But because the GIMP people
neither have control about distribution nor they have put a spy function
into the software which tells about its use, they can't give you numbers.

Kind regards

Jan

Hi Anna-Barbara,

there are no business reports because GIMP is not a business :)

There is no company behind GIMP, just a bunch of volunteers.

In fact, the goal is world domination... kidding :)
