I am having trouble editing tiff images captured using Nikon Coolscan V.
Gimp shows the image with a miniature of the same image added in the top
left corner. I can't make it go away. This happens both on Linux and on
Windows.
When viewing the same image using gThumb (Linux) or Windows

So I don't know if everyone already knows this but I've seen Gimp
They both look pale on my Linux driven monitor. It sounds like you are hitting a gamma issue. I -think- the Mac uses a gamma of 1.8 where as Linux and Windows is usually set to a gamma of 2.2.You might check out this site and see if it helps:
