Thanks to all who responded. It was, indeed, a subtle
library hangup which was cured by removing all old gimps,
recompiling, and reinstalling from scratch. I'm now
happily running gimp-1.1.29!

I'm trying to install Gimp 1.1.28 (perhaps i'll upgrade to 29 if I can get this to

I need to get the pango libs installed however when i do make in the pango dir,
i get the following:
